November Challenge - My Offering

BolianAuthor

Writer, Battlestar Urantia
Rear Admiral
Okay, as I said in the challenge announcement thread, IDK if this work has enough words to qualify, but even so, I've wanted to post this for a long time, and the "redemption" theme seemed a good a time as any.

Basically, this is a story that I wrote as a possible "pilot" for a new fanfic series called "Star Trek: Distant Star". The story is a direct sequel to VOY's finale, "Endgame", and deals with Admiral Janeway trying to redeem herself in her own eyes, after having wiped out the Borg in "Endgame", which she now considers an act of genocide, in hindsight.

So, here it is, for what it's worth... enjoy.

STAR TREK: DISTANT STAR

"WAKING NIGHTMARES"

WRITTEN BY: BolianAuthor

--------------------------------------------------------------

Admiral Nechayev paused, looking at the highly honored and decorated Captain sitting before her. There was another thought on her mind... one she wanted to openly address... a question she wanted answered, and a point she wanted to make VERY clear.

"Captain... I've read the report you submitted to Admiral Brooks last year regarding the Borg you called "Hugh"..." she said, as she paused, considering her next words. "... and I've been trying to figure out why you let him go." she asked.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard stiffened slightly in his Ready-Room chair, as he faced the Admiral.

"I thought I made my reasons clear." he replied, calmly.

Admiral Nechayev remained unphased... she wanted her answer.

"As I understand it... you found a single Borg at a crash site... brought it aboard the Enterprise... studied it... analyzed it... and eventually found a way to send it back to the Borg with a program that would have destroyed the entire Collective once and for all." she said.

Picard was reactionless, merely taking in the Admiral's words. He could tell she was becoming more irate.

"But instead, you nursed the Borg back to health, treated it like a guest, gave it a name, and then sent it home. Why?" she asked.

Picard was unphased by the Admiral's harsher tone... if need be, he can and will confront this issue directly. He looked Nechayev directly in the eye, as he gave his answer.

"Once Hugh was separated from the Borg Collective he began to... grow and evolve into something more than just an automaton. He was a person. When that happened, I had no choice but to respect his rights as an individual." he said, firm.

Nechayev allowed a thin, almost devious smile to break on her lips, as she faced Captain Picard.

"Of course you had a choice. You could've taken the opportunity to rid the Federation of a mortal enemy... one that has killed tens of thousands of innocent people, and which may kill even more." she stated.

Now Captain Picard was beginning to see where the Admiral was leading with all this. He decided to meet her level of intensity, and his voice now became firm, and equally determined.

"No one is more aware of the danger than I am. But I am also bound by my oath and my conscience to uphold certain principles. And I will not sacrifice them in order to--" he began, as he was interrupted by the Admiral.

"Your priority is to safeguard the lives of Federation citizens... NOT to wrestle with your conscience. Now I want to make it clear that if you have a similar opportunity in the future... an opportunity to destroy the Borg... you are under orders to take advantage of it. Is that understood?" she said, with a stern tone that was not to be misunderstood.

Captain Picard stood up to directly match the Admiral's gaze, as he looked right at her, standing ramrod straight.

"Yes, Sir!" Picard said, as Admiral Nechayev shot him one last look, as she turned and exited his Ready-Room, leaving him to stare after her.

"Computer, end program!" the female voice ordered.

The image of the Ready-Room of the Enterprise-D and Captain Picard vanished, to be replaced by the yellow and blue squares of the hologrid. Standing in the Holodeck arch, was the source of the feminine voice... Admiral Kathryn Janeway.

UTOPIA PLANITIA STARFLEET YARDS, MARS

A small orbital observation structure orbited high above the surface of Mars, in close proximity to the massive network of orbital drydocks, shipyards, offices, and ASDB offices that also shared orbit of the red planet. Beside the small observation structure, a single Galaxy-Class ship held position.

Inside the structure, a dozen high-ranking Starfleet Admirals were gathered, facing the set of large windows, that looked out into space, and to the nearby starship. Their gazes were then drawn to a lone Starfleet Command officer... Commander rank. The man stepped behind a podium, and placed a large PADD on the surface, as he activated it, and looked to the Admirals, clearing his throat, as he began to speak.

"Gentlemen... I thank you for coming. I know you are all very busy. I think you'll all agree, this is worth it." he began.

The Commander directed the Admirals to the Galaxy-Class ship outside.

"Behold... the U.S.S. Rutan. In every regard, your typical, run-of-the-mill Galaxy-Class ship." he began. "But I urge you to look closer... much closer... and tell me what you see." he said, breaking into a small smile.

The Admirals all looked close and hard at the Rutan, taking in the minute details on the ship's hull. Finally, one of the Admirals, a Benzite, spoke up, looking to the Commander.

"I see it! It looks like there are new additional phaser banks on the upper and lower saucer, as well as the dorsal and ventral engineering hull!" he exclaimed.

This brought a chuckle from the Commander, as all the other Admirals turned to face him again.

"Very perceptive, Admiral Bruken, but you are wrong... those are not phaser banks." he began, as he turned to face the ship outside. "Allow me to demonstrate." he said, as he then tapped his communicator. "Delaney to Rutan... deploy armor!" he instructed.

In space, the U.S.S. Rutan held position, as at the same time, the new hull additions generated a surrounding shell of ablative hull armor, which totally encased the ship.

Inside the structure, the Admirals all gasped in awe at the sight they were witnessing. Finally, as the sight began to settle in, they again turned to face the Commander, who was now beaming with pride.

"It's called deployable hull armor." he said, smiling. "The folks at Starfleet R&D and the Vulcan Science Institute have been working with the minds at both M.I.T. and the Daystrom Institute, to come up with this... a way of generating a layer of ablative armor that would encase a ship fully... even a ship with as many windows as a Galaxy-Class ship... so that the entire vessel can be fully protected, on demand. This is the end result of that research... deployable hull armor." Commander Delaney explained.

The Admirals were floored. They just looked back at the now-armored Galaxy-Class drifting outside.

RESIDENCE OF ADMIRAL JANEWAY, SAN FRANCISCO, EARTH

The large wall monitor was displaying the current broadcast from GNN - the Galactic News Network. The anchorman was relaying information about an upcoming event... an event that Admiral Janeway knew was coming...

"And in San Francisco, on Earth, preparations continue for the upcoming twentieth celebration of Voyager Day... the day that Captain Kathryn Janeway successfully brought Voyager home. Every year, the event draws spectators from all over the Federation to the City of San Francisco, and the grounds of Starfleet Headquarters, as we all celebrate the triumph of Voyager's return home, and the heroism of her crew. This year's twentieth celebration promises to be no less grand." the male anchorman stated, as Admiral Janeway walked over to the wall monitor.

"Computer, deactivate broadcast." she ordered, as the screen went black, showing only her own reflection.

She walked over to her desk, and picked up her mug of tea, taking a sip, as she was interrupted by a call from her home's computer.

"Incoming transmission, from the Starship Rhode Island." the computer relayed.

Janeway set her tea down, and activated her desk computer, the light from the screen illuminating her face, in the otherwise dimly lit room. She smiled, at the sight of who was on the other end.

"Harry... congratulations on your promotion!" she said, smiling. "You'll make a fantastic First Officer for Captain Karkhun." she added.

On the other end, Commander Harry Kim returned his former Captain's smile.

"Thank you, Admiral." he began. "The Rhode Island won't be leaving orbit for another two days... I thought that since I'll have some time... maybe we could get together and chat a bit... talk about old times." he said.

Janeway smiled, looking into the screen.

"Harry." she said. "Of course we can get together. I'll clear my schedule for the next two days. As a matter of fact... I can use someone to talk to... I've been thinking about something, and it's been troubling my mind." she said.

U.S.S. RHODE ISLAND - NOVA-CLASS - EARTH ORBIT

The small ship circled the Earth slowly.

Inside the ship, Admiral Janeway sat across from Commander Kim in his quarters. The two were in the final stages of a dinner, and Kim added more tea to the Admiral's glass.

"So, Admiral... what's this issue that's been troubling your mind recently?" he asked.

Janeway wiped her lips with a napkin, as she leaned forward to explain the matter.

"Harry... you know the anniversary is coming up... twenty years since I brought Voyager home. And I know that in another few years, I am going to initiate that chain of events, by going back into the past." she said.

