NYPD = Epic technological FAIL

Yeah that's the government for you.

$1 Million dollars can buy you a crap load of computers too. It's not like it's hard to find them for $500 on a normal basis.

Yeah, but the NYPD has some very high tech stuff including a helicopter with state of the art cameras, scanners and surveillance equipment. They are proposing even more advanced stuff (the fact that many of the proposals floated would seriously endanger or completely eliminate privacy is another issue though).

If you notice from the picture, the typewriter is sitting between a bunch of laptops. So I'm guessing they already have the computer network and infrastructure to use, but they still have to fill out these paper forms, which they may still have boxes and boxes of from years ago.

All it takes is one strategically placed high-atmospheric EMP detonation to disable the entire eastern seaboard.... gotta be prepared. :bolian:

And how much is some company going to charge the NYPD to make forms they can fill out online and print? Even at a high tech company I worked for they used the occasional typewriter to fill out forms and things for which there was no template for a word processor.

I have three or four old computers in my parents' basement. They're not pretty, or fast, but they'll get on the internet or at the very least work as word-processors after some minor work. I'm sure there's hundreds, nay, thousands of old computers out there that could be used. But frickin' typewriters? Really?

Hell, I was waiting to get my car fixed at the dealer the other day and they had a computer in the waiting room running Windows freakin '98!

Oh, man, I can get a whole basement full of Commodore 64s. I'm calling up the NYPD and making a $1 million deal!

But the company which makes the ink-ribbons runs on computers now, so they're still doomed!
As someone famous once said, if the third world war will be fought with computers and weapons of mass destruction, the fourth world war will be fought with stones and spears.

The typewriter, it's the future! I've tasted it! :bolian:

A typewrite would also be of use if they have forms that produce carbon copies.

Yeah I know that you could simply press Ctrl-P and choose to make 3 copies but there could be legal reasons for it.

It doesn't take a technical wizard to create a Template in Word and Dot-Matrix printers are still available for people who need to use triplicate forms. Car dealers use them all the time.
