Northeastern US storms!!

I know we have quite a few members who live in the northeastern US, and there were some pretty wild storms over the weekend, especially Saturday.

Did everyone come through okay?

My mother, stepfather, and half-brother were here for a visit. It was pissing down rain so going to the city was out of the question. We went to the Palisades Center up in New York instead. On the way back, I kept seeing these flashes. They didn't strobe like lightning, and they came in green, blue, and violet. Last time I saw those was during the ice storm in Indiana, in early 2005: it's a sign of transformers blowing up and power lines being brought down.

We headed back to my town, and found part of the road closed off. A utility pole was actually on fire. Surrounding blocks were without power, including several traffic lights. Many people are still without power this morning.

I drove in to work this morning and found the parking lot partially flooded. The Passaic River runs right beside the building. We're hoping it doesn't come up any farther, or this building is going to flood.

There are trees and limbs down everywhere. Saw lots of wrecked cars, too. No less than eight emergency vehicles drove past me this morning, lights flashing and sirens blaring.

And I thought winters here were bad!

Sounds nasty. Luckily, it has only been wet in D.C., nothing too bad.

BTW, I had to do a double-take on your newly acquired green-ness.

I live in southern NH and I can't say it was all that bad. It's been raining from saturday night up until now, with some bad wind every once in a while but so far it's just been misting to light rain. The gusts are like 10 minutes apart and last for maybe 5-10 seconds. It must've worn itself out before getting to us.

Ooh, speaking of DC, has there been any bad flooding from all the snow melting?

Nothing that I've seen/heard. Actually saw a pretty big snow mound in Fairfax over the weekend, but most of it is already gone.

This is what the parking lot at my job looked like when I got in this morning:

It has gotten worse since then, and is not anywhere near crest.

This is the view from upstairs, and this side of the building does not face the river:

I think they're going to evacuate us at some point before the parking lot becomes impassable!

The storm was just slightly too bad in Virginia for me to get in some time flying in actual instrument conditions. Low ceilings a few hundred above feet above approach minimums would have been perfect for practicing instrument approaches.

I was going to go up with my instructor on Saturday, but we decided not to when we saw the "Low Level Wind Shear Potential" note on the turbulence AIRMET.

A planned visual flight on Sunday had to be cancelled, of course, but I couldn't even go up on instruments with my instructor that day due to an icing AIRMET and several icing PIREPs from large iron.

Oh well, at least I got some time in the Redbird simulator.

The storms were pretty bad here in Brooklyn. About a block away from me a tree that looks like its been around for almost a hundred years is now lying on its side in front of three houses.

Just gray and gloomy here in Schenectady, though the Mohawk River is prone to flooding, as well as the parking lot here at the college, so we have to keep an eye on those.

Out here on Laaaan Gisland we had some pretty intense winds and thunderstorms. My area seems to be okay but I understand other towns got some damage and some still have their power out.

The wind is really starting to pick up here. I suspect there'll be a lot of empty garbage cans rolling around the streets pretty soon.

I worked all weekend, and had very little sense of the outside world. To me, it was just a rainy weekend. No flooding, damage or issues.

Yeah, here on Lawngeyeland in Suffolk we have lots of big old trees down. We had lots of big bad wind (shades of "THe Happening") but not too bad as far as rain. We lost some pieces of siding...luckily we didn't lose power. We stayed in and watched lots of MST. Had fun!

 ^ Oh yes. Watching the sun and clock are fun!

But in case you didn't know what i meant by MST, It's Mystery Science Theatre.
