No North American Miracle Day DVD/BD till 2012

This just in from TV Shows on DVD.com: According to the blog at the BBC America online shop, 2 Entertain/BBC Video won't be releasing the Region 1 version of Torchwood: Miracle Day on DVD/Blu-ray till 2012. :(

I guess the synching of Region 1 and Region 2 releases only applies to Doctor Who. (According to multiple sources including Amazon.co.uk the Region 2/UK version of the series release is expected out in November, around the same time Part 2 of Doctor Who series 6 is due out on DVD/BD.)

This announcement touches on a few things. First, there was some talk that because Miracle Day is being done by Starz that meant another company would be releasing the DVD over here. That appears not to be the case (otherwise the BBC would have said "don't ask us"). It might also suggest that Starz has certain rights tied up over here that preclude a quick DVD release; my assumption is they've got a second run planned. Worst case scenario would be if they're planning to hold release until Season 5, assuming Season 5 airs in 2012. There's precedent in that as BBC Video has over the last few years waited until the new seasons of Sarah Jane Adventures were about to air before releasing the previous season.

So the folks in the UK who are griping over the delayed broadcast can at least be satisfied that they'll have the DVD long before we do. ;)

Or perhaps they're holding back the DVD Release in order for BBC America to air it? Many have suspected that BBC America would be airing it at some point.
 
Well Gods Of The Arena isn't out until September even though the series finished in February, so long gaps for Starz aren't unusual.
 
it seems starz puts there dvds out a few month's after the show or series or whatever is done. where as hbo and showtime we have to wait a hole year. and miracle day just started so yeah I can see a 2012 release no problem with that.


now my question is, is the children of earth out on blu ray yet?

I had speculated such a thing, I just couldn't imagine Starz investing so much in a property they didn't have more of a stake in. Children of Earth got pretty good buzz so maybe they're banking on that for Miracle Day.

It proves that the BBC retain full ownership of Torchwood (the end credits show that episodes are copyrighted to "BBC Worldwide, Limited") and that the BBC has simply licensed U.S. broadcast and video-on-demand rights including the world premiere rights of episodes to Starz, and part of that agreement also seems to prevent BBC Worldwide from releasing home video products of the series in the U.S. when they normally would, in order to protect Starz investment and provide an incentive for people to subscribe to Starz.
 
I don't mind waiting for 2012. In fact, since I have seasons 1, 2, and Children of Earth on my Christmas list (yes, I make a Christmas list this early) this will make sure I have everything else before I get Miracle Day on DVD.

No kidding. It's the one reason I still don't own Doctor Who.

A normal 20-some episode season for a show is usually in the $30-40 range. Doctor Who is usually double the cost for half the number of episodes. I just saw Series 5 the other day at Best Buy...it was still $75.

See, I had pre-ordered Series 5 for around $50, and that was high.

Almost $4 per episode as opposed to maybe $1.50 - $2 per episode for an American series, even a newly released one.

So much for the price coming down. Are the earlier DW series' closer to reasonable now?

Same here. I watched the first episode via other means, but I'm gonna wait until next year to watch the rest of the episodes of Torchwood for the being. Unless, the ABC get to screen it later in the year (after payTV UKTV channel screens it)
 
The early DW can be picked up for around a £10 for each story, the newer DW the Eccleston, Tennant era can be picked up around £20 for each season.