"A temporal causality loop?" Kim asked.

Janeway shook her head.

"It's more complicated then that, Mister Kim. You see, for twenty years, I have remained comfortable that since Voyager was home, everything was rosy... we came home with technology that is being developed now. That ensured that the Federation was able to rise out of the abyss after the Dominion War, and remain stronger than any other powers." she began. "But I've been thinking... at what cost? For all intents and purposes, in a few years, I will commit an act of genocide, in the name of getting Voyager home. Will it be justified, to get the ship home, and exalt the Federation into its current state?" she asked.

Kim took a sip of tea, and nodded, as he placed the glass down.

"Admiral, this future exists because of what you did. You know, yesterday, the Utopia Planitia Yards conducted the first successful test of the new hull armor, on the Rutan. Even though you brought that technology with you on Voyager, it was not until now, that we were able to reproduce the technology from scratch. So who is to say that any research into that technology would not have happened if Voyager had not given us the base model to start from?" he asked. "At the time of the Dominion War, the galactic climate dictated that the Federation explore more defensive and military avenues of technology... it was not until Voyager returned, that the Borg threat was deemed destroyed." he added.

Janeway just shook her head.

"But what does that say about the Federation as a whole? I recently reviewed a record of one of the Enterprise-D's logs on the Holodeck. At one time, Admiral Nechayev gave Captain Jean-Luc Picard an EXPLICIT order to destroy the Borg... the entire Collective, if he was ever faced with such an opportunity. And this log record was from a pre-Dominion War Federation... before the Borg battle from the Typhon Sector to Earth. And a peacetime Starfleet Admiral was essentially ordering an act of genocide. What does that say? Were we so threatened by the Borg, that we would resort to violating the very essence of the Prime Directive?" she asked.

Harry pushed his now empty plate aside on the table, as he responded.

"Again, Admiral... I bring up the armor technology test. As I understand it, the person in charge of the project was Admiral Shelby. If you will recall, she was Starfleet's expert on the Borg Collective during the time of Wolf 359. I remind you, that her efforts into anti-Borg technologies gave life to numerous research projects... the concept for this new hull armor was actually on the drawing board a long time ago... we just did not have the means to explore it at the time. Voyager's return early may have expedited the advances a little, but I don't think anything would have changed so drastically." he said.

Janeway sat back, and looked her old friend in the eye.

"I remember our first encounter with Species 8-4-7-2." she began. "I remember the sight of a dozen Borg Cubes, utterly demolished, in a graveyard of Borg ships. I remember that during that mission, Commander Chakotay told me how the Borg were like a Scorpion... that it was their nature to be the way they were, and that nothing could change the nature of the beast. It was simply the way things were. Trouble is, he was right." she said, pausing a moment. "But if that is the case, does it justify the extinction of a race, just to ensure the safety of our own culture? Can't we try to find some way to allow nature to stay its course, and deal with each threat as it arrives?" she asked.

Kim just shared his former Captain's look, sympathizing with her. This was obviously troubling her a great deal.

"Well... if it's any comfort to you, Admiral... in a few years, I'll be the one who tries to stop you." he said, smiling a bit, hoping to cheer her up a little.

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS - SPACEDOCK

The proud old ship sat inside the massive structure, anchored to her berth by mooring beams and a gangway, leading from the dock to the starboard airlock, as around the ship, service craft and Workbees scurried about. On the outer hull, EVA teams were busy putting the final touches on the new armor deployment systems.

Inside the ship, Admiral Janeway stepped out of the turbolift, and onto the Bridge, as the lead service technician noticed her, and snapped to attention.

"Admiral on deck!" he shouted out, as everyone stopped what they were doing, and snapped to attention, facing Janeway.

Janeway looked around her old Bridge, taking in the sights and sounds. A lot was being changed... new LCARS, new station enhancements, new carpet and chairs... even the doors were new. The Bridge also seemed to be a different color now. Gone was the old brushed metal railing behind the Captain and First Officer's chairs... in its place, was a new wooden rail, that curved around the seating area. The Bridge seemed warmer somehow now... a touch more luxury... more like a Nebula-Class ship, than an Intrepid.

"As you were." she stated, allowing the techs to get back to work, as she walked to meet the lead technician.

"Status report." she asked.

The man began leading her around the Bridge, as he began to relay his report.

"The new software upgrades are complete... Engineering is running a final set of diagnostics on them now. The armor upgrades are almost finished... we'll be done by the end of the day." he said, as he paused in front of an open wall panel, which was exposing a cluster of bio-neural gelpacks, still hooked into the subsystem wall. "As you can see, we're still in the process of installing the new iso-neural circuitry systems." he added. "I estimate it'll take my teams another day to complete that task... we still have decks nine and twelve to complete." he stated.

Janeway nodded.

"I want to know the second this ship is ready to fly... is that clear?" she asked.

"Of course, Admiral." the tech replied.

"How about the weapons systems?" she asked.

"The phaser upgrades were completed yesterday morning. The supply of transphasic and chronometric torpedoes will arrive late tonight." he said.

Janeway suddenly flashed back to the very first time she had heard of those new weapons... all those years ago on Voyager, when the ship was still in the Delta Quadrant, so far from home...

The image on the Conference Room monitor showed the data clear as day... a rotating image of a photon torpedo casing, with multiple subspace fields emanating from it.

"They are called "transphasic torpedoes"... a typical photonic weapon, with an antimatter warhead, that has been enhanced to generate multiple subspace fields... allowing the unit to be in a constant state of spatial flux, thereby allowing the weapon to penetrate through any known shielding system." stated Seven of Nine, as she looked to the crew to get their reactions.

Captain Janeway moved closer to the monitor, and took in the data on it.

"And you believe that we can make these modifications to our own torpedoes?" she asked.

"Correct." Seven replied.

Tuvok raised an eyebrow.

"Fascinating. If this technology proves compatible with our own systems, we may finally gain a significant tactical advantage over the Borg, should we encounter any of their vessels." he stated.

Even though Seven had long since abandoned her Borg identity, and regarded herself as an individual, there was still some distant part of her being which held a perverse pride in her previous Borg status... the knowledge that what she once was still inspired such fear and awe at the same time. That part of her did not care for comments like Tuvok's.

"The Borg are resourceful... they may adapt." she shot back. "However... this will certainly ensure that Voyager gains an edge... an advantage we can exploit." she said.

"I agree." Chakotay added, also stepping forward. "I say we give it a try... we can use any advantage we can get." he said.

Janeway allowed a smile to escape to the surface, as she looked at her crew, enthused by this prospect.

"Very well... we'll give it a try." she said. "B'Elanna, Tom, Tuvok... I want you to work with Seven on this. We'll modify a handful of torpedoes, and test them in the nearest asteroid field we can find. Mister Paris... find me a collection of rocks to shoot at." she said, smiling.

Suddenly, Janeway was brought back into the present, standing on the Voyager Bridge, inside Spacedock. She looked to the viewscreen, which showed the forward view, looking to the massive space doors, as small craft zipped about, attending to their business. She then looked back to the technician.

"Very well. I'll remain on Starbase, if you need me... call me when the ship is ready." she said, as she moved to leave the Bridge.

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS - SPACEDOCK

The starship remained docked at her berth, the interior lights all dimmed, save for a few on the Bridge, and a couple here and there on the engineering hull. The warp nacelles were powered down, and the service crafts and Workbees had long since left, having completed their jobs.

On the Bridge, the turbolift doors slid open, allowing Admiral Janeway to enter. The Bridge was totally vacant now, and all open panels had since been sealed up. All the refit work was now finished. The lights were on, but they were on a low setting.

Janeway walked over to her old command chair, and lovingly ran her fingers over the fabric, allowing the feel to take her mind back to the past. Finally, after a long nostalgic moment, she sat down again, her hands clasping the arms of the chair, as she looked forward.

"Computer... initiate startup sequence." she ordered.

Immediately, the lights came to full intensity, and all the computer terminals and stations illuminated to life, and began blinking, as the Bridge was once again filled with the sounds of life.

"Activate main viewscreen, forward view." she instructed, as the screen came to life, showing the forward view, of the massive space doors, still shut tight.

"Computer... I am inputting a set of spatial coordinates... initiate auto-navigation sequence, and set a course following these coordinates." she said, as she inputted the data into her side terminal.

"Acknowledged." the computer responded.

