Odo and his Com Badge

pimp

Commander
Red Shirt
Hi

I am curious to know that does Odo have a real com badge or did he shape shift his own???

I ask this because when he shape shifts to an object, where does the badge go?? and then when hes back to his normal self he uses the com badge to call for help or etc. So that means the com badge is real when hes Odo but when he turns into a rock surely the badge should fall or something lol.

We know that a lot of Odo "goes" somewhere when he shapeshifts: part of his mass disappears, so that he can become as light as a drinking glass if need be.

Basically all of Odo's shapeshifting requires bending the laws of physics anyway, rather than merely having an interesting biological structure. It would be consistent to claim that Odo squeezes parts of himself to some sort of an alternate dimension in order to achieve his shapeshifting. And in that case, he would take his commbadge with him to that alternate dimension, too.

He has never shown any ability to manufacture complex functioning devices, so it's unlikely that he could "become" a commbadge. Granted, we see his badge lose shape at one corner in "The Siege", as part of the morphing process - but that could be what it looks like when something is emerging from the alternate dimension pocket, rather than what it looks like when something is being created from Founder-Goo.

I just wonder what the limits of this are. Could Odo, say, embrace and hide Kira in this alternate realm, too? That way, he could essentially squeeze Kira through a keyhole to get her past a locked door!

That's how you spell commbadge lol

where did we know about Odo moving parts of him self to alternate dimensions???

Gratuitous Fan Speculation - but it makes some sense and I like it as a solution.

To be honest i think it's rather complicated as a solution, can't you just simplify it by saying that Odo's mass changes when hes a cup of water.

Sure, it wouldn't be the first time that the in-universe laws of physics were bent or broken. But what fun is there in an easy solution?

I think his badge was a seperate thing from him, his comm badge was taken from him in "Invasive Procedures" once he was seen again at the end of the episode he didn't have it. Also it has been stated that when any part of him is removed from the whole of his body it reverts to a liquid state, since the character who removed it didn't take it, then have goo on her hands, it would have to be an independent unit.

The theory of him just taking it along with him when he shapeshifts is a plausible one, since when he turns into an animal or object he does not have to retain the internal shape of it, only its exterior, he'd have plenty of room to keep it.

Actually it's not fan speculation if you accept the novels in your personal canon. That's similar to the description given to Odo's abilities in DS9: Millennium.

In other words in regards to all the answers in this thread: there is no way to explain this in a way that makes any sort of reasonable sense, so best not to even think about it.

Yeah but i want to think about it ;)

That's like the Doc of Voyager with his combadge. They should have had the combadge fall off Odo everytime he shape shifted and it should have fallen to the ground every time the Doc on Voyager was deactivated (or transfered to the holodeck).

The Doctor'sCommbadge was part of his program, part of his program obviously included a communications subroutine allowing him to contact others.

That was nothing. There was that episode when Odo met that other shape shifter that could turn into pretty much anything. He turned into a cloud and I think he even moved at warp speed when he first arrived.

I remember being at a convention when one of the production people - I don't remember which one - asked this same question. His answer was that it was a real combadge, but it would just stay floating in Odo when he was morphing into something else.
I do like the idea of it falling off whenever he did morph, but that may have proven too complicated, expensive, or creative.

I like to think it floats around in him somewhere when he shapeshifts.
although that is a bit of a problem when he is a glass of water or some kind of mist or energy cloud.

he absorbs it inside of him.

thats my best guess, though it wouldnt work in that episode where they are training for a changling being on the station and he "kills" Bashir, and says something about being able to not only become an object but a surface (after he changes from a super thing glass covering on a pannal or terminal or somethign) I assume he has a com badge then

It's possible that the commbadge was between Odo and the Surface. The Comm Badge is not that thick and presumably Odo covering the surface would add a layer or two.

The episode that I think is the most troubling for the concept is when Odo regains his shapeshifting ability. He walks out of the Infirmary, turns into a bird, leaving his uniform behind, then shapeshifts back into himself, uniform, Commbadge and all.
