But would Abrams want to risk overshadowing Fringe by pulling a Trek XI surprise out of his hat? Fringe arguably needs the showcase more...
Yeah, I imagine FOX would really support that. 
I'll be in there for one of the Fringe screenings. I might also look at the Dealers Hall, at the Paramount booth.

critics have started to pay attention to comic com. it wasnt just fan boy who noticed iron man after last years.
not having any footage could start rumors that they are not happy with the quality ect.

why not slip in a little something they are working on for another paramount production.

XI's nonpresence would be a lot more worrisome if the movie were still scheduled for Christmas.
As is, Paramount execs must think there's nothing completed enough to have the "WOW!" factor they'd like it to have before they show footage.
But what I don't understand is why they wouldn't at least have still photos of sets or the cast. Don't show everything under the kimono, but just enough to tantalize. Given the nature of the project, those alone would create a lot of buzz. Are we to believe not one publicity shot has been done, yet? If not released now, then when?

The Marketing Materials are likely to be at the Paramount booth at Comic-Con.
I suspect that there may be a couple of things revealed, perhaps a Cast-in-uniform picture, or a still or two of the new Enterprise.

Honestly, I've never really heard or paid attention to Comic Con until I started following this movie. The buzz it generated for the Iron Man movie was a good thing, but I doubt it affected the outcome that much. I saw Iron Man because of the good reviews, not because of Comic Con. I just find it a bit hard to believe that not having anything about the new Trek movie would be that damaging in long term, especially since it's still a ways from release.
Perhaps not, but it is definately something that will be remembered in some quarters.
Comic-Con 2007 had over 140,000 attendees, and gets a lot of attention from the Web-based press.
When it comes to Comic-Book, Science Fiction or Fantasy TV and Movies, Comic-Con is perhaps one of the biggest events in the world.
As one example as to how important it is to genre and fandom of many kinds, companies making collectibles and toys often create items specifically for Comic-Con, as Comic-Con exclusive items.
There is a good reason that Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy were revealed at that event with the writers and producers in a big splash of fanfare last year, and that Iron Man gained so much from it.
Comic-Con 2008 is officially sold out now. They stopped selling tickets yesterday and closed down registration. We'll just have to wait and see what happens next week regarding Star Trek's non-presence.
Comic Con in my opinion is defeniately an important modern marketing tool to reach out to fans with your product whatever it may be. That is why it sells out and why there are so many exclusives and panels, the fact that Paramount has chosen not to have a panel there this year is something of a concern. It would have been a perfect opportunity to at least show case the cast...have them in a Q and A (with restrictions on what they can answer of course) maybe reveal a second teaser trailer if not the first full trailer. There was the news article on Trek Today that said JJ was disapointed that there was no Trek panel there so I doubt he would be worried it would overshadow Fringe. There are mulitiple marketing tools you could employ without having to show anything from the movie. To have no presence there though...I dunno. I know that its eleven months away but still there's interest and you should take advantege of that as early as possible...