"Computer... release all moorings, and detach gangway. Prepare to leave dock, one-quarter impulse power." she said.

In the massive dock interior, Voyager's nacelles illuminated to life, as the mooring beams shut off, and the gangway began to pull away from the ship. Very slowly, Voyager began to drift forward.

U.S.S. RIGEL - AKIRA-CLASS - SPACEDOCK

In the berth behind and to the left of Voyager, was the Rigel... the large Akira-Class sat in its own berth, seemingly watching, as the Voyager slowly moved ever forward.

On board the Rigel, the ship's Captain was inside the turbolift, en route to the Bridge, when the call came in from the Dockmaster.

"Dock Control to Rigel... someone is stealing the Starship Voyager... you are ordered to pursue and detain." the man's voice said.

The Captain grew a puzzled look, as he tapped his communicator.

"I'm on my way to the Bridge now. Acknowledged, Dock Control." he replied, as the lift doors opened, allowing him to step onto the Bridge, as his First Officer and crew looked to him.

"What've we got?" he asked, as he looked to the screen, as he moved to the center of the Bridge.

"Admiral Janeway." his First Officer began. "She's taking Voyager out of the dock, without prior clearance. She's refusing to answer our hails, and as you can see, the doors are still closed." he said.

Indeed, as the Captain looked, he could see that the space doors were still quite closed, and Voyager was still heading for them.

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS - SPACEDOCK

As Janeway sat in her chair, watching the screen, the call came through on the ship's intercom...

"Admiral Janeway... you are ordered to power down, and come to a complete stop... you do not have clearance to take the ship." the Captain's voice stated. "In case you have not noticed, the space doors are still closed." he added.

"Computer... ready a volley of photon torpedoes." Janeway said.

"Torpedoes ready." the computer replied.

"Fire." she said, looking at the doors on the screen.

Inside the dock, as the Rigel followed behind Voyager, Voyager let loose with four photon torpedoes, that slammed directly into the space doors, smashing a massive hole into them, that almost completely destroyed them, as the stars of the outside space became visible.

U.S.S. RIGEL - AKIRA-CLASS - SPACEDOCK

On the Bridge, the Captain and First Officer looked at the hole, and Voyager moving to exit the dock, looks of utter disbelief on their faces.

"Oh, no, she didn't!" the Captain exclaimed.

"She did." the First Officer said, nodding.

The expression on the face of the Captain was not one of amusement. He rushed to sit down in his command seat, and looked directly at the screen.

"Red alert! All hands to battlestations! Standby all weapons systems! Initiate pursuit course!" he ordered, as the red alert klaxon began blaring, and the lights on the Bridge dimmed, and turned red.

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS

The ship cleared the gash in the space doors, and made its way into open space, picking up speed as it moved further from the massive Starbase.

As Voyager grew farther from the station, two Galaxy-Class ships appeared, from either side of the station, and moved to pursue Voyager, joining the Rigel, which was now clearing the dock itself.

The twin Galaxies fired multiple warning phaser shots, the beams lancing out into space, missing Voyager by mere feet.

Voyager's warp engines powered up to full intensity, as the ship suddenly shot itself into high warp, leaving the Rigel and the two Galaxies behind.

Unphased, the twin Galaxies powered up their own warp engines, and also shot into high warp, in hot pursuit of Voyager.

U.S.S. EMISSARY - MERCURY-CLASS

The ship sat in orbit of a blue Class-M planet, which rotated below.

Inside the ship, Captain Jansen walked through the corridor, as Commander Unari gave him PADD after PADD to look over.

"This is Commander Preston's report on the starboard power relay... and his results from the level-one diagnostic. This one is Lieutenant Bartel's request to use the port lateral sensor array for her study of the Mufarri Quasar... she'll need it for both beta and delta shifts. And this is the crew performance report you asked for." she said, as Jansen struggled to look everything over.

Suddenly, both officers paused, as an Ensign rushed to catch up with them, and moved to speak to Captain Jansen.

"Sir!" he stated.

"One moment, Ensign." Jansen said, raising a finger, as he handed one of the PADDs back to Unari.

"Tell Lieutenant Bartel her survey of the Mufarri Quasar will have to wait... we're overdue for our arrival at the Norvan System... Ambassador Forat is waiting to be picked up... and we cannot delay our arrival at Brulen II any longer... if we do, we'll arrive in the middle of one of their global dust-storms." he said.

"Aye, Sir." Unari said, as Jansen shoved the PADDs back to her, which she struggled to hold, without dropping.

"Sir?" the Ensign tried again.

"Yes, what is it?" he asked.

"Sir, there is a most urgent message for you, from Admiral Jellico. He's standing by, Sir." the Ensign relayed.

Jansen shared a look with both the Ensign and Commander Unari, as he took a deep breath and a long sigh.

"Very well. Thank you, Ensign. I'll take the message in my Ready-Room." he said, as he broke from the pair, and moved off, heading for the nearest turbolift.

U.S.S. EMISSARY - MERCURY-CLASS

The ship screamed through space at maximum warp, the stars zipping by as long streaks of white light.

In the Conference Room, the large wall monitor displayed the image of Admiral Janeway, complete with a time index monitor on the bottom part of the screen, as the image of Janeway spoke, looking directly at the camera.

"... I realize that in taking this action, I am, in a way violating the Prime Directive. However, I am doing so to ensure that it is not violated in the first place. I cannot ethically justify the existence of a Federation that was created by means of genocide, and will ensure that such a legacy does not befall our Federation. Janeway out." she said, as the image went black, followed by the emblem of the UFP.

Captain Jansen turned around in his seat, looking to his crew for reactions.

"That message was sent just prior to her leaving Spacedock." he began. "Admiral Jellico beleives that Voyager is headed for Distant Star... that is where she'll need to be, to make her next move." he said.

"Why Distant Star, Sir?" Preston asked.

"The station's Wormhole Control Center." Unari replied. "She'll need the station's wormhole generator to get to where she's planning to go. Ambassador Mortak told Admiral Jellico that Janeway tried to contact the House of Korrath, regarding an experimental chrono-quantum flux generator. Korrath himself knew nothing of such a device, stating that he had just begun working with nadion fields." she stated.

Jansen leaned forward, resting his arms on the conference table.

"Admiral Janeway is planning to go back in time... to stop herself from helping Voyager get back home." he said. "It seems that she is feeling regret regarding her actions that led to the demise of the Borg Collective. She sees it as an act of genocide." he added.

Preston again spoke up.

"But Sir... the Admiral Janeway that went back to help Voyager won't do so for another three years... therefore, that Admiral Janeway does not exist yet... so how can our Janeway stop her?" he asked.

"Because that future Janeway DOES exist... in the past." he began. "You see... even though our Janeway won't become that future Janeway for another three years, the fact is, that at one point, there WAS an event that triggered this timeline. The Admiral Janeway that helped Voyager DOES still exits, in this reality's past. If that were not the case, our current timeline would not exist. Simple as that. That's why she's going into the past... to stop her future self, from helping her past self. And to accomplish that, she'll need to modify the wormhole generator on Distant Star... get it to tie in with Voyager's main navigational deflector, so she can initiate a temporal reversion pulse." he said.

The crew looked to each other, the gravity of the situation settling in. Finally, Captain Jansen stood up, looking to his crew.

"We've been ordered home... this situation takes full priority." he said, as he looked to Commander Unari. "Commander... have CONN set a course for Distant Star... maximum warp!" he stated.

U.S.S. EMISSARY - MERCURY-CLASS

The ship screamed through space at maximum warp, the stars zipping by as long streaks of white light.

"Captain's Log, U.S.S. Emissary, Captain Gabriel Jansen. Admiral Kathryn Janeway, one of Starfleet's most decorated officers, has gone rogue. Apparently feeling emotions of remorse, over the actions she will take to destroy the Borg, she has commandeered the Starship Voyager, and is on a mission to travel back through time, to stop her future self from destroying the Borg. To accomplish that goal, we believe that she has set a course for Distant Star. If that is the case, Voyager will arrive in the Perimeter region in less than a day. If Admiral Janeway is successful, she will awaken one of the Federation's greatest nightmares... the Borg Collective."

On the Bridge, Commander Unari and the crew looked to Captain Jansen with wondering eyes, as he stepped out of the turbolift, and onto the Bridge, making his way down to the Command area, as the stars shot by on the main viewscreen.

