Not Part of the Milky Way Galaxy?

Computer

Captain
Today I learned of a theory that Earths solar system is infact not a part of the Milky-Way Galaxy but is infact a product of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy which over the past 2 Billion years has been merging with the larger Milk-Way.

According to these studies/theories our solar system will finally merge with the Milky-Way galactic plain in 2012 also lending credit to the speculation on why the Mayan calender ends in 2012 since it is based on the placement of certain stars which will no longer hold the same placement.

Has anyone else ever heard of this? It kind of makes the discarding of Pluto seem kinda insignificant.

I'd like to see your link. I suspect it is in error. There is a Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy, and it is being torn apart by our Galaxy, but there's no reason to suppose that Sol was once part of it, nor is there any way to make a statement like "the solar system will finally merge with the Galactic Plane in 2012". It's not like the Milky Way is a perfectly flat record (CD for younger folks) with a little DING when the solar system gets perfectly aligned.

The tie in with Mayan superstition is fairly typical nonsense for this kind of story, sort of like when planetary "alignments" are predicted which will cause massive tidal waves, sterility, and a Democratic victory in the Senate.

Pluto hasn't been discarded. It has been (properly) reclassified.

The Sag Dwarf Galaxy is something like 50000 ly away, so I don't see how we could be a part of it. You should you heard correctly?

I had not heard of that before, but it appears to be a hoax and our solar system does not belong to the Sagittarius Dwarf galaxy. You can read the debunking at BadAstronomy.com and the original news release (that was misused by the hoaxers) at the Virginia Tech website.

In any case, galaxy collisions are something that take millions of years, if not more, so to say that the final merger will take place as specifically as 2012 is a bit wacky.

The original story appears to be here among other places. You can read how these changes are causing global warming, the doubling of Jupiter's magnetic field, the growth of a "natrium" atmosphere on the moon, and "A Change in the Quality of Interplanetary Space Towards an Increase in Its Interplanetary and Solar-Planetary Transmitting Properties."

We might still be from another galaxy, the original star that created the elements of our solar system and then exploded may have been from another galaxy, but that would have been billions of years ago and it would be very hard to track down the consumed galaxy over that time span.

Billions of years ago merger, maybe likey, millions of years ago merger, not so much so.

I've read that the Milky Way is extremely old, among the first galaxies formed. There's a good chance the components of our star came from local supernovae.

I read about the hoax but in all honesty when I did a search for more information I couldn't tell what was hoax, people screaming blasphemy and actual facts.

I dont really have an opinion on the matter simply because I havent looked at any non biased data.

I was just raising the topic I had read for further discussion and to see if anyone else had even heard about this because today was the first I had heard anything about it.

Our Galaxy is at the centre of the universe and out solar system will reach the exact centre in 2012.

Trust me guys, its no hoax, its true, I kid you not!! :vulcan:
