Nu Pon Farr

As long as they don't start greasing up with decontamination gel and playing with each others feet, there's a half way decent chance that I couldn't care less.

But those scenes were a hallmark of the sophisticated, intelligent storytelling we all miss. Before Star Trek was dumbed down for the masses.

If they do, I hope it is as a plot device (something relating to the population of nuVulcan) rather than simply titillation for the masses of mouth breathers who are only there because they like the big bangs.

As a Trekkie, I hope there is no 'love interest' between Spock and Uhura, it is just weird. As a student of Objectivism, I hope they don't make out that Spock wants to be with Uhura but leaves her because he feels he has some kind of 'duty' to his people - if he were to leave her, it should be made clear that it is not as a sacrifice, but that the preservation of his race is his highest value.

This could be a good thing. The relationship between Spock and Uhura is going to be hard to maintain if these characters are really going to maintain their roles as expected. Old Spock, for example, would never be whipped into preferentially changing personnel assignments by a lower ranking officer. Old Spock was so brutally logical that he would let his father die on an operating table because of the requirements of duty. Heck, Spock only grudgingly respected the Galileo crew's demands for proper burials.

Bringing Ta'Pring [Sic] into the mix could create some interesting drama and cool off the romance between Uhura and Spock. Let Uhura find out Spock is already technically married, let her see Ta'Pring as a hottie, and let her see Spock unable to resist meeting with her, and you've got plausible ground for Uhura deciding to tell Spock to take a hike.

After that, you could draw out the "will they, won't they again..." tension as a background feature rather than having Uhura tearing up and smooching Spock every time he beams down into a dangerous situation.

FWIW, Spock originally changed the assignments so that Uhura wasn't on the Enterprise, in an attempt to deflect possible accusations of favouritism toward his girlfriend/top student. Uhura made him change her assignment back to the Enterprise.

But yeah she's totally got Spock whipped . I can totally see TOS Uhura doing the same to "The Cage" Spock, too!

That scene was brilliant. Spock is banging a student, who is only using him to get the best assignment.

No one would have gotten over on old Spock like that.

EX: Journey to Babel. Mom tries to run a guilt trip on Spock to get him to help his dying father, and he says no in the name of duty. She smacks him upside the head and threatens never to forgive him and he still says no.

Spock wouldn't be banging a student. If he were, he would give her the most logical assignment possible and that would be the end of it.

Boy, are you guys in troub...ble! I don't think I can watch. :)

When I went down that road I was told most firmly that, with respect to NuTrek, no matter the situation, you should only think good thoughts. Or you should lie back and think of England .... ? Something like that. ;)

Anyway, the memory of your bravery shall live on in the minds of all right thinking citizenry!

^^ My problem with the new Spock-Uhura relationship is that Spock did not act very logically anywhere in the movie. New emoSpock just doesn't seem right to me. He's banging a student on the sly, sending Kirk out an airlock (albeit in a lifeboat) in anger, making out on the transporter pad, flipping off the Vulcan Science Academy (who were also emotionally bigoted), etc. He was not just "emotionally compromised" regarding his mother's death, he was "emotionally compromised" from the beginning of the movie.

Hey UFO, I love the avatar and the name. I wish I could find those old episodes. As a kid, I never missed an episode!

Thanks, I bought the remastered box set a year ago. It still stands up in many ways I think.

Yes, its a shame, because for my money he looks the part. But Spock's sometimes hard, even cold logic, was an important part of the dynamic I believe.
