I've been rewatching season 2 with my girlfriend and it occured to me that Obrien mentions things about his family back on earth that was never picked up on. He mentioned that his mother died and that his father remarried and that his father wanted him to become a musician but he joined starfleet instead. He also mentioned having a brother. I could have sworn during the "Homefront" "Paradise Lost" episodes that Obrien tells Sisko to check in on his parents (plural)implying that both his parents were alive. Unless he somehow began thinking of his stepmother as a parent(which I doubt from the way he mentioned her), it would seem that maybe they forgot some of these minor details that Obrien mentioned about his family. It's a shame they never followed up on this topic because it could have been a good b-story to meet Obrien's father and his stepmother or his brother.
I suppose we also never got to meet Sisko's sister even though they referred to her in a few episodes and come to think of it, before we met Joseph Sisko, it was sort of implied that Sisko's father had passed when Sisko mentioned his father in the past tense during his conversation with Dukat.
