No Space: 1999 Forum?

Still one of the best theme tunes ever (they knew how to do theme tunes in the 60s and 70s), the Eagle is still one of the coolest ships ever. It is a shame that Bain and Landau didn't put a bit more warmth into their characters, but they're still very good. Hasn't quite retained the love I had for it in my youth (unlike TOS and B7) but its still good, in hindsight though I think I prefer UFO now.

Oh and kudos for giving us Alan Carter ace Eagle pilot! He was always my favourite character.

the story goes that Carter was only going to be a minor, possible one appearance character but then they decided to keep him around.

Way too much scientific analysis going on in this thread. ;) It was a cool premise that makes zero sense in reality, so it's best just to hum to yourself over the parts of any story that discuss how the Moon got where it is that week (or when Helena's log actually goes back in time between the first and second episodes of a two-part story) and just be impressed by the Eagles, which are still among the most realistic-looking fictional spacecraft ever created.

Incidentally, I'm going to show my age here by remembering that as far as I know, the first sighting of season 2 in the UK wasn't the airing of an actual episode, but a goof clip shown on (possibly the first) It'll Be Alright On The Night - even as a kid, I was nitpicking because I recognised the Alpha set and the stun gun immediately, but didn't understand why the uniforms were 'wrong' or who the woman with the weird eyebrows was...

Alan Carter is one of my favourite sf characters, so yes, kudos for that, I agree.

:wtf: Wow, I'm glad they changed their minds. I wish that the Tony Cellini backstory had been Carter's backstory instead. In my mind I think that I've re-written it so that it is, except Carter survives.

For season 2, Fred Freiberger wanted to get rid of Carter as well as Bergman and Morrow, and apparently the script for 'The Metamorph' was written with a new guy instead of Alan, but fortunately someone saw sense and he came back. Good job, too - Carter was by far the most likeable character in the show.

It's an absolutely bizarre show at times - occasionally the plot just jumps to something totally unexpected or terribly explained. Part of its charm though, I guess. I do like it.

For UK viewers, there are episodes available on the ITV Player. It's regularly shown on ITV4.

Maybe this is the redux Space Opera that SyFy should do...call it Space 2099 or something of course, and, for God's sake, let's just do something to help us suspend belief...I dunno, maybe Alpha base is host to the Bergman Project...a space warp/warp drive sort of device that is using nuclear waste for fuel...something goes awry, the device is activated...it's too "hot' to shut down, and, there you go...instant moon warping through space. Every so often it slows to sublight speeds, and we get to see it as it passes through alien systems.

I can see all kinds of plot arcs out of this: Some aliens band together (the Sidon group from Season 1) to do in Alpha and set about chasing it because it poses a danger to it's planets...when it passes through a member star system, the gravitational forces disrupt life on a major planet, so they set off to do them all in. Redo The War Games at the end of Season 1 with Sidon finally catching up with them and having a big face off.

Of course Testament of Arkadia and Black Sun should be remade...these were waaay excellent. I'd thread the metaphysical stuff all through the series.

Let Bergman go nuts eventually to pave the way for Maya

Bring in Maya and Psychon at a later point say Season 3...

Finish the series with the moon about to enter the gulf between galaxies as the device finally begins to deteriorate...how will Alpha ever survive? Set up the last season's arc along those lines, which is where they seemed to me to be headed (if I recall...but I was in, like 2nd grade) at the end of Year 2.
