Will post my final entry in this thread and mark it as such, but until then, this is a WIP. My entry is heavily influenced by legendary artist Chris Foss, so it's required some playing around with actually texturing the model, which is a big change from the usual silver skin ships I do. So here's a super quick look at where I started and ended up.
The original design was very bird like. I'd been browsing online and saw a ship in a pic that, for some reason, gave off a bird like vibe. That made me want to try something like that, plus I always liked Hawk's ship from season 2 of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. So this was essentially the starting point:
But I kept playing around with it, and at the same time looking at a lot of Foss' art from the 70's, especially the old Terran Trade Authority stuff. So the ship evolved to this:
Now one of the most striking features of Foss' work was the color work on the ships / machinery that he did. It was a cool mix of metallic, detailed hulls, and bold checkerboard or stripped patterns. At least in the stuff that stands out in my mind the most. The old PC game, Homeworld, was influenced by his style as well. So I'm still working on the texturing, trying to figure out how to get everything to layout and fit the way it should.
Which put's me right here as of now:
Still some hull work to be done, add more windows, a hangar bay and tweaking the textures. Hopefully I can squeeze all that in and finalize in the presentation that I want by the deadline.
