NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook Sci-F

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

It's a horrible list. Buffy? WTF??? Willow? WTF^2?????

And where the fuck is Aeryn Sun?

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

Janeway is #16.

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

Eye candy/glorified operator and an Insaneway? Really? :wtf:

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

Insaneway owns souls. Of course she's on the list.

I don't think anyone in the known universe knows what Farscape is. Also, what did Aeryn Sun do?

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

WTF Marina did not even speak.
She just used to sit there and get kidnapped and needed a man to come and rescue her each week:wtf:

Buffy and Willow definitely belong on the list. Buffy (the series) was a game-changer in many ways, and B&W were the most recognizable of its characters to the general public.

Now, Halle Berry's Catwoman? There's a WTF.

Never having seen One Tree Hill, I can't comment on that. However, Buffy the show is definitely deserving of a place on any SF/F top-10 list. It's high-quality stuff.

Which I consider crap, and I actually did watch it back in the day, because I've found it to be a nice way to kill time (God I miss high school)...
BTW, before you Buffy fans crucify me, this is all just strictly IMO.

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

Eh. Just saying, whether you liked it or not, there's no denying it's had a profound impact on television since then.

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

If anything, it strains credibility to count Buffy the Vampire Slayer as "sci-fi."

EDIT: I see now the list encompasses Sci-Fi and Fantasy.

But WTF is Halle Barry's Storm doing on this list? What did she do that was so great?

And how the hell did Rose from Dr.Who get in front of Uhura? :wtf:
Starbuck ahead of Sarah Connor?

That doesn't matter. What Buffy did do is get a more mainstream teenage and young adult television audience interested in fantasy, as well as being one of the first long-running mainstream fantasy/sci-fi show to have strong female leads. As well, it's also one of the first fantasy sci-fi shows ever to approach its material in a distinctly smart-ass post-modern way, and it's headed by females. Opinions of quality aside, Buffy made strides, along with helping to make the vampire trend so popular now.

So Buffy = One Tree Hill? No. Buffy = 21st Century Xena/Female Blade? Probably. And I say that as someone who's never watched a full Buffy episode in his life.

(Slightly OT: I have mixed feelings about calling it sci-fi, but for the sake of this argument, I'll go along with the list).

As for the list, I've got problems with Storm and Megan Fox being over Number Six, Xena, and Sydney Bristow (the latter because I think she fits perfectly with the logic I applied to Buffy, only with spies rather than vampires). Oh, and Pris > Storm any day.

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

With regards to the sci-fi versus fantasy thing, I feel that something like Buffy, while technically fantasy, has a lot more in common with science fiction than it does with things like Lord of the Rings.

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

In order for buffylike shows to pretend to be sci-fi like they would have to concisously move to a materialistic viewpoint to the subject matter.

In Trek many stories involve the unexplainable, but the characters atleast try understand the nature of the phenomena. In both Silence Has Lease and the Immunity Syndrome the Enterprise attempts to scan, probe or otherwise measure the unknown.

Instead of demonlore use exo or xenobiology.
Instead of good/evil sinner/saint use behavioralism.

Supernaturalism is not a valid concept.

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

That's rather missing my point. Yes, Buffy uses magicbabble rather than technobabble and demons rather than aliens, but the types of stories they tell using those mechanisms is similar: Throw something strange at the characters and see how they deal with it. That's the fundamental similarity; and, I would say, the most interesting aspect of science fiction in general.

So maybe Buffy temporarily develops telepathy because she got pricked by a demon rather than because Ambassador Troi had the flu. The cause is different, but the essential story told as a result is along the same lines.

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

It looks like the list was done by kids that only watched FOX and SciFi Channel the last five years.

If they are going to make a SciFi + Fantasy I wish they would say SciFi and Fantasy. Vampires and Willow do not fall under SciFi. They might as well include Judi Dench from the Bond movies.

Re: NYOTA UHURA & KATHRYN JANEWAY included in the 25 women who shook S

I'm glad Ivanovich from B5 got a nod but think DeLynn's omission shortsighted. Most of them do seem geared toward a pretty young audience.

Janeway's only 16? Uhura isn't 1 or 2?