"Well? What news?" Unari asked.

"I've just spoken to Admiral Jellico. He tells me that Admiral Hitomi is leading a Federation task force to Distant Star, that will intercept and stop Janeway. We are ordered to also participate." he said.

"How many ships?" she asked.

"Five starships, led by the Insignia... Battle Group Omega is under orders to stop Voyager, using any and all necessary force... and if need be... destroy Voyager, and Admiral Janeway." he stated, grimly.

The crew looked to him with uncertain eyes... was this really going down? Were they really about to face the prospect that they would have to fire upon another Federation ship?

As Commander Unari remained standing, Jansen slowly sat down in his command chair, and looked straight at the viewscreen, as Unari regarded him, studying his uncertain yet grim look, as he stared forward.

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS

The ship dropped out of high warp, coming to a dead stop in the middle of open space.

Inside, on the Bridge, the computer alerted the Admiral to a new set of readings...

"Klingon Heavy Cruiser de-cloaking... Attack Wind-Class." the computer stated, matter-of-factly.

In space, the stars began to warble and distort, as gradually, the mighty Klingon vessel took shape, holding position in front of Voyager.

On the Bridge of Voyager, the main viewscreen displayed the image of the Klingon ship, as it was quickly replaced by the image of the Klingon Captain, on his Bridge.

"Captain Kovaat... a pleasure, as always." Janeway stated. "Do you have what I requested?" she added.

"Aye... I do." Kovaat began. "Transmit your coordinates, and I will beam it to your vessel." he said.

Janeway pressed some buttons on the OPS console, transmitting the data.

"Done." she said.

On the other end, Kovaat also inputted some data into a panel, and looked back to Janeway, nodding.

"It is done... you have the item." he began. "I believe that this completes my obligation to you." he stated.

"Agreed. Thank you, Kovaat." Janeway said, as she closed the channel.

Janeway walked back to her command chair, and tapped her communicator, as she sat down, looking to the viewscreen.

"Janeway to Doctor... is the device installed and ready?" she asked.

"Yes, Captain... I've just finished the last of the hookups... but I remind you... I'm a Doctor, not an Engineer... I make no guarantees." the familiar E.M.H.'s voice said, over the intercom.

"Thank you, Doctor... it'll work fine." Janeway began, as she now turned her attention to the ship's computer. "Computer... engage cloak, and resume course for Distant Star, maximum warp!" she said.

In space, the Starship Voyager began moving off, increasing speed, as at the same time, the ship began to warble and distort, until finally, it vanished from view, leaving only empty space visible. Seconds later, in the far distance, a pinpoint warp flash became visible for a second, as the now-cloaked ship shot into high warp once again.

U.S.S. EMISSARY - MERCURY-CLASS

The streaking stars shrunk back to mere pinpoints of white light, as the ship came shooting out of warp, and began an impulse run towards Distant Star.

Beside Distant Star, holding position, was Admiral Hitomi's task force.

STARBASE DS-25 - DISTANT STAR - THE PERIMETER SECTOR

In OPS, Admiral Jellico and the command staff looked to the main viewscreen, which showed the image of Emissary on her fast approach, as the ship grew ever larger on the monitor.

Jellico walked over to the Communications station, and activated the intercom system.

"Emissary... welcome home. I'm glad you could join us." he began. "We expect Voyager's arrival within the hour." he stated.

Behind Jellico, Valrek, the Romulan Observer, moved a few paces forward, and spoke up, addressing the Admiral.

"Admiral... if this renegade Admiral of yours is en route to this outpost, I'm certain she anticipates you will try to stop her." he said.

"Correct." Jellico replied.

"If I may... a suggestion?" Valrek stated.

"Go ahead." Jellico said, nodding.

"If I understand her profile correctly, this Admiral Janeway has made friends of more than a few Klingon houses... I suggest it would be prudent to have your little fleet outside, establish an active tachyon detection network." he said, calmly.

Jellico now turned his body around, to fully face Valrek.

"You think she's equipped Voyager with a cloak?" he asked, as the crew also looked to Valrek.

Valrek raised his right eyebrow.

"You don't?" he rebutted. "If I were this Janeway, I would certainly anticipate a focused effort to stop me, and I would use whatever advantage I could... including getting my hands on a Klingon cloaking device." he stated.

Suddenly, the gravity of the idea sank in, and Jellico's face paled.

"If that's the case... Voyager could already be right on our front doorstep..." he said, as he quickly turned to the Tactical station, pointing at the officer manning it. "Quickly, begin an intensive tachyon sweep... everything up to two light-years from this station!" he barked.

"Aye, Admiral." the man said, as he began working the console.

The crew waited in silence for a long series of minutes, until finally, the Tactical Officer spoke up.

"Sir! Reading a sudden neutron energy surge!" he called out, as Jellico moved to face the main screen.

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS

On the Bridge, Janeway looked at the screen, which showed Distant Star, along with the small fleet of starships. She squinted her eyes slightly with frustration, as she reached to her side console, and typed in some instructions.

"Computer... drop the cloak, and activate armor." she stated.

In space, the background stars began to warble and distort, until finally, the form of the U.S.S. Voyager became fully visible. Instantly, the layers of ablative hull armor began to envelop the ship's hull.

U.S.S. INSIGNIA - INSIGNIA-CLASS

On the Bridge, everything was at red alert, as Admiral Hitomi quickly arose from the command chair, and moved to the main viewscreen, and tapped his communicator.

"Hitomi to all ships... open fire! I repeat, open fire, all weapons!" he shouted.

In space, the fleet of six ships, including the Emissary, let loose with all their weapons, at Voyager.

STARBASE DS-25 - DISTANT STAR - WORMHOLE CONTROL ROOM

Inside the large room, which was full of computer terminals, surrounding the primary event generator, the intruder alert alarm suddenly began blaring loudly, as automatically the crew jumped into action, as the lead technician signaled the OPS center.

"Wormhole Control to OPS... someone is trying to override the security codes to the station's shields and transporter systems... initiating forcefield." he called out, as he pressed some buttons on the console in front of him, as he looked back, to the generator.

The forcefield began to take form around the wormhole generator, as at the same time, a Starfleet transporter beam attempted to lock onto it. The two fields of energy conflicted with one another, one trying to push the other away, as both fields flickered and fizzled.

"OPS, it's not holding! The feedback from Voyager's transporter beam is disrupting the forcefield!" he said, looking back to his console.

After a second, he looked up, noticing that all of a sudden, the intruder alarms had ceased... all was again quiet. Cautiously, he began to turn his head back again...

Sure enough, the generator was now gone... the center of the room devoid of its centerpiece.

STARBASE DS-25 - DISTANT STAR - OPS CENTER

"Sir, she has the generator!" the Tactical Officer called to Jellico, as he looked to the screen with anger.

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS

The ship began to move off, as the task force maintained fire on the ship. As Voyager passed the fleet, it fired back some warning phaser shots, just as the ship began to ripple and distort, as it once again cloaked itself, disappearing from view.

STARBASE DS-25 - DISTANT STAR - OPS CENTER

Jellico slammed his left hand down hard, on the Tactical console, as he watched Voyager disappear from view, on the screen.

STARBASE DS-25 - DISTANT STAR - THE PERIMETER SECTOR

In the OPS Center, Admiral Jellico stood with both Admiral Hitomi, and Captain Jansen, as he spoke via subspace, with the Federation President.

"...I understand that, Madam President... Voyager's appearance was a surprise to us... we were not expecting its arrival for at least another hour. Admiral Janeway was using a Klingon cloaking device, which she has apparently fitted to Voyager." Jellico said.

On the other end, President Mallers took up a PADD, and recited some data from it.

"Yes... I spoke with Chancellor K'Taal... he told me that a ship from the House of M'Oreg rendezvoused with Voyager in the Avernathi Sector roughly half a day ago. The Captain of that ship admitted that he transported a Klingon cloak to Janeway. He stated that it was to repay a debt he owed the Admiral." she began. "What's the damage to your station?" she asked.

Jellico looked down at the floor for a moment, before looking back to the President.

"No damage to the station itself. However... she took our wormhole generator." he said, sullen.

"What?!" Mallers cried out. "She has your wormhole generator?!" the President replied.

