NOT the Charlie X Antares (yet again)

Excuse me if this has been asked before. Do you create your art in Illustrator? What technique do you use to create that official-looking Trek shading and texture on your ship?

Please point me in the right direction if a FAQ or tutorial exists.

Everything I do, including the comic book stuff is done with Pain Shop Pro X.
As for as technique goes, it's just experience really, no trick to it beyond making sure you research your colours and details properly, choosing the right weight to your lines so the image holds together nicely. I wouldn't say this design has a texture, it's just bare gradients, with the odd transparency.
