OK, thanks! I recognize the name but don't think I have ever seen a whole episode. I will put that on my list.

Same here I've watch Morse and Endeavor but Lewis never grabbed me.
Have you seen Taggart? and I know it's not British but Miss Fishers murder mystery's are fun too watch.
Seen them all! An excellent show.
Only seen one of Miss Fisher and it didn't grab me. I might give it another look. Don't think I have ever seen Taggart; will have to look it up.
One that I haven't seen mentioned is Rumpole of the Bailey staring Leo Mckern. I remember watching that on PBS back in the day.
I remember bits and pieces of it; it was so long ago.

Midsomer Murders (the switch of the main character threw me for a bit but I learned to like both Inspectors)

Lewis (you might give this another go, it takes a while to really get going. I never liked the first sergeant much, but the later ones were good)
Jack Taylor (technically not British as it's set in Galway, Ireland)
Hamish Macbeth (set in Scotland, the main character is a village constable, so not many murders to solve)
Inspector George Gently
I remember enjoying Taggart, but it's been such a long time that I don't know if I still would.
Ditto Bergerac. It's very 80s. Ditto Lovejoy.

Please, please, please if it's possible for you to source the series Public Eye do so (available in the UK through Network DVD). It's pretty obscure but it is TV perfection. Lots of the early 60's episodes have been wiped but all the episodes from the crucial Brighton series onwards are available. It is a work of absolute genius and the central performance by Alfred Burke as Frank Marker will enrich your life. Seriously, I know it sounds like I'm overegging the pudding but I'm really not, it's that good.
I like how in the detective dramas set in London, Parking is never an issue.

Crime Traveller, Randall and Hopkirk Deceased (both the original and the Vic and Bob remake) if you want your detectives with a sci-fi/fantasy twist.
After seeing season 6 of Death in Paradise, I'm kinda done with it. It was always simple fun -- not that great but amusing. Now it's just ...oy.

Most of the British ones I watch are really old now. I still like Rosemary and Thyme and although it's a bit dreary Ann Cleeves 'Vera' and 'Shetland' grows on you. I believe a new series of 'Shetland' is in the works.
A Touch of Frost is as much fun watching him eat English breakfast food as it is the crime!
