If and when they start putting out TREK books based on JJ's vision of Trek, which books do you think will sell more. I know its a hard thing to predict. But, for the sake of argument, lets say one of our gifted authors on this site wrote two books; a very good one about Spock from the original timeline. And one about Spock from the new JJ timeline. Both books are equally good, and the same length. Both come out the same day even. Which book, in a year's time, would sell the most?

Would oldSpock book win because it has a built in fanbase already.

Or would nuSPOCK book win because some old fans would certainly buy it, and so might an influx of new fans who would never have bought a book based on oldTREK..

What do think...

Rob

I don't think it matters as the two books wouldn't be in competition with each other. All that matters is that they both do well enough to go into a 2nd printing at which point they will have exceeded expectations and both be considered a success.

I don't understand. I like both characters. Why do I have to choose? You know, I don't think I do.

In what way was my post negative, Robert? I wouldn't call most of them negative, unless it's negative to say "We are not going to be required to choose, so why pretend that we are?"

^ You're not being asked to choose in that way. The thread isn't about which one you'd personally prefer, it's about which one you think would sell best. It's an entirely hypothetical scenario, yes, but I don't see why it's not worth discussion.

Well, I do think it's a useless topic of conversation.

1) nuTrek books have already been announced, so if he's arguing that nuTrek books should be published, reality has already beaten him to the punch.
2) Even disregarding nuTrek, there would have to be *huge* variation between sales numbers within the different Trek series we already have, and that hasn't stopped them publishing all of them. It's like making a poll for TNG-R outselling DS9-R. Sure, probably so, but it doesn't affect anything, so who cares?
3) Regardless of our suppositions, they don't release sales numbers, so we'll never have a definitive answer.

And most importantly:

4) This is the guy who has made a huge grandstanding deal out of saying that they should cancel everything and just publish nuTrek (http://trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=90234), and since we all know what's coming, why play?

Just to add to Thrawn's comments:

Gorkon, S.C.E., SNW and Stargazer say "Hi." :vulcan:

Fair enough, but even after all of those we still had Vanguard, Titan, and Myriad Universes introduced. It's abundantly clear that they're interested in exploring book-only series, meaning the TV show-based books are clearly still doing fine, meaning there's no way in HELL it's all getting canceled for nuTrek only.

And besides, I feel like at least some of those ended for more complicated reasons than just sales numbers. Gorkon ended up getting folded into Destiny and ASD for plot reasons, making continuing the series kind of silly. Original eBooks in general were killed, but that was a whole separate type of distribution. It wasn't like they kept eBooks and just cancelled CoE; it was the eBooks that weren't profitable, not what was published on them. SNW never made any money. I don't know about Stargazer, but it looks like that'd really be the only example that would wholly support your point.

And they redesigned the series way before Destiny because it sold like gangbusters, right?

No idea; you'll have to ask KRAD. And then he won't tell you.

Hence this whole conversation being pointless.

And either way, you think a book with Leonard Nimoy's Spock on the cover is going to be a sales problem?

IIRC He already has.

Huh? What has that to do with the point I was making: That your statement that Pocket never has stopped a series because of sales is total bullshit?

But to answer your question: No, I don't think so. And since I found the novelization of the movie (my only exposure to nuTrek so far) to be lacking, I sure hope it never will become a problem.

^ Then I apologize for being unclear. What I meant was that Pocket has never only produced the single most profitable series. Pocket has always published a variety of series, many of which make more money than others.