"Madam President, as you are aware, Admiral Janeway was the person who headed the development team for the Lifeline Project... she knew all the command sequence codes for the device... she was able to transport it to Voyager, bypassing the automated forcefield." Jellico stated.

Admiral Hitomi stepped forward, and addressed the President.

"Madam President, Admiral Janeway still faces the task of fitting the device to Voyager's systems... she'll need to integrate the generator matrix into Voyager's main navigational deflector. I estimate that at best, with two people working on such an endeavor, it'll take her at least seven hours to accomplish the task... Voyager IS still here, Madam President. With your order, I can have my task force--" he began.

"No." Mallers began, interrupting. I don't want any more confrontations with Voyager, until we get a clear indication of just where Janeway might be, and until we are prepared. Admiral Jellico, how fast can your station's teams install the new armor technology onto the Emissary?" she asked.

"Roughly eleven hours." he said.

"Very good. Get to it. I'll be in touch. Mallers out." she said, closing the channel, as the two Admirals and one Captain shared looks.

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS

On the Bridge, Admiral Janeway was laying down on the floor, beside an open wall panel underneath one of the large aft stations. She fumbled for a hand calibrator, finding it. She reached into the exposed area of circuitry, and began fusing some connections. After a few moments, she tapped her communicator.

"Janeway to Doctor... how's that?" she asked.

"Very good, Admiral... the plasma flow is now at ninety-nine percent. All we have to do now, is re-route the secondary flow regulators to the primary deflector pathways." the E.M.H. replied, over the comm.

"Very well... I'll proceed to--" Janeway began, as she was disturbed by a call from the ship's computer, as an alarm began to sound.

"Warning... contact has been made with an active tachyon field." the computer relayed.

"Dammit!" Janeway stated, as she got back on her two feet, and began to walk to the command area.

Just then, the ship was rocked, apparently by a direct weapons hit. Seconds later, a second impact followed.

"Warning... Federation starship approaching." the computer stated.

Just then, a forced communication came through, on Voyager's comm system.

"This is Captain William T. Riker, of the Starship Titan, to Admiral Janeway, on Voyager. Admiral, you are ordered to stand down. We have locked onto your vessel, and are prepared to use any necessary force. Power down your engines, drop your cloak and shields, come to a full stop, and prepare to be boarded." he said.

Admiral Janeway squinted her eyes in anger, as she looked to the screen. She had not come this far, to be stopped like this...

-- -- --

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS

The ship was rocked by another weapons hit, as Admiral Janeway moved back to her command chair, and began pressing buttons on her console.

"Computer... disengage the cloaking device, and raise shields to full power. Standby on phasers. Ready quantum and transphasic torpedoes. Prepare to engage evasive maneuvers... pattern Kirk-Omega-Three." she told the computer.

In space, Voyager once again appeared, as the cloaking shields began to drop. As the ship became fully realized, Voyager shot upwards, angled about, and began to initiate a direct run towards the target...

U.S.S. TITAN - LUNA-CLASS

On the Bridge, the CONN Officer regarded his data, as he looked up to Captain Riker, who was standing right behind him, his hand resting on the CONN chair.

"Sir... she's making a run right towards us!" he began. "All of Voyager's weapons systems have been fully powered, Sir." he stated, as Riker looked back to him, nodding.

"Tactical... open fire... dispersal pattern Sierra." Riker ordered, still looking at the main viewscreen.

In space, Voyager raced towards the Titan, just as a volley of quantum torpedoes spat out of Riker's ship, and raced towards Voyager.

As Voyager raced past, Janeway's ship fired multiple phaser beams, from various banks, and scored direct hits with every single incoming torpedo, destroying them, before any could harm Voyager, as the ship sailed through the resulting explosions, triumphant.

U.S.S. TITAN - LUNA-CLASS

On the Bridge, the Tactical Officer was frantically working his panel.

"Impossible, Sir! No way any human could return fire fast enough to have intercepted those torpedoes!" he called out.

Riker squinted one eye in anger, as he looked at the screen.

"The Doctor." he said, disdainfully.

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS

Janeway stood up, and moved forward a few paces.

"Computer, activate the generator... main navigational deflector at full power... engage event sequence... set target for the specified temporal and spatial coordinates... Delta Quadrant, Invukki Torennek Sector, spatial grid delta-five-zero, subquadrant twelve!" she ordered.

In space, Voyager raced past, Titan in hot pursuit, just as Voyager's primary deflector dish shot out a bluish-green pulse of energy, which after but a second, began to create a swirling vortex of energy, which began to expand slowly.

The Titan maintained fire, as Voyager grew closer to the newborn anomaly. Voyager began to once again return fire, using aft phasers.

U.S.S. TITAN - LUNA-CLASS

Captain Riker stared at the image of Voyager, the stars drifting by fast, as his vessel continued giving chase.

"Stay with her, Ensign!" he told the CONN Officer.

The Ensign worked his panel.

"Sir, she's taking Voyager into the vortex!" he stated.

Riker glared at Voyager, as he gave his next order...

"Computer, launch record buoy, and include all present sensor data... transmit a copy of all data to Starbase Distant Star." he ordered.

"Acknowledged... buoy launched... message sent." the computer replied.

Riker placed a hand on the shoulder of the CONN Ensign.

"Ensign Knight... take us in after her... full impulse!" he said.

"Aye, Sir!" Knight replied, his voice slightly uncertain.

In space, the Titan shot forward at full impulse, and hurled itself into the vortex, following Voyager, leaving the current time and place behind.

STARBASE DS-25 - DISTANT STAR - THE PERIMETER SECTOR

The U.S.S. Emissary sat docked at the station, as work crews and service craft finished the installation work for the ship's new hull armor, as Admiral Hitomi's task force held position, near the station.

A duo of Workbees departed the hull of Emissary, and began a run back towards the station, first heading out into open space, just as a Galaxy-Class ship came to a drift beside the station, holding position.

"Captain's Log, U.S.S. Emissary, Captain Gabriel Jansen. Work is almost complete on our new hull armor. It has been nine hours since Voyager managed to escape with Distant Star's wormhole generator. By Admiral Hitomi's estimates, Admiral Janeway may by now have successfully taken Voyager in the past... there is no way to know for certain. In the meantime, the U.S.S. Brunhilde has just arrived, and Captain Wright has asked to immediately meet with both Admiral Jellico, and Admiral Hitomi."

In the OPS Center, all eyes faced the turbolift, as the doors hissed open, allowing Captain Wright to enter the room, as he walked down the steps to shake hands with the two Admirals present.

Wright was a very formidable-looking Captain... a middle-aged human, he had a very strong build, and a gruff appearance on his face. His face also displayed the lines and wrinkles that came with many years of experience. He had done and seen much in his life, and as soon as anyone looked him in the eye, they could instantly respect him. You could tell by just looking once at this man, that he was totally down-to-business, and no-nonsense.

"Admiral Jellico... Admiral Hitomi... a pleasure." he said, his voice loud and bursting with confidence and focus, as he gave both men a strong handshake.

"Captain." both Admirals said, in unison, nodding.

"So, Henry... what is this news you have for us?" Jellico asked.

Wright nodded, facing both Admirals, as he positioned his arms behind his back, standing straight.

"Yes... well, as you know, the Brunhilde has been out near the Frendi Zendarren Sector, mapping the Vunelli Quasar. Anyway, we were close enough to another Federation ship, to detect a signal from one of it's automated buoys. We intercepted the buoy. It was from the Titan. What we found was very interesting." he said, as he indicated to the main viewscreen in OPS. "May I, gentlemen?" he asked, as Jellico nodded his approval. Wright tapped his communicator. "Wright to Brunhilde... transmit Titan buoy logs to Distant Star OPS viewer." he said.

As all eyes turned to the viewer, the screen came to life with the image of Voyager, as weapons from Titan shot out at the ship. Seconds later, the deflector pulse from Voyager became visible, as the vortex sprang to life, and began expanding, as Voyager entered it. Seconds later, the vortex filled the screen, as Titan also, entered the anomaly. The screen then became static, and then turned off, leaving only smooth black glass.

"The Starship Titan encountered Voyager, and followed her into the anomaly. According to the buoy's sensor records, Titan detected Voyager, using a tachyon detection web that it deployed. Voyager passed through it, like a fly crashing into a spider's web... Captain Riker then obviously engaged Voyager." Wright stated.

