Non Trekker/Trekkie reaction

I really wanted input on this in the official trailer thread, but there's too much discussion there. About sombreros, as usual. :techman:

This movie's success will be largely based on it's impact on Joe Six Pack and other theatergoers. Of course we can count on a majority of the existing Trek fanbase, who post here.

I would very much like to hear some input if you've shown the trailer to your non-Trek friends, family. One dude posted in another thread that he showed it to three co-workers and they all thought it looked terrible. I think that's quite surprising. Someone jokingly replied that maybe some of them secretly thought it looked good, and didn't want to admit it. That's interesting too.

I just showed my wife, who hates Star Trek, she can barely tolerate Star Wars and falls asleep instantly whenever either are on. She saw the trailer 5 minutes ago.

Unsolicited input: "It looks like Star Wars."

Did she want to see it? "Yes."

I knew this would come up ..so... - I did a guest lecture to @220 under graduate (management) students this morning and I integrated the new trailer into it (it was a lecture on innovation and other related stuff).

By my rough count - about 80-85% of those students indicated (by their hands) that the trailer made them interested in seeing the film.

One person screamed "muther fuckers the Enterprise was built in space!" but he was quickly tasered to the ground.

"Don't tase me bro!!!!" :guffaw:

I've only had two such reactions so far. One is with my gf, who, while is a big movie fan, isn't a Trek fan at all, she just has an awareness of it. She thought the trailer looked really exciting. She said that visually it was very different than what she had expected when I told her it was a Star Trek film.

My other friend is definitely not a Trek fan, and has for years told me how Star Trek bores the hell out of him. When he saw the trailer he said "Wow, I may even want to see this!"

There's my small sampling. :)

Well it's certainly visually different - people have got used to 50 year old men standing around on small scale sets in their PJs.

So why does she want to see it? Those statements don't seem to mesh.

Yeah, true nuff.
She said Spock "looks cute". :vulcan::rommie:
She was willing to sit through the Original SW Trilogy, but couldn't stay awake for any of the prequels. She finds TOS amusing, but has no attention span for modern Trek, and usually sprints from the room the moment she hears Voyager or DS9's opening theme coming from the speakers.

I'm really interested in stuff like JoeZhang's experimenting... just showing the trailer to people and seeing how many people get some kind of a vibe from it. Hey, did you tell them the trailer was for Star Trek before the viewing???

It might be kind of neat to simply say, "watch this!"

Well, this friend of mine who's not a trekkie and not much into sci-fi either told me it looked "less weird" than usual. I don't know what's weird about Trek usually, so I just said "uh-uh". I was pretty surprised he'd seen it though, that impresses me much more than the fact he apparently found it likable.

Most non trekkie responses have been pretty good. My wife is not a fan of Star Trek, but she wanted to see it just because Simon Pegg is in it. She saw the trailer at the new BOND movie and was pretty impressed. She will be going to see it. She did not go see the last Trek movie with me.

Wife and daughter we're both pretty 'meh' about it. People at work (three) rolled their eyes and walked away.

Well, I notice that several of the reviews coming in at places like AICN and others concerning the 25 minute previews being shown are from non-Trek fans (who are getting some of the details a little wrong in summary, BTW, which will kick off fifteen new topics here this afternoon with people going "WAH!").

Anyway, these non-trekkie journalist types mostly seem to love what they see.

My girlfriend thought it was awesome, and she isn't really a Trek fan. I have showed it to several friends about 5 or so, and the reaction has been from "cool" to "wow that looks really amazing".

My best friend and his girlfriend are not Trek fans, but both loved the trailer and he asked if theres a midnight showing. I said; "Of course, it's Star Trek dude!" Just to you know... stretch the hype a bit lol.

Neither thought it looked like Star Wars in the slightest and he's a big Star Wars fan.

Oh and I know this is for people who aren't Trek fans, but the input of my father who is 44 and Trek fan since he was a kid was "Whoa that looks cool".

Im going to show some of my friends at work today to see what they say. Also my brother, which is a huge tng fan. Ill post their reaction later.

looking at other boards, not specifically devoted to Trek, the response tends to positive.

safe assumption it gets the hardest time here. :vulcan:

Well, i showed the trailer to a buddy of mine, who would laughf everytime i talked Trek to him,he likes action movies a lot but thinks Star Trek is dumb,he said "Thats Epic" and "Ohh, JJ does it again",he loves Lost :) .
And another positive reaction i got from my Dad,who said he would definatelly go and see this. He's not a movie fan in general, so i was suprised. :)

My wife and I saw the "TV Spot 1" trailer in HD last night while watching TSCC on FoxHD. I thought it looked really good on the 46"LCD in high-def. My wife thought "well, that looks pretty cool" and she "tollerates" my Trek stuff.
