Odd question: does emminent domain exist in the Federation?

We've never heard, one way or the other, but I would guess that it does.

Private ownership of land still exists, that much we do know. And as long as there's that, there will be instances where the government might need the land (if they needed to build a hospital or something like that), and the Federation would be no exception.

So I think you would be safe in using eminent domain in a story. Just make sure that whatever you're having built (to necessitate the taking of the land) isn't something that would have been made obsolete by advances in technology. For instance, I doubt anyone's building roads in Trek's future. ;)

Need to know for a story. Thanks in advance.

I don't really see why it would. Presumably, with higher education, there's a lower population and lower population growth, so population density is probably low enough that they can avoid having to build on people's property. A warp-capable society would by definition have nigh-infinite resources, so presumably they wouldn't need to even tax people, let alone take their houses.

It isn't land, but the precedent crossed my mind about ED with "Journey's End," since it involved the Federation moving a colony without their permission.

I hope NOT. I really hope not.

ED was what, Judge Souter, yes?

Judge Souter gave Connecticut folk's homes & land to some lofty snooty company which has more money than God via his ED ruling yes:confused:

What a piece of feces:scream::mad:

What an :evil: turd that Judge is.

:devil:-Man you could call ED favoring Supreme Court Judge Souter.

Funny you should ask about ED Rat Boy.

ED featured heavily in 1 of my rejected SNW 1O story submissions. ED's heavily featured co-star in that tale was the :evil: of Microsoft style monopolies.

Intriguing thread:vulcan:

I'm sorry to say this, but as long as there is SOME sort of GOV'MENT there will always be EMINENT DOMAIN! especialy for that ''Greater good'' CRAP!.

I decided to cheat: I'm putting the whole issue off until later in the story, which at this rate won't happen until some time in June.