The two Admirals shared looks of concern. They knew Riker would not take any action that would endanger the timeline, but if he was going to stop Voyager, he would have to act very fast.

"Admirals... the bouy contained the exact phase variance and pulse frequencies for activating the anomaly... I believe we can adjust our own deflectors to re-create the phenomenon." Wright added.

Admiral Hitomi began pacing a bit, as the men looked at him. Finally, he faced Jellico.

"How soon until Emissary is ready?" he asked.

"One hour, Sir." Jellico quickly replied.

"Sir... the Brunhilde stands ready to join the task force... we're more than ready, Sir." Wright said to Hitomi.

Hitomi nodded.

"Very well... in two hours, we will leave for the last known position of the Titan, and see if we can locate Janeway and Riker." he said, a look of slight concern on his face, as he looked back to the main screen.

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS - DELTA QUADRANT

Admiral Kathryn Janeway shifted position slightly, in the sofa inside her old Ready-Room, as Captain Janeway allowed a slight sly smile to creep to the surface of her lips.

"For all you know... I could be a member of Species 8-4-7-2 in disguise." the Admiral stated. "Have your people examine my shuttle. Tell them to take a close look at the weapons systems and armor technology. In the meantime, the Doctor can confirm my identity." she said.

U.S.S. TITAN - LUNA-CLASS - DELTA QUADRANT

The ship held position in space.

On the Bridge, Captain Riker paced, one hand sliding along the brushed aluminum railing behind and above the Command area. He cocked his head to one side, as he glanced towards the OPS station.

"Report?" he asked.

"Sir... no changes from last report... as far as we can tell, Voyager is still under cloak. Our long-range sensors are tracking the Voyager native to this time, at coordinates one-five-one, mark two-three-zero. The ship is traveling at a velocity of full impulse power. We are reading a Starfleet shuttle as well... with a quantum-date signature that is approximately three years ahead of when we left our own time." The female Ensign stated.

"The original Admiral Janeway." Riker said to himself softly. "That shuttle is in Voyager's bay?" he asked.

"Yes, Captain, it is." she replied.

Riker nodded, as he leaned with both hands on the railing, as he looked at the main viewscreen, his eyes wearing a look of intense thought.

In space, the Titan maintained position.

"Captain's Log, U.S.S. Titan, William T. Riker commanding. For over five hours, we've been tracking the movements of the original Starship Voyager, on long-range sensors. We have avoided moving in any closer, so as not to be detected, and to avoid any chance of polluting the timeline. For now, we wait. We wait for our Admiral Janeway to make her move. But I find myself wondering... what is her strategy? For five hours, she's had the opportunity to make her move on Voyager, and stop her former self. Yet she remains under cloak. What's she waiting for? I suspect we'll find out soon enough... but will we have time to react, before she can alter history?"

STARBASE DS-25 - DISTANT STAR - THE PERIMETER SECTOR

In the OPS Center, all heads snapped to attention, as the call came in, through the intercom.

"Admiral Jellico... Captain Jansen informs us that all upgrades to the Emissary are now complete... he's standing ready to join the task force, Sir." the man stated.

Jellico smiled, as he looked to Admiral Hitomi.

"Admiral... I think it's time you got your fleet together, and did some hunting." he said, as Hitomi nodded, making his way out of the OPS Center, as he tapped his communicator.

"This is Admiral Hitomi, to all ships... prepare to move out... I repeat... we're preparing to move out. Assume position, and set course for the last known position of the Starship Titan." he said.

UNEFRI TORDAN SYSTEM - PERIMETER REGION

Multiple flashes of light heralded the arrival of Admiral Hitomi's task force, as the seven starships slammed out of high warp, and came streaking to a slow impulse glide.

U.S.S. BRUNHILDE - GALAXY-CLASS

On the Bridge, Captain Wright and Admiral Hitomi stood up, moving towards the main viewscreen, which showed the space in front of the ships, along with some new arrivals...

In the distant foreground, three small ships were holding position... ships that looked like elongated crystalline diamonds... Tholian ships.

"Sir, Commander Thoress is standing by on subspace... he says his ships stand ready to open the anomaly for us, on your order." the female Ensign at the OPS station said.

Admiral Hitomi nodded.

"Signal the Tholians that we're ready to move in." he began, as he tapped his communicator. "This is Admiral Hitomi, on the Brunhilde, to all ships. We're moving in. All ships go to yellow alert. As soon as we're in the past, begin scanning for the Titan." he said.

In space, the three Tholian ships scurried into their new positions, and quickly fired off bright orange beams, which joined together, between the three ships, and then shot out one single beam, into an area of open space.

After a few seconds, the vortex sprang to life, quickly expanding in size, until it was large enough for the Federation ships to begin entering it.

As the Tholian ships maintained the vortex, the Starfleet ships went through, one by one, led by the mighty Brunhilde, and followed by the Emissary, Insignia, Rutan, Excelsior-C, Rocketman, and Nightshade.

U.S.S. TITAN - LUNA-CLASS

Captain William Riker exited the turbolift, as he strode onto the Bridge, looking to the viewscreen, as he made his way to the Captain's chair.

"What've we got?" he asked, as he sat down.

"Sir, a chronospatial vortex is forming directly in front of us... the energy signature is Tholian... identical to Distant Star's artificial wormhole system, Sir." the OPS Ensign relayed.

"Sir... reading multiple energy signatures coming through the anomaly... Starfleet!" the Tactical Officer called out.

In space, the vortex expanded, as the task force began emerging from it, one ship at a time.

U.S.S. BRUNHILDE - GALAXY-CLASS

On the Bridge, the image of the Titan filled the viewscreen.

Admiral Hitomi tapped his communicator.

"This is Admiral Hitomi to Titan... we have intercepted your buoy, and have analyzed the information on it. We have arrived to assist you in locating Voyager, and bringing Admiral Janeway home." he stated.

In space, the entire group of Starfleet ships held position in space.

U.S.S. TITAN - LUNA-CLASS

In the Conference Room, Captain Riker gave his presentation to the Admiral and the Captains assembled, as they all looked to a large wall monitor, which displayed a large sector map.

"As you can see, the Voyager native to this time frame is now here... coordinates two-seven-zero, by five-three-mark-four... approximately five million kilometers from the Borg's transwarp hub, and command plexus." Riker stated, pointing to the indicator of Voyager, as he looked to the group.

"Where is Admiral Janeway's Voyager now?" Captain Jansen asked.

Riker cocked his head to one side, as he tried to explain.

"We have lost contact with Admiral Janeway's Voyager... she obviously has activated her stealth technology, and remains under cloak. Under normal circumstances, we could easily find her again, by re-deploying our tachyon detection grid, but... as you know, since we're here now, there's a risk that the Voyager of this time will detect our grid, and become aware of our presence." Riker said.

Captain Wright spoke up.

"If the Admiral is going to act, it will be before Voyager can make it through that transwarp aperture... I would venture that she's probably already inside that nebula... lying in wait for her past self to arrive. I suggest our first course of action should be to make our way to that nebula... maintain a distance just outside of Voyager's sensor range, until we can make contact with the Admiral." he stated.

The group regarded his words, as Jansen stroked his chin, thinking about something, as he turned to face Admiral Hitomi.

"Admiral... if I may... I think I may have an idea that would allow our ships to actually maintain a close distance to Voyager, without being detected." he offered, awaiting the Admiral's reply.

U.S.S. TITAN - LUNA-CLASS

In the Conference Room, all eyes turned to Jansen, as Admiral Hitomi nodded his approval.

"Yes, go ahead, Captain... what is your idea?" he asked.

"Well, Sir." Jansen began. "En route back to Distant Star, I studied the log entries of the Voyager encounter with Admiral Janeway, and the transwarp hub. Captain Janeway reported that the nebula in which the hub is hidden was incredibly dense... so thick, in fact, that nearby Borg ships were not even detected, until they were almost colliding with Voyager. The only way Voyager knew they were there, was by reading the tritanium signature of their hulls." he stated. "My idea is this... we have our engineers recalibrate the deflector shields on all our ships to emit a false tritanium signature, to fool any sensors that our ships are Borg ships. As long as we hold position in the interior of the nebula, we'll avoid visual detection, and even if we ARE seen by Admiral Janeway's Voyager... we will be able to engage her inside the nebula, so that Captain Janeway will not notice our presence." he said.

