Now that four books have been announced as planned for next year set in Nutrek time I'm extremely curious..

Will these books have a different flavor than the TOS books currently being published? I'm wondering if they will feel like NuTrek or if they will be indistinguishable from Primetrek TOS novels published recently. I'm not talking about facts such as there being no Vulcan.

I'm sure the Abramsverse novels will be very recognizable as that. I doubt they could possibly be in any way interpreted or shoehorned into the prime universe continuity, and that's not even counting major ST XI events like the destruction of Vulcan.

Well, if they're written by the same folks, and unconstrained by any editorial edicts I don't really see NuTrek lit being tonally any different than the old stuff, except in regards to a few minor details like Vulcan being gone, Uhura/Spock etc.

And of course the fact that everyone is well...young.

I would love to be proven wrong though.

Well, I think the authors of NuTrek lit would and should make their stories more action-oriented with the characters being hip (did i just say that?) and nu, following the way the movie was made. I think good authors have the ability to mix different styles or stick to a certain writing style even if that style isn't their preferred one. So yes, I think there will be a definite difference in the way nuTrek will 'feel' to the reader as compared to TOS.

The way I see it is, there'd be no point in doing these books if they were indistinguishable from standard TOS books. If both versions of 23rd-century Trek are going to coexist on bookshelves, it only makes sense to differentiate them as much as possible.

Also, the movie has brought in a whole new audience for Star Trek, an audience that has little or no prior familiarity with ST but came to the film because of their interest in J.J. Abrams or Zachary Quinto or Zoe Saldana or whoever and decided they liked what they saw. If we want to get those new movie fans interested in the books, then the books need to emulate the style, tone, and content of the movie.

I haven't talked much about the Abramsverse books with any of the other authors doing them, but I can say that Seek a Newer World is very, very much a continuation of the reality established in the film, and that there's no way it could possibly be mistaken for a Prime-universe TOS adventure. And yes, it is a more action-oriented story, and I've tried to emulate the film's attitude and style of dialogue.

And "unconstrained by editorial edicts," Caliburn24? Hardly. These books have to be approved like any others, and are actually under significantly tighter restraints than most modern Trek Lit, because they're tie-ins to an active and very popular segment of the franchise. We don't have the luxury to take the books in any direction we want, because we're trying to minimize the risk of being contradicted by the next movie.

Exactly. I'm working very hard to capture the feel of the movie. If this book ends up reading like an old-fashioned TOS novel, I'll have failed in my mission.

^ Precisely. I am hoping that new fans brought in by Abrams' movie translates into a new legion of readers and some of those people migrate to some of the other books. To get them interested though, the new books will have to mirror the characters we saw on the screen. I will have no problem distinguishing between the two and look forward to journeying down both paths. I just want good stories to escape into.

Have you got any dos or don´ts from Orci and Kurtzman regarding the plots?

The approval process is going through CBS's licensing department as usual. I just get their comments via my editor; I don't know what might be going on at a higher level. It's exceedingly rare for the makers of a TV or film franchise to communicate directly with the authors doing tie-in novels.

^ What he said.

Also, just to echo the comments by Christopher and Greg, I made an effort while writing More Beautiful Than Death to capture the feel, "voice," and pacing of the new film. It's heavy on action and light on technobabble, and the interaction between the characters should feel different from a classic TOS novel.

I've actually compared notes with my editor and with John Van Citters (the licensing executive at CBS Television) about what I consider to be the most important differences in the characters and tone. I hope my take on nuTrek works for everyone who gives my book a chance. :D

Thank you people, I am VERY EXCITED to read that that there is a deliberate move to make these books something new and not just more TOS (not that there is anything wrong with TOS). I will be buying and reading them all :)

As to the link being old, well I am sorry it was new to me, posted by M'Sharak on the STXI forum a couple days ago. I haven't been on the forum for a while so I'm behind in what is up and coming. I've been spending my evenings rewatching DS9 and now the STXI dvd and as soon as I finished them it I ran back to TrekBBS to catch up.

If someone has a newer link with more details about the STXI books please post it! And thank you again, I cannot wait to buy these!

I have to agree with a couple of the others. I would be really disappointed if these books were the same as the universe that we are all used to. Previous trek was awesome in that it had so much back ground to draw from.

While I was not as big a fan of the new movie as many people, I do think the books should reflect the feel and new direction of NuTrek.

I'm still trying to figure out why anyone would think the books WOULDN'T reflect the "feel" of the new film. There's no point to doing them if they can be swapped out for a "Classic" TOS story. At least, that's the way I see it.

Relax, folks. Breathe regular :)

^ Well, you've convinced me. Before your witty and persuasive post, I was excited for these new books, but thanks to your insightful input, I now know not to waste my money.

Thank you.

You took the words right out of my mouth. Not everyone hated the movie you know, people. Hell, some of us even loved it.
