No swearing in public in Preston Great Britain

80 pounds or $130 is pretty steep for saying, "fuckin ya." This sort of thing would never fly in the US since our first amendment protects such speech. I have to wonder how much the police are enforcing this ban?

Swearing on the streets has been banned by a council in an effort to reduce antisocial behaviour in the run-up to Christmas.
Anyone caught uttering offensive language could be handed an on-the-spot fine of £80.

The regulation has been imposed by Preston City Council to try to curb drunk and disorderly behaviour in its town centre during the party season.
Revellers will be reminded of the ban with posters and banners with slogans such as 'No Effin & Jeffin' and 'No Aggro', which are being put up in the area.
Officials are also clamping down on other forms of anti-social behaviour such as vomiting and urinating in the street.
One poster depicts a person being sick with the slogan 'No Pavement Pizza', while another reads 'Don't pee anti-social'.

I thought that it was just good manners and common sense to not swear overtly in public?

It is... All because you're English doesn't mean you know how to speak English, a fairly common misunderstanding you see, most of my country have soo much wasted potential.

I'm thinking Local Council, and also 'never in London.' :)

I hate to tell this local city council but swearing has become a very 'social' thing to do. In what decade or century was swearing in public completely anti-social?

edited to add: "run up to Christmas." It's fucking [wink] June.

Sounds like a calculated move by the local authority to swell the coffers, to me.

Obscure and confusing parking regulations have been much more effective to do that - especially here in Atlanta.

No swearing in pubic in Preston Great Britain.
XD

It's an odd rule to me, but I don't particularly enjoy being around people screaming profanity... so maybe if they whispered it so the cops couldn't hear...

 That was a dumb ass mistake on my part. Fixed.

At sporting events and at bars - I dunno where you live - but it's common place.

I have to wonder if swearing in public is a real public problem in GB?

I think it's more to do with using it in a threating behaviour, besides I think you could already be areasted for it any UK Police officers on here might be able to correct me. But wouldn't swearing in a threating or abusive manner come under section 5 of the a Public order offense.

You are quite correct, this is not a new law, it is a decision to enforce one already on the books. It applies to harassment and threatening behaviour, not general swearing.

This reminds me--a couple of times now, I've been having breakfast in my local diner, and there's this guy--I swear, every other word out of his mouth is "fuck."

Fuck this. Fuck that. Fuck the other thing. I'm trying to enjoy my breakfast, and read my book, and I'm being bombarded with fuckfuckfuck.

But aside from swearing constantly, he's not being loud or disruptive. And I do enjoy a good swear, myself. So I haven't said anything, either to him or the wait staff.

Still, I'm surprised at how much it bothers me, having to listen to that. It really pollutes the atmosphere.

I wonder who gets to design the no swearing sticker/sign? :)

My friend of a friend actually designed a Recycling Thing commissioned by the Council here. - I wonder if Preston is looking? - I wouldn't mind designing something like that for Preston. :)

Attempting to legislate other people's good or bad manners I think is destined to fail.

Here in the Atlanta GA recently for example, a community tried to ban public breast feeding and you should have seen the women's groups that howled at that notion. Personally watching a woman breast feed her kid would make me lose my lunch faster than profanity - but that's me.