Everyone exchanged looks, as they contemplated the idea. Finally, Riker broke the silence.

"I think it has a good chance of working." he offered.

"I agree." Captain Wright added.

"Then it's settled." Admiral Hitomi said. "Everyone... instruct your engineering departments to make the modifications. As soon as all ships are ready, we'll proceed to the nebula, maximum warp." he said.

BORG COMMAND PLEXUS & TRANSWARP HUB

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS

The door to the Shuttlebay opened, as Admiral Janeway's shuttle made its exit. As soon as the small craft cleared the ship, it engaged its cloaking device, becoming invisible, as it made its way towards the massive Borg Command Plexus complex.

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS

On the Bridge, Admiral Janeway watched the shuttle containing her future self cloak, as it disappeared from view.

"Computer... prepare to disengage cloak... standby phasers and transphasic torpedoes." she stated, as she began pressing some buttons on her console. "Set course for these coordinates, full impulse." she instructed, looking to the screen with total determination in her eyes.

As the Admiral kept glancing to the viewscreen, while entering data into her panel, the entire ship was rocked hard, by a weapons hit. Seconds later, another impact followed.

The next time Admiral Janeway looked to the viewscreen, she was greeted by the image of an armor-clad Galaxy-Class ship, barreling right towards her, determined.

"Computer, evasive maneuvers! Prepare to alter course!" she shouted.

U.S.S. BRUNHILDE - GALAXY-CLASS

On the Bridge, Captain Wright looked at the main viewscreen, as he watched Voyager sharply shoot upwards, and alter course, racing for the interior of the hyper-dense nebula.

"Good! It's working... she's running to the nebula! Our fleet will engage her there!" he stated.

As Captain Wright began walking back to his command chair, he was interrupted by a call from his OPS Officer.

"Sir! The Voyager... the original Voyager... it's beginning to make its run for the transwarp hub... but something's wrong..." the Ensign stated, as he attempted to make sense of his readings, as he frantically worked his panel.

"What's wrong?" Wright asked, anxious.

"Captain... the Admiral's Voyager... she's initiated an inhibitor pulse... Captain Janeway's Voyager will not be able to maintain it's trip through the transwarp conduit!" the OPS Ensign cried out.

PROJECT PATHFINDER - CONTROL CENTER

The silent data monitoring station suddenly came to life, as a massive bluish-green energy vortex erupted to life on the screen, as instantly, sensor alarms began sounding.

Admiral Paris walked to the monitor, along with some technicians, and Mister Barclay, who was heading the Pathfinder Project. They all looked at the sight with awe and confusion.

"What the hell is it?" Admiral Paris asked.

"A transwarp aperture!" Barclay began. "It's less than a light-year from Earth."

"How many Borg vessels?" asked another Starfleet Admiral.

"We can't get a clear reading, but the graviton emissions are off the scale!" Barclay responded.

"I want every ship in range to converge on those coordinates... now!" Admiral Paris ordered, as his assistant acknowledged the order, and moved off to carry it out.

"Sir!" Barclay called out. "The aperture... it's beginning to destabilize!" he said.

BORG COMMAND PLEXUS & TRANSWARP HUB

Inside the nebula, Voyager was moving fast, trying to evade the onslaught of weapons fire from the Federation fleet that was pursuing it. As Voyager flew through the nebula, volleys of torpedoes and phaser beams chased the ship.

U.S.S. EMISSARY - MERCURY-CLASS

Captain Jansen watched his ship fire another volley at Voyager, as his ship gave chase. He was interrupted by his Tactical Officer.

"Sir... the transwarp conduit that Voyager entered is beginning to destabilize... the Admiral's pulse must have triggered some sort of cascade reaction... if the conduit collapses, Voyager will either come out of it far from Earth, or be destroyed altogether." he stated.

That was all Jansen needed to hear. He tapped the buttons on his chair console, and activated the comm system.

"This is Captain Gabriel Jansen, on the Emissary... Starships Titan, Insignia, and Excelsior-C... alter course to position two-one-one, mark three-seven... we have to stabilize that conduit!" he ordered.

Inside the nebula, the Emissary led the other three ships out, as the fleet raced towards the position of the conduit that Captain Janeway's Voyager entered. Upon arriving near the gate, the four ships drifted into position.

U.S.S. BRUNHILDE - GALAXY-CLASS

On the Bridge, Admiral Hitomi looked on, as another volley of weapons from the ship impacted with Voyager.

"Admiral... Voyager's hull integrity is down to twenty percent... the vessel will be destroyed with our next volley." the Tactical Officer informed.

Hitomi shared a grim look with Captain Wright... this was a dark day for Starfleet, but the next order was clear...

U.S.S. VOYAGER - INTREPID-CLASS

Captain Janeway stared intently forward, looking at the energy vortex of the transwarp conduit they were in.

"Captain..." Seven of Nine began. "I do not understand how... but the conduit's energy matrix is beginning to slowly stabilize." she stated.

Janeway merely blinked, and then looked to Ensign Paris.

"Mister Paris... prepare to alter course." she stated.

BORG COMMAND PLEXUS & TRANSWARP HUB

The small fleet led by Emissary held formation at the gate of the conduit, as each ship was emitting a thin orange beam into each corner of the gate structure.

... AND NOW, THE CONCLUSION...

U.S.S. EMISSARY - MERCURY-CLASS

Captain Jansen and the rest of the Bridge crew looked to the main viewscreen, watching the small fleet maintain the stabilization pulse on the entrance to the transwarp conduit.

"It's times like these that I thank God for the Tholians." Jansen stated, looking to Commander Unari, who cracked a small smile.

Suddenly, the ship was rocked hard, and the Tactical Officer alerted Jansen to what was wrong.

"Sir... we've got company... three Borg Cubes, Sir... firing on us, and the other three ships." he stated.

"We're not breaking our hold on this conduit!" Jansen shot back. "If I recall, the original Admiral Janeway only shared the technology for the transphasic torpedoes, in regards to weapons..." he thought aloud.

"Correct, Sir." Unari replied, as he looked to her, breaking a smile.

"By now the Borg Queen has adapted to those weapons... but our fleet has the chronometric torpedoes." Jansen said, as he turned to address his Tactical Officer. "Mister Greer, target the lead Cube, and prepare to fire a spread of chronometric torpedoes!" he called out, as he tapped the comm button on his chair. "This is Captain Jansen, on the Emissary, to fleet... ready chronometric torpedoes, and target the nearest Borg vessel to you... we're going to fire on all three Cubes in unison, to prevent adaptation. Fire on my mark!" he said.

A signal bleeped on the Tactical console, and Mister Greer relayed the data to the Captain.

"The fleet's responding, Sir... they're standing by for your order." he said.

"Jansen to fleet... FIRE!" he called out.

In space, the three Cubes advanced, as all at once, all four Federation ships spat out dozens of chronometric torpedoes at the three Cubes.

Upon impact, all three Cubes exploded outward, bursting with fire and debris, which was shot out in all directions into space... the Borg Cubes never had a chance.

BORG COMMAND PLEXUS & TRANSWARP HUB

Inside the nebula, Voyager continued to flee from Admiral Hitomi's task force.

U.S.S. BRUNHILDE - GALAXY-CLASS

On the Bridge, Admiral Hitomi and Captain Wright regarded the sight of Voyager running. Admiral Hitomi wore a grim look on his face, as he gave the next order...

"Tactical... fire the last volley of quantum torpedoes." he said.

"Aye, Admiral... torpedoes away." the man replied, as on the viewscreen, the image of five quantum torpedoes shooting out towards Voyager was seen.

"Goodbye, Admiral." Hitomi said softly, as he lowered his head in respect.

In space, the Brunhilde's torpedoes raced towards the aft section of Voyager, and slammed into the ship, shoving the ship off course, as Voyager began to reel out of control, as numerous internal explosions worked their way across the ship, as the warp lights began flickering.

The task force ships broke formation, as they swept over the dying Voyager, heading out of the nebula.

Voyager's hull finally gave in to the massive series of internal explosions, and the entire ship blew apart, in a massive explosion, that spread fire and debris throughout the nebula.

On the Bridge, Captain Jansen was alerted to some new readings from the OPS Officer.

"Captain... good news! Captain Janeway's Voyager is nearing the exit to the conduit!" she said, with relief.

