Number One, captain of the Enterprise

Since the news was announced that Pike will be extending his stay as captain of the Discovery for at least this entire season, if not longer, and we haven't seen Number One in the trailer beaming aboard with him it's safe to assume that she'll be in command of the Enterprise during this time.

We don't know if Pike will make his captaincy of the Discovery permanent or if Season 3 will continue the revolving door tradition in the big chair, but I'm slightly intrigued by the idea of making Number One a canon captain of the Enterprise between Pike and Kirk.

How would you feel if Pike doesn't return to the Enterprise after this assignment? How about if one of the 19 spin-offs is an Enterprise show with Number One as captain and Spock's first first officer job? ;)

If they are adhering to Star Trek prime universe canon. Pike will return to being Captain of the 1701 shortly. Also, Spock will continue to serve on the 1701 under Pike as well (IE He won't be off on shore leave or go on extended loan to the Discovery any time soon.)

Per Kirk in TOS S1 episode: "The Menagerie"
http://www.chakoteya.net/StarTrek/16.htm

MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?

KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.

MENDEZ: About your age. Big, handsome man, vital, active.

KIRK: I took over the Enterprise from him. Spock served with him for several years.

SPOCK: Eleven years, four months, five days.

I for one will be interested to see if they explain WHY Pike isn't taking the 1701 itself on this mission to determine what the 'Red Bursts' are - and/or why the 1701 isn't teaming with the U.S.S. Discovery for this mission. Mr. Kurtzman has been saying all along that Constitution class ships are considered 'special'/'top of the line' - so I hope they have a good explanation why Pike's 1701 isn't being used in this situation at all.

Was there ever a detailed list of all the captains or are you basing it on what you saw in certain episodes? All you're doing is making an assumption based on available knowledge, but it was incomplete so Discovery is just giving you new information. Now it's April, Pike, Number One, Kirk and it always has been.

The other issue is - We don't know the time frame for ST: D S2. IE - All 15 episodes could occur over a couple weeks time; and in TOS itself (one example is TOS - "The Paradise Syndrome") - Spock was acting Captain of the 1701 for MONTHS while Kirk was living back on a planet with his memory wiped. <---- But every reference to the original 5 year mission talks about "Kirk being in command."

This is one incident where someone took temporary command of another ship for one mission. The thing I want to hear explained is WHY they need the U.S.S. Discovery (with Pike in command of it); instead of Pike using his current command (IE the 1701) to investigate the anomolies.

They most likely will.

And there is at least a hint of something wrong with the Enterprise in the trailer, there is a shot of worker bees inspecting the nacelles.

At the end of the day, does it matter? Number One was Captain of the Enterprise for a bit, just like Riker was Captain of the Ent-D for a bit. All this really does add trivia to Star Trek.

Who ever said Pike was taking command for a year or more, or the whole season, or even more than two episodes?!? You know during my time in the military you could have a temporary change of command for a single mission or objective. This idea that somehow Pike is a long term Commander for Discovery is bonkers. LOL

It's been confirmed that Mount will be in every episode and I doubt they'll split the story three ways (since they've said there's going to be a split with the Klingons), so unless the whole season is like 24 style, then it's reasonable to assume Pike will be around a while.

Just curious, where was it confirmed that he’d be in every episode? Link?

Now, he doesn't say that he will appear in every episode. He specifically said, contracted for all episodes. This means he could show up in the credits of some episodes but not actually be featured in those episodes. But it does seem he would be featured in majority of them, as CBS would not pony up the money for full season contract and not feature him in all/most episodes.

Anson Mount and Rebecca Romaine are pretty big casting choices so much so that i wouldn't doubt if fan reaction to them are good enough we might get a Captain Pike series on the enterprise somewhere down the road.

2. The anomalies are over 30,000 light years from each other, so it's take 50 years to get to some of them, or jump there with the functional Discovery/sporedrive.
While I get what you're saying, with Trek's track record of speed/time/distance that 30,000 light year journey could have taken a day or a week.

We live in a bizarro world where a TOS prequel is running by Voyager speed rules, even though the mere existence of the lead ship makes Voyager's entire journey into a joke.
