Spoilers 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' series [Spoiler Discussion]

They blew up Alderaan on the spot nine years down the road. There might not have been much of an imperial presence on the planet, or they would have given them time to evacuate...or they really didn't give a shit.

I like how at the end of Rogue 1 Vader is taking entire ships on his own, and five minutes later in ANH he's like "I'm knackered, you stormtroopers take this one."
Yeah, that part stands out to me quite painfully. The only thing that would make it better is if we saw right before his dramatic entrance was Vader leaning against a bulkhead breathing deeply and psyching himself up to go on.

I liked how the app treated all the prequel stuff at the beginning as a "recap" that you could skip. As if a trilogy from 17 years ago was just last week's episode.

Overall I liked the first two episodes; the second one a little more so. Though I did find Third Sister's acrobatic antics a little over the top. And stabbing the Grand Inquisitor obviously wasn't fatal since he's in Rebels. But what's going to happen to Third Sister? If she doesn't manage to curry Vader's favor, she'll probably be executed for insubordination. Also I thought the cutesy Disney Princess treatment of Leia was a little too ...Disney-ish.

This whole argument perfectly illustrates why strict and literal adherence to 'canon' is silly and futile. Because here's the thing: Vader jumbling up events is perfectly explainable in-universe. And not because of the Force, or darkside corruption or any of that, but because that's just how humans work.

You don't jumble up events of that significance. If the last time you saw your old college professor was when he beat you within an inch of your life with a lead pipe and then you saw him twenty years later, you wouldn't "forget" or "jumble up" another meeting that happened in the interim.

There's absolutely zero inconsistency here. In Rogue One, Vader was in a hurry. There was major urgency. He took matters into his own hands because time was crucial and he was trying to prevent an escape.

In ANH, the ship has been captured. Escape is impossible. They're not going anywhere. There's no rush, no urgency. Vader doesn't need to bother. It's literally why they have stormtroopers in the first place, to be cannon fodder and do the dirty work.

Rewatching that scene and I felt no urgency either in Vader. Just bloodlust. Which is noticeably absent in ANH. Yeah, it stands out. People can rationalize it away all they want but it doesn't work for me.

You're misunderstanding of the scene doesn't change the facts. Vader may have gone over the top, but he was there on a mission, he wasn't just killing randos to get his jollies. He was there with an explicit objective, to stop the plans from escaping. Period. There was major urgency to that task which was entirely absent once the ship had literally been brought aboard the star destroyer. Vader didn't need to attack anyone.

No rationalizations, just facts. Whether it "works for you" personally doesn't change the intent of either scene. You're free to feel however you want, but that doesn't make the movies wrong.

Watched episode 2 and while it wasn’t as strong as the debut it was still pretty good.

I wonder what the Hell Riva has against Obi Wan? It seems like a personal vendetta as opposed to her just wanting to suck up to Vader? Just a thought.

The Obi Wan/Leia interactions were really good. She really does look like a child Carrie Fisher and she’s full of sass and smart without being annoying.

Vader has a bacta tank too it seems. Everyone has one these days. I thought he lived in that giant black mechanical egg from the movies, but I guess not yet.

It’s a really nice show. Really impressive so far and looking forward to the next one tomorrow.

It’s a good few weeks for TV I think. Strange New Worlds running on Wednesdays alongside Obi Wan, The Boys Season 3 kicks off on Friday and next week Ms. Marvel!

Did I say it was wrong?

Thanks for the "just the facts" speech. It is however also a movie that is to connect in to another movie. The incongruence, no matter the point, is jarring, and removes a level of enjoyment for me. Which, if I recall correctly, is the point of a film is to generate enjoyment and not analysis of how two works connect together. "Intent of a scene" is great if it is communicated well. It is not for me. But, I have no doubt you will have a response on this analysis as well.

I will continue to take notes for your lecture on film facts

ETA: Ok, I will respond with less snarkiness. Personally, I get what Rogue One was trying to communicate. I just don't think it did it very well. I think there is a significant tonal shift from one film to the other and the explanations you give don't account for the dissonance well enough when watching the two films. Intent is great and all, but if the message gets muddled then I'm going to say it got muddled.

Don’t forget Orville. That also starts this week. As well as a new South Park special.

I watch South Park intermittently (though I do like it). However, a huge thank you for the heads up on The Orville. I had no idea that was back as well!

So many shows. So little time.

I imagine she was one of the younglings that escaped at the beginning of the first episode. May have a grudge over it being his apprentice that essentially destroyed the Jedi.

Aye. I backtracked through the thread a little and it seems there’s a black girl in darker robes in the Order 66 scene from E01. Makes sense.

I'm assuming it's this and then, after O66, she had a rough few years living a hardscrabble life on the streets (Hence the lines about how she "came from the gutter.")

And she feels personally betrayed by the Jedi for what she suffered. Note her lines to the Tatooine crowd: "The Jedi abandoned you!" Feels like she's speaking from personal experience there.

The EP IV duel we should have got, although I don't think Sir Alec would have been up to the task back in the day.

No, that was not the point of Star Wars' duel at all. Obi-Wan and Vader are at different points of their lives, and wild, action-film swinging would have nothing to do with their history (clearly a component of this duel) or Obi-Wan's decision to keep Vader at bay until Luke and the others escaped. That, and overuse of those ROTS cues was jarring. Its not the end-all representation of the characters or Jedi/Sith conflicts in general, not to mention the wide angles of the new footage looked like the set-up of a video game fight.

Perhaps that's the problem--someone had a video game mentality mixed with the often heartless, post-PT depiction of Jedi/Sith conflicts when creating this

Really? In TESB, his invasion of Echo base in the hope of capturing Luke was of far greater urgency (to him--and the galaxy) than obtaining the Death Star plans, yet he still relied on troopers in the invasion, rather than taking matters into his own hands.

So, from Star Wars to TESB, there's consistency in how Vader operates when storming anything Rebel-related. The only outlier--and a glaring one at that--was the needless lightsaber porn in Rogue One.

You should go ask your nearest district attorney about that.
