Numbered Novels

Randor

Lieutenant Commander
What are some of the good numbered novels from TNG and DS9? I love The Siege that takes place weeks after DS9's pilot.

what else should I read?

Funny, I was going to start a similar thread but ask about Voyager novels.

For DS9, Fallen Heroes was the only one I read and I really enjoyed it.

DS9 #23: The 34th Rule - written by David R. George III & Armin Shimerman. As the title (and the fact that Armin Shimerman is one of the authors) indicates, it's a Quark-centric story and takes place during season 4.
DS9 #27: A Stitch in Time - written by Andrew J. Robinson. It's essentially Garak's life all the way until just after the Dominion War.

They're both pretty good novels and they've been referenced in the relaunch fiction. At least A Stitch in Time has, and I think I've seen a reference to the events of The 34th Rule at one point.

All the DS9 suggestions are good.

For TNG #18, Q-in-Law, Q meets Lwaxana. Pretty funny stuff.

DS9: 8: Warchild comes to mind. Hmm, Devil in the Sky (11?) I liked seeing the Horta again. #5 Fallen Heroes, if only for the very funny scene in Ops where everyone starts speaking in rhyme after meeting an alien for the first time. Though that may just be my odd sense of humor.

TNG: #13 Eye of the Beholder, which has always been a particular favorite of mine. For Geordi and Thala, there just aren't too many blind characters featured in the books. #35 The Romulan Stratagem - if you like Ro, Sela or both. #4 Survivors. A bit dark at the beginning, but it does give some background for Tasha Yar.

A "seconded" for A Stitch in Time and Q-in-Law (which contains the best Worf one-liner ever.)

The others that come to mind immediately:
DS9 #6, Betrayal.
TNG #7 Masks, #26 The Romulan Prize.
I also like #20 Spartacus, and #44 The Death of Princes.

And an anti-recommendation: I dislike K.W. Jeter's stuff for the DS9 novels (which is Bloodletter and Warped, though the latter isn't a numbered novel.)

For TNG I'd recommend:
#7 Masks, #13 The Eyes of the Beholders, #15 Fortune's Light, #18 Q-in-Law, #47-49 The Q Continuum trilogy, and #62 & 63 Maximum Warp duology.

And for DS9:
#2 The Siege, #4 The Big Game, #5 Fallen Heroes, #6 Betrayal, #7 Warchild, and #8 Antimatter.

The whole sequence near the end is one of the funniest things I've seen in Trek.

Rally? I'm a big fan of PAD and Q (and particularly that combination, having read Q-Squared first), but I hated that final sequence.

My recommendations:

TNG
Possession
Masks
The Romulan Prize
Doomsday World
A Rock and a Hard Place
The Death of Princes

DS9
Vengeance
Wrath of the Prophets
Antimatter
A Stitch in Time

Randor:

Lots of great suggestions here! Almost too many good ones for me to mention for either TNG or DS9, but...

I know they are not specifically numbered novels [and apologies if you already knew about them], I found the Millennium Trilogy to be among the best DS9 STLit stuff I have read thus far, with the exception of most of the DS9 relaunch books...

Just my 2 cents...

cheers,

^ I found the Millennium series among the worst books, Trek or otherwise, I've ever read. It's funny how that trilogy seems to divide readers.

Donners22:

Interesting! I read the trilogy last year and remember racing through it and very much enjoying it. I felt it was extremely well written, with a level of sophistication missing in a few of the other DS9 books.

I didn't know Millennium was a cause for disagreement.

I believe it was
(In response to Riker rhetorically asking what they were supposed about Lwaxana using her temporary Q powers to kick Q's ass up and down the ship)

"Sell tickets."

I have to third the recommendation of TNG's The Romulan Prize, along with The Blaze of Glory (which admittedly has some rough spots) and, if you want a more humorous tale set in TNG season 2, Strike Zone.
