Suppose the events of TWOK never happened and someone, as Spock said, did "return to that world in a hundred years and to learn what crop has sprung from the seed you planted today." What could TNG have done for a follow-up on "Space Seed"?
This is a cool idea. You could maybe pair this with your thread about Star Trek II having a different villain from TOS, which frees Khan up for different follow-up. Let's say something like TNG came along I could see them at least considering bringing back Khan or at least what became of his crew as intellectual and physical foes for Picard. If not then, and DS9 came around, those guys would have loved to have brought back Khan. I agree with "The Masterpiece Society" comparison but maybe with shades of the action of "The Hunted," at least for TNG. Considering what DS9 did to the Mirror Universe, maybe those guys would have gone down a more dark route.

Make it like something from the Shatnerverse novels. Some improbable happenstance brings the remaining gang back together: Ambassador Spock, along with retired Admiral McCoy who happens to be on vacation, and Scotty warping in out of nowhere on the shuttlecraft Goddard, and of course Kirk who was revived by Romulans and Borg. Who else from TOS is still alive in those books?
