I think JJ Abrams made his stance on canonicity, continuity and casting, etc., very clear in his first interviews, and it wasn't all the different to Singer's stance on "Superman Returns".

Now JJ's busy making a movie; you want him to start throwing us red herrings? That's Paramount Marketing's job. JJ wants us to have a few good surprises on opening night, hence the current attempted secrecy.

There were no good surprises whatsoever with "Nemesis". That was its main problem.
