Obscure comic book characters in Marvel and DC animated series?

^More than "informed," I'd say. They're essentially the same character except that this Artemis Crock's mother is named Paula Nguyen rather than Paula Brooks. But YJ's Paula Nguyen was originally a villainess called Huntress, and she and Sportsmaster had a daughter named Artemis Crock, who originally went by Artemis but eventually adopted the persona of Tigress.

what made Batman The Brave and The Bold and Super Hero Squad Show so great was they could be enjoyed by kids and adults. i loved all the obscure character references. i never ever expected Kamandi to make an appearance...and he made several. i know a friend of mine was like, what the heck is Haunted Tank? for long time fans its rewarding. and if you don't know who Kamandi or Werewolf By Night are...well maybe you'll be curious enough to find out.

He made several? I only know of the one episode, about (Grodd?)- the intelligent gorilla. What other episodes was he in?
well, he appears in several of the opening teasers. the ep with Captain Marvel. one with The Joker. and the one with Deadman and Gentleman Ghost i think.

I think my favorite recent case of using an obscure comics character was Young Justice taking Sportsmaster, a D-List Golden Age joke villain and turning him into a genuinely sinister, potent foe who held his own against much more powerful heroes and villains.
How well known were Artemis & Miss Martian before YJ? That was the first place I ever heard of the characters.

Ok, good points. :alienblush: Kaldur's Aqualad, too. And several other characters, really.

I believe Kaldur was created for the show, and was incorporated into the comics while it was in production, but before it aired.

Artemis didn't exactly exist before YJ, in the comics she was called "Arrowette".
The original Artemis was an enemy of Infinity Inc and the daughter of the Sportsmaster and the Huntress/Tigress. She later changed her codename to Tigress.

That version of Artemis informed the YJ version.

Weisman had credits as assistant editor on the Infinity Inc book during his brief tenure at DC. I think the character is definitely based on the main DCU one. I think some of his idea in regards to crafting fictional universes were definitely influenced by Roy Thomas during that time.

Miss Martian was fairly well known amongst DC readers since she was one of the few characters created by Johns on his run of Teen Titans. Plus she was a White Martian.

That's right. Comics can be produced a lot faster than animation, so they can jump the gun that way. The same thing happened with Renee Montoya, who was created for B:TAS but showed up in the comics first.

All B&B episodes? I'll have to research this...
