non-TREK fan needs

We keep hearing that this movie is aimed at getting new legions of fans, which I totally agree with 100%. So, with that in mind, what is it, in Paramount-JJ's eyes, are the so call 'no-nos' in making this film. In essense, what did past movies do wrong? What do they think non-TREK fans are looking for when they see a movie?

My own answer? They (regular people) could hardly care-a-less about the 'inside' stuff that we do. For example; kirk boffing uhura? I don't think 99% of the world would have a problem with it, heck I wouldn't, but its clear that some trek fans do. Nor do I think regular fans really care or not if the Romulans met humans or not before the events of this movie, though, most TREK fans do.

And do regular people really care or not if Chekov met Khan in a previous episode? No..all they care about is if it is a fun movie.

Some of us on this site love to sweat the small stuff, which is cool. But when making a movie for the masses, this kind of 'narrow' vision can not be used or you get a really good movie, but no one goes to see it. (i.e FIREFLY)

I think the very first movie, The Motion Picture, was good in character development, special effects and the plot wasn't too bad but it got bogged down in the mud and was boring.

One good thing about the first movie was that it felt like a grand scale movie. The rest of the films lost that feeling of being a "major motion picture" and became nothing more than long episodes on the big screen. I think this movie has the feel of a "major motion picture."

Many of the movies appealed to it's fan base and although there is nothing wrong with that it does play into the law of diminishing returns. What I mean is many movies franchisees and musical stars will attract huge audiences and fans at first. But after a while the casual fans will move on to something else leaving a core fan base. But that core fan base is generally limited which is why you will often see record sales and box office receipts dwindle as time moves on.

I believe this movie has the potential of capturing a larger audience at first instead of being something that is just appealing to the core fan base.

Non-fans will be looking for an action-based movie with great effects and some humor. They'll also be looking for an indication that even though this a Trek movie, it requires very little to no prior knowledge to enjoy it.

Trek needs to evolve and reinvent itself. It needs new fans. I doubt the new generation of teens will watch a 40 year old show. Heck, I'm 22 and I don't like TOS at all. What's left? TNG and DS9; forget Enterprise, and Voyager, let's just say that I hate technobabble with a passion. TNG and DS9 are the only ones which might have a chance of attracting new fans, and it is a small one. We need a new movie wich is fun, awe inspiring and smart. It needs to do good at the box office so that sequels and new TV series are made.

I say ban the technobabble (or at least severely tone it down), extra dimensional crap, and time travel. They are a waste of time, since in the end everyting resets itself. It gives you a false sense of danger. Kill a character, oh no problem, we'll just borrow the one from the alternate universe, or destroy te time machine/ship/device and everything that happened in the last hour didn't really happen. Bullshit. I skip episodes like this.

Second, get some writers that actually get laid. Most of the "sexy" scenes are embarassing to say the least. All characters act like they're in grade 5 when it comes to sex; what, don't people fu#$ in the future, or do they wait till they get married? Either get it right or don't do it at all.

I just want a movie that's fun and doesn't have huge plot holes like Nemesis did. Why was Picard so eager to re-assemble B-4 anyway? Did he not remember what happened when they did that with Lore?

Also, as a 22-year Trek veteran, I am not the least bit concerned with Kirk playing 'Hide the Salami' with Uhura. I'm a little curious about what Zoe Saldana is like in the sack myself. I'll bet she's a real Hellcat!

Wouldn't bother me either. I'm still curious as to why people seem to think this will happen.

No fat 40 - 60 year old men as the stars.

With all the young 'kids' in this, as well as Nimoy, I wonder what the median age of the cast is as compared to GENERATIONS or TMP?
