Small Rant:

What is it with the new trek films, why cant this films stand on their own. why the hell must they do some homages to the past. its annoying and cliche.

TOS Kirk is dead. Generations is proof of that. TOS spock is perhaps on new vulcan helping the Vulcan survivors how the heck will we see TOS Kirk and Spock again in space ships going on missions.

they are old men ....no wait, one is even dead and he can not also be alive because humans have a shorter life span. TOS Spock judging from the first film is more than 129 years old. humans do not leave up to that.

it is bad enough tht they did an entire remake of wrath of khan with star trek into darkness now they want another tribute and homage to the old films that will be way to obvious.

NO PLEASE!

This new films need to stand on their own and stop relying on the past. Look at Nolan's Batman films, they are all his. its time trek goes down that root. All new, bold and fresh.

I am beginning to doubt Orci now as a director and writer, he relies too much on the past and the old films and cast. why else is he bringing Shatner back. to help the criritcal reception or the box office?

Just write a darm good original script with our excellent talented cast and all will be well.

enough with the homages ..its chessy and annoying.

There are many people in Trek who have lived long life spans. Not just Spock (or his dad before him.) McCoy lived into the TNG era, Sulu was rumored to be around in the TNG era still. Others.

I haven't read anywhere that suggests Old Kirk and Old Spock will be "on missions" together. For all we know it could simply be a matter of reusing the idea that was originally in the first script, of a pre-recorded message from Kirk.

While I agree that I think the new films need to be a little braver and show us more of the Star Trek world of this new universe, now that it has all be refreshed, i'm not against having Kirk and Spock in there. It is, after all, the 50th.

Just like Doctor Who and James Bond gave us pretty solid anniversary celebrations, I hope that Trek can too. The franchise deserve that. Of course one of the best ways to do an anniversary celebration is to tell a great story first, and have homages of any sort come a distant second. :)

DR WHO was a TV series. they had enough time. trek 3 is a film with a brand new cast. small cameos of the old cast yes but a major story for them. NO NO NO NO NO NO.

I don't mind ones that are subtle - I loved the red shirt gag in STID, for the simple reason that it could be plausible within Starfleet that redshirts have the lowest life expectancy - my girlfriend didn't notice it. Scotty's 'shhh' blending into the door noise was great too.

The reactor scenes and the yell I could have done without though.

We cannot throw anyone or anything out of the airlock until AFTER the 50th.

Homages are going to happen, especially with Trek XIII being released for the 50th. It would be better if they were more subtle about it. The two Abrams movies so far have been guilt of lifting dialogue from other Trek episodes and movies (most notable TWOK) and depositing them in the movies with no context or relevance, just "hey memorable line, yay for nostalgia" which came to a head in STID when they actually remade an entire scene from TWOK.

This is not the start of a discussion thread. It is a blog entry. You know quite well where those are supposed to go.
