No new episodes of SPN or Smallville tonight

Not in the lower 48. Apparently they will be airing in Canada. In spite of the CW network sending out advance screeners of tonight's new episode of Supernatural (the episode was enthusiastically praised) and the return of a beloved character to Smallville--both are being preempted nationwide tonight.

The CW is going to repeat the new episodes of Vampire Diaries and Nikita which aired last night. The decision was made yesterday. Since Idol aired last night, the network wants more people to "be able to sample" the two newer shows (the quote from CW's press release). New episodes of SPN and SV that were scheduled for tonight are now slated to air February 4.

Final ratings for last night's new episodes per Travis Yanan at pifeedback.com. V-Diaries took a small dip. Nikita was its usual pathetic self. It's not as if Idol is going to go away. I don't know what the network is thinking other than it cares about promoting the newer shows and doesn't care about the older ones. Nothing's going to save Nikita, so the SPN fan that is me is pissed. :scream: Whatever. Some people think the real reason is a rumored storyline in SV's newest episode that parallels unfortunate recent real life events.

The Vampire Diaries
- 3.330 million viewers
- 2.0/3 HH
- 1.6/4 A18-49
- 1.8/5 A18-34
- 2.3/7 W18-34

Nikita
- 2.619 million viewers
- 1.6/3 HH
- 1.1/3 A18-49
- 1.0/3 A18-34
- 1.3/3 W18-34

Unbelievable. Maybe they think people will watch since they're snowed in. Supernatural's fans managed to get the show on to the cover of TV Guide for the first time via vote just a few weeks ago. They beat out Chuck. Are they going to move the newer V-Diaries to Fridays? Obviously not. Dumb, dumb, dumb move. Casual viewers aren't going to know what's going on.

We assumed in the smallville thread that it has something to do with the Arizona shootings. Especially since Smallville's plot had a similar event. They're postphoning them out of respect.

What this delay could do to SPN and Smallville

http://www.spoilertv.com/2011/01/supernatural-and-smallville-what-delay.html

Loss Of Promotional Money And Validity: For over a month, the CW has been airing promos with the January 28th return date of Smallville and Supernatural. It's stuck in the minds of regular viewers and non-viewers alike. Everyone knew the date, it was marked down in calendars, the countdown had begun. Now, the network has flushed that budget down the drain because it was inaccurate. They have lost trust in their promotions since they have proven to be untrue. Viewers will now be left wondering if future promotional dates will be changed at the last minute, too.

Loss Of Buzz Lead-Up: The network had sent out screeners of the new episodes earlier this week to reviewers. In doing so, they got early buzz from the industry about how great these episodes would be and how the countdown to return had begun. Additionally, this got fans excited and the new episodes were anxiously awaited. Now, none of that buzz can be maintained. Promotional articles are a week too early, the buzz will die down, and the reminder of a return will be marred by the memory of why fans are getting their new episodes a week later than usual.

Loss Of Viewers: While it is true that devoted fans of Smallville and Supernatural, while voicing their extreme displeasure over the delay, will likely tune in next week, that's not going to be necessarily true for everyone. Some viewers may be fed up with the way they have been treated and simply tune out, going to another network to get their entertainment. Additionally, casual viewers who had seen the dated promotional ads and were planning on tuning in are going to be in for a surprise. They will not know of the change, so instead of finding a new show they might have watched, they change the channel and never come back.

I'm laughing at the ridiculousness of that article. The episodes are postphoned a freaking week. How is a week going to hurt these shows which are in their twilight years in the first place? Arguably Supernatural should have finished up last season, I've watched like two or three episodes of it this year and haven't bothered with it. Smallville fans have already been dicked around with for ten freaking years.

I completely agree! it's a show and it's a week. Yes it's a very stupid move, but thsi is the CW we are talknig about.

Smallville fans have put up with shit for several years, a week delay will get them to skip the show? Please!

And non viewers? Who cares about non viewers! How many people do you think are going to go "I have never seen any Smallville the last 9.5 years... Ill think I'll watch this episode". Not a single soul!

Are they really that stupid?..I mean in the wprds of Chris Berman and the guys from NFL Countdown...."C'MON MAN!!!!!"
Oh well. gives me another chance to watch The Dark Knight ...on another channel no less.
If I was interested in TVD or Nikita I would have watched them!! Why in the name of HELL do you want tp piss us off even more?!?!?

Just to add to my rant. Smallville is in it's final season. It's not like it will be canceled due to lower ratings. People will be frustrated and leave due to other things...like for instance being a crap show...not because it was postphoned a week.

pissed about smallville not so much on spn but that is do to me being new to it and, I've been getting cuaght up on it via tnt reruns. right now half way through season 2 love so far can''t belive they killed of meg like that even if she is a deamon possed hotty . now for smallville i am realy f@#king :guffaw::scream::scream::scream:pissed love that show. erica durance is a goddess like smg.

Joshua has come a long way since his Pacey days.

That's a matter of opinion. I just didn't warm to the characters on Fringe. It happens. No, I'm not going to die if I have to wait a week (and I agree that the shooting storyline on SV may be the true reason) but the CW doesn't have much going for it. SPN gives it stable ratings for a Friday night. Nikita isn't going to grow an audience. It tanked from the beginning. I was on record as being very against a sixth season of Supernatural, but I've been very pleasantly surprised. These characters are allowed to change because of what happened to them, and not always in pleasant ways. The characters are it for me. Dean and Sam are not bland Clark, stuck in perpetual boyhood. Their characters were allowed to become grown men. Pair that with the beloved 60 year old Bobby and the CW's youth demo police must be in an eternally quizzical state.

Its funny I have watched maybe ten episodes of Dawson's Creek in my life, and I hated Joshua Jackson character (at least in those episodes I saw) more then any of the rest of the cast. Just hated his dialogue. And to this day I have a hard time not seeing Pacey in his work.
