Odd things that bug?

Does anyone else have quirky things that annoy you? I hate when I see years written as 2009 AD as opposed to AD 2009. I also hate that the words "less" and "fewer" have lost their distinctions in advertisements and in most casual language. Oh and when people call chimpanzees "monkeys."

A consultant I had to work with once for a project ended every second sentence with "right" at the end of it, with an Aussie style upwards inflection making it sound like a question. I had to work with him for an entire week, and he wasn't Australian.

I had a client once that was a CEO. When speaking to his leadership team he finished every other sentence with "and stuff" or "on that side of it," or most of the time "and stuff on that side of it."

The man is a very saavy businessman and treats his people very well and has become wealthy as a result, but that drove me batty.

Would of. As in "I would of said no." I could imagine myself punching someone every time I hear that.

As a wrestler I hate the word 'fake'. It just seems to derogatory. No one talks about the fake doctors on ER.

Other little things include people dropping by unannounced. Especially when they expect to stay for a coffee or a chat. Or in a few cases that really infuriated me - stay the night. My photographer was the exception to the rule as he used to drop things off for me and I'd invite him in for tea.

The worst was a girl I'd been on a couple of dates with. She showed up at my door and came out with "Well it's late, I may as well stay over." Some would think 'yay! sex!' It just really annoyed me that she'd invite herself into my home that way, so I suggested she run for the bus and closed the door.

People who email me. Yes, the email address is on the site. Yes, I do say you should contact us. But I also say you should contact us once you've read all the information, schedule and very, very brief FAQ page with every possible thing you can ask me answered. So don't email me asking when the classes are. It tells you on the same page you found my address on. Stop it.

More onto the odd subject - people who phone me. I don't have a phone so I can talk to people.

Store Clerks who think their employment is a position of power. That's odd because they don't realize a customer might have more spending money in their pocket then the clerk received in pay the last month.

"D'ya know what I'm sayin?" or variants thereof. Grr. No, I don't know what you're saying, why don't you tell me in plain English?

It aggravates me when I am paying for my groceries with cash and the cashier very carefully holds the bills until the receipt prints handing over the bills & recepit together. I prefer to have the bills, so I can put them away and thenin put the receipt somewhere else rather than my wallet with the rest of my money.

People who think that just because they have a higher net worth, they therefore have power in every situation.

I'm confused. Do you mean you dislike it when people mistakenly write "would of" instead of "would've" or that you dislike it when people speak the contraction "would've" instead of saying "would have?"

As for me, not many little things bug me, but I suppose the oddest of the small bunch would be people leaving toilet lids up. Toilets have a lid for a reason. When the toilet flushes, it can spay particles up to 6 feet away. The lid should be closed before the toilet is flushed, not doing so is just plain disgusting. I guess most people don't seem to see it that way, though.

Along those lines, when they give you the receipt and your change in notes at the bottom, and the coins on top. I'm sure it is so you can see you haven't been short-changed, but the coins tend to slide off the notes, on to the ground. When you have one hand full, It'd be much easier to get the coins at the bottom.

Oh, and I can't stand people in malls etc dawdling along in front of you. Main reason why I avoid shopping centres whenever possible, everyone seems to stoop to the lowest common denominator when in or around them, I can feel my IQ dropping every time I go near one.

My dad thinks I'm overreacting on this one, but I really hate multipurpose sports stadiums.

You know what I mean; the 'cookie cutters' built in the 60's and 70's, meant for both baseball and football, but which of course were no damn good for either sport since the shapes of the fields are so different (the cookie cutters had movable sections to shift from baseball to football and back, but this only went so far). They were ugly, inefficient, soulless, concrete monstrosities. Thankfully, most of them are gone now.

People driving the wrong way in a parking lot.

Also, people who are proud of their ignorance.

Yes, yes, oh God, yes to both of those! To the parking lot, I'd add people who back right out of a spot without looking.

I'd also add (I've got a lot actually, and the list grows the older I get):
-- people who use the word "proactive."
-- people who use the word "doable."
-- people who are fond of saying, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it," especially when they think they're being sage.
-- not enough check-out lines open in the grocery store (that can get me going on a good rant).

There's more, but I'm in a good mood today, so I'll stop.

Not so much writing, but saying it aloud and thinking it is the correct phrase. The most annoying of late was someone correcting my grammer starting with the sentence "I would of said it this way..."
