[Non-Trek Fan Film] Batman: Dead End Documentary

Came across BEHIND THE MASK: THE BATMAN DEAD END STORY on Hulu. Pretty interesting doc about a passionate professional, Sandy Collora, who sank his own money to make an amazing short Batman fan film, BATMAN: DEAD END. His goal: to do something eye catching to further his career.

The fan film was made in the days before crowdfunding.

The doc touches a bit on the issues of using someone else's IP, especially when it comes to Collora's attempts to cast a certain movie star to play Batman and another for Joker. Also touches on a bit of ego and lack of humility. And how things can get to someone's head.

Seemed somehow appropriate in light of all the goings on with a certain troubled production.

Check it out here: http://www.hulu.com/watch/816119

Here's the fan film, which features Walter Koenig's late son, Andrew, as the Joker:

I remember this premiering at San Diego Comic Con in 2003 and was floored.

Sandy Collora's a talented guy. I was disappointed when the Kickstarter for his latest fell short. Hopefully he tries again and nails it.

I've seen the documentary, it's pretty interesting, if possibly a bit overlong. Likewise, I was disappointed that Collora's turtle-monster movie didn't make its Kickstarter goal (I didn't even know about it until it had closed) -- on the other hand, he seems to do very well with his Art of Creature and Character Design books -- Vol. 3 was just successfully Kickstarted. Did anybody actually get the BTM Kickstarter DVD? I was wondering if Dead End was included as an 'extra.' It still has never been released in any kind of proper HD format.

I met Collora at a con about a decade ago, before he made Hunter Prey, just as the B: DE hoopla was kind of dying out. He was very pleasant and nice to fans, at least that I saw. I hope he gets to make his turtle-monster flick, as I'd pay to see it. :)

I remember seeing that online and was just blown away, chills when the rose up with the cape. But it jsut goes to show you there is always a need to be balance between hungry, humble and confident.

Oh I remember that film. Nicely photographed fanwank. I was bored by it because it was just too everything and the kitchen sink for me. I'd be interested in seeing the doco, however.

To each his own, I love Dead End. It's a great bat-suit, and it's just so goofy, when both Predator and Alien show up, not to mention the late Andrew/Josh Koenig's off-the-rails Joker performance. I didn't find it boring in the least, and at about eight minutes, it hardly overstays its welcome. Collora's World's Finest fake-trailer was pretty cool too.
