"Ode To Spot" mentioned in a court case

Weird! :0
I thought Data's poem was fun for what it was even if it was objectively a rubbish poem, but I'm biased because I love Data. Either way, I don't think Data's poetry has any place in this court case because Data is:
A) fictional, and
B) sentient. He is a sentient AI, and real life AI hasn't reached that level, and honestly, I don't believe it ever will. So bringing him up in a court case seems pretty pointless to me.

I think it's because it's a pop culture reference people might be familiar with as an example of this situation. When you're trying a potentially precedent-setting case about technology's ability to think, there aren't many real world examples, if any.

That was indeed speculation the judge cited as a possible future situation. She used it to fortify her decision to deny the current claim.

Just shows you, people still say ‘it’s like that Star Trek episode where…’.

In this case, the judge must have been mulling this one over until they came to ‘it’s like that Star Trek episode where Data wrote a poem’.

I find it weird to cite Data's poem for that purpose.

Obviously, it was written by a human in actuality (AI couldn't remotely write something like that back in 1992), and also, it was meant to be technically 'clever' but still 'soulless'.

Honestly, and AI today could do a better job than "An Ode to Spot".
Gemini came up with this

O Spot, enigma wrapped in fur so white,
A shadow dancing in the fading light.
With patches dark, like ink upon the snow,
A feline artist, where'er you go.

Your emerald eyes, a knowing, ancient gleam,
Reflecting worlds, a silent, mystic dream.
A velvet paw, that treads with silent grace,
A hunter's instinct, etched upon your face.

The gentle purr, a rumbling, soft delight,
A comfort shared, throughout the day and night.
You curl and stretch, a fluid, graceful line,
A furry sculptor, in your own design.

Upon the sill, you watch the world unfold,
The birds that flutter, stories to be told.
A whiskered sage, with wisdom deep and vast,
A silent guardian, memories that last.

Oh, Spot, dear friend, a creature of the night,
A star that twinkles, with a gentle light.
We cherish moments, shared beneath your gaze,
And sing your praises, through our loving days.

ChatGPT's attempt

Oh Spot, thou art a creature rare,
With midnight coat and gaze so fair,
In moonlit grace, you prowl the night,
A whisper in the silver light.

Your whiskers twitch, your tail held high,
A silent hunter, swift and sly,
The world, your kingdom, wide and vast,
With you, all moments seem to last.

A patch of sun, a cozy chair,
Your kingdom, Spot, you do declare.
You curl up close, a ball of purrs,
The world's chaos, your peace blurs.

You stride with pride, no fear, no doubt,
A monarch's soul, without a shout.
Your eyes, like jewels, gleam in the shade,
A silent story softly laid.

Oh Spot, in every quiet leap,
You stir the hearts of those you keep.
In every stretch, in every yawn,
You paint the world from dusk to dawn.

A noble cat, so sleek and true,
With every step, the world anew.
So here’s to you, dear feline friend,
May your reign of love never end.

That is grossly, frighteningly beautiful. I am legit concerned that AI came up with all that by itself. I fear for the future of the arts if all you have to do is say, "hey chatgpt, write me a poem about a cat" and then it spits out that gorgeous nonsense.

It might look good at first glance, but as you keep reading and looking at the word choice, you realize it's not as good as you think."A shadow dancing in the fading light"? "A monarch's soul, without a shout"? Cliched and nonsensical. AI is good at first impressions, but doesn't survive closer scrutiny.

Ah, but AI can't stroke its' fur.

Put in a robot body, it probably could. A cat might very much enjoy a robot minder, as long as it was equipped with a soft heating pad on its lap. Said AI would have infinite patience, wouldn't have to stand up to go to the bathroom, and wouldn't shoo the kitty away if its kneading got a little too intense.

AI is good at first impressions, but doesn't survive closer scrutiny.

In 2015, AI poems weren't really a thing at all.
By 2025, they're imperfect, but there's a picture in them.
What will they be like in 2035?
