"Not programmed for you..."

When I watched this episode for the first time as a pre-teen I wondered why Christine was so angry with Kirby over Andrea. I thought maybe she was there to do the housework or something.

Now I wonder why Christine wasn't angrier. And why Kirby didn't hide Andrea away.

She's apparently the last manufactured Korby android. Possibly her clothing is to better the study of his new simulated goosebumps algorithm.

Well, Evil Kirk was the last manufactured Korby android. And he got a full jumpsuit, so clearly they hadn't run out of cloth. (Well, unless he was wearing Brown's spare jumpsuit, since Brown didn't need it anymore...)

That's Korby. If he'd been named Kirby, the androids would've had much squarer fingers. And would've probably come in boxes. ;)

I wasn't talking of a physical need but a mental one for Korby was an android who believed he was still human but later on he acted more like a machine than a man!
So I don't think that he had sex with Andrea not because his mechanical body couldn't but more that his desires had been changed!

But had they? The androids seemed capable of emotion despite Korby's claims. Andrea apparently killed the Kirk android because he snubbed her, and hell hath no fury etc. She also seemed to express love for Korby at the end. And Ruk was capable of hatred and rage. The point of the episode, pretty much, was that the androids were ultimately just as flawed and emotional as humans, that they weren't the superior beings Korby believed they were.

Yes you're right! I'd forgotten about Ruk and even Andrea's blasting Kirk for the snub!
JB

That was the equation! Existence! Survival must cancel out programming.

That's one of my favorite scenes in the whole series. Ted Cassidy was great. I love Kirk's expression as Ruk grabs him.

That expression was probably a very genuine reaction to Ted Cassidy grabbing him really hard.

I always believed Andrea was there specifically as entertainment for Korby.

There's no other way I can see to explain her wardrobe.

I've been over all the photographic evidence very closely (there are hundreds of frames), and I think "Andrea" might be designed with certain access panels that blend into the skin. These might be somewhat like the one on Mister Norman's belly, only smaller and hotter.

Thus the exposed upper body enables easy access to her circuitry and data ports.

It's pure practicality.

Is this one of the scripts GR worked on during his marathon rewrite sessions? That would explain a lot. Roger Korby = Gene Roddenberry, trying to convince Christine/Majel that those other women were nothing more than sex robots. :guffaw:

Remember, until 1969, Roddenberry was still married to Eileen Rexroat. At the time, Barrett was the "other woman." (Well, the main one.)

There are just too many ways to read that wrong...or right.

By that point he'd probably long since stopped trying to convince Eileen of anything.