THE ALPHA QUADRANT - SECTOR ZERO-ZERO-ONE

The Borg Sphere came racing out of the transwarp aperture, as instantly, Admiral Paris's task force opened full fire on the approaching Borg threat.

Suddenly, without warning, the Sphere began to slow, and after a second, the entire Borg ship exploded, blowing apart into millions of tiny fragments.

PROJECT PATHFINDER - CONTROL CENTER

The Pathfinder team watched in shock, as the sight of the exploding Sphere filled the monitor.

"Cease fire!" ordered Admiral Paris.

THE ALPHA QUADRANT - SECTOR ZERO-ZERO-ONE

Out of the fire and debris of the exploding Sphere, shot out the U.S.S. Voyager, as the ship triumphantly zoomed towards a waiting wall of Federation starships... towards home.

BORG COMMAND PLEXUS & TRANSWARP HUB

Inside the Borg Queen's chamber, a dying Admiral Janeway looked upon the fallen Borg Queen... the once-mighty leader of the galaxy's most terrifying threat, now reduced to nothing more than a torso on the floor, frozen in a position of desperation, as the Queen had tried in vain to transmit her last orders to the Sphere that had been following Voyager.

U.S.S. EMISSARY - MERCURY-CLASS

On the Bridge, the call came in from Admiral Hitomi.

"This is Admiral Hitomi, to all ships... let's finish off this Borg complex, and get the hell back home!" he stated.

In space, the task force flew into formation, flying to the Borg Command Plexus, and as each ship flew past the massive complex, each ship let loose with phasers and chronometric torpedoes at the structure.

As the fleet left the massive Borg complex behind, the entire complex began to crumble and explode, until finally, the series of cascade explosions engulfed the entire Command Plexus, and the whole complex exploded outwards in a mammoth explosion.

TWO DAYS LATER

U.S.S. EMISSARY - MERCURY-CLASS

The ship sailed through space at impulse power.

"Captain's Log, U.S.S. Emissary, Captain Gabriel Jansen. It's over... Admiral Hitomi's task force was successful in stopping our Admiral Janeway from altering the future... or present, and reviving the threat of the Borg Collective. However, I find myself contemplating the motives behind Admiral Janeway's actions, and I must ask myself... did we do the right thing?"

Captain Jansen sat in his chair in his Ready-Room, facing the single window, staring quietly out into space, lost in the sight of the millions of stars outside. He was so deep in thought, that he did not hear his door chime, until the third ring.

"Come in." he said, as he turned to face the door, as Commander Unari walked in.

"Captain... are you okay?" she asked. "You have not been on the Bridge very much today... is everything all right? Anything you'd like to share?" she asked him, as she sat down across from him.

Jansen leaned back in his chair, as he replied.

"I was just thinking about why Janeway did what she did, and what we did... Janeway wanted to bring back the Borg, because she felt that her future self had committed an act of genocide. Indeed, I would guess that it can be construed in that way." Jansen began. "So by the same token... since our reality was created by her future self's actions, we had to stop her from destroying our timeline... but that meant that we... Starfleet officers... Federation citizens, had to ENSURE that an act of genocide took place. What does that make us? What does that say about the Federation?" he asked.

Unari just looked at her Captain, sympathetically, and shrugged slightly.

"I really don't know." she said softly. "But I do know that if we had not done what we did, the Borg may have tried to invade the Federation again... they would have remained a threat. In this case, the Prime Directive hit a loophole... in order to not interfere, we kind of had to... and unfortunately, that meant making sure that a race was destroyed, for the good of preserving an entire universe's timeline." she said.

Jansen just silently nodded, as he slowly again turned in his chair to face the drifting stars outside his window.

- THE END -

Nice! You may want to put the actual title of your fic into the title of the thread, while you can still edit it, so they can list it properly in the poll.

Thanks! Yeah, I didn't think about that... IDK if I can change the thread title, but if a Mod would be kind enough to make the change, I'd appreciate it. :)

Not bad, although it was hard to follow. Might just be me though, but it jumped around a lot.

While I can understand with Janeway's and Jansen's worries and feeling of guilt, I think that the Borg were a threat not only to the Federation, but countless other planets and species in the DQ and beyond. The Federation saved them all from that threat (IF the Borg were indeed completely destroyed and I am not so sure of that) and conscience of a few officers might be a small price to pay.

but on the same token, the Dominion was a threat to the alpha and beta quadrant, and had much of the gamma quadrant under their thumbs too. Yet killing the founders with a virus, whipping them out entirely, was considered wrong. Different enemy, but I think the concepts are similar enough.

Although I do agree. I don't think the borg are completely gone. I could see a massive shift in the way the borg operate though, who knows if it'd be for better or worse.

You can still try to talk to the Founders. They weren't automatons, but "evil" people (I'd rather say they were terrified of others-in many cases their fear was justified--that they were attacking as an attack is the best defence), someone with free will. The Borg were not. I know in Voyager they co-operated with Janeway, but it was because they wanted something she had, not because it was possible to negotiate with them. If not the weapon against Species 8472, the Borg wouldn't negotiate with Janeway but attempt to assimilate the Voyager at once.

If we compare genocide of Borg with the Jem'Hadar, then there are more similarities. The Jem'Hadar were as "programmed" as the Borg and they listened to their Founders just like drones listened to their Queen.

Yes and no. There were instances where the Jem'Hadar were shone to question the founders and the vorta. And even the Vorta seem capable of it. The Borg have no choice in the matter.

However, at the same time, the Borg have been shown to be able to regain their individuality and free will. 7 of 9 for example, Hugh, the other children, the colony that Chakotay found. The group of borg that followed Hugh. So killing all those drones is, or could be argued I think, mass murder. These people were basically enslaved and brainwashed. They had no control over what they were forced to do, and their only crime was to fall victim to assimilation. So is it right for us to kill them all? Just unplug them as it were, without even trying to find a way to help them?

I'm sure many people feel it was right for Janeway to do what she did, but even still I think it's obvious that there are a lot of moral dilemma's involved here.

Of course there are. This surely isn't black & white matter. Right or wrong. This or that. There are lots of shades of grey and there is no one "correct answer". This is more like choosing lesser evil and even though it would be the "lesser" one, it still would be evil in many aspects.

But in case of Borg, leniency could turn against the Federation (and others). Who do you choose to protect: your own family or nameless mechanical drones? You know that those drones used to have names and they were forced into this role, but sometimes you have to choose something...and live with its consequences.

Well, I'm glad my little yarn is finally generating some debate, lol... that's what it was intended to do.

See, this is why I chose to open the whole story with the Holodeck log playback from the TNG episode... to show that even in a time of peace, when we were not at war with the Dominion for our very lives, Starfleet WAS thinking genocide, essentially, as Admiral Nechayev's words reveal.

So what did that say about us (the UFP)? Janeway did what she did in this story because she was simply feeling remorseful... but here we had a level-headed Starfleet Admiral, in calm times, calling for a mission to effectively exterminate a whole species. Who was more in the wrong... someone giving an order like that, without remorse, or a Captain who basically did the same thing to get her crew home to safety, and ended up feeling remorse later on?

And then, as Captain Jansen ponders at the end... what does this mean for the integrity of the Prime Directive? Since its inception, the Prime Directive has been meant to protect and exalt the sanctity of life, yet here, during this mission, the Prime Directive basically demanded that Jansen and his people ENSURE that a mission of genocide takes place, or else their timeline would cease to be. In this case, the Prime Directive was both incredibly perverted in its logic, yet also adhered to its very essence.

I found this convoluted story to be very exciting. I was on the edge of my seat. You handled the back and forth perfectly, giving us an interesting and ambiguous tale.

^

Thank you very much, Mistral! Yeah, I really tried hard to give this story the "feel" and pacing of an actual episode.

A fascinating tale, with a dark, tragic end...but I have a minor problem:

If Future Janeway is dead when the Future Voyager is destroyed...does that mean there will be no Admiral Janeway to go back in time for the events of "Endgame"?

Other than that, very action-packed, with a lot happening in it. My compliments.

I wish we could have seen more of Future Janeway in the end, as she meets her end, though--some reaction from her, perhaps her final thoughts....

"My advice in making sense of temporal paradoxes is simple: Don't even try..." ~ Captain Kathryn Janeway

Sorry, couldn't resist. It's a good quote, and far to perfect a fit for the subject.
