If Gary Mitchell never existed, Star Trek would be exactly the same. The events in WNMHGB had no effect on the rest of Star Trek on-screen history.

Even Mitchell's revelations about Kirk -- that Kirk was a tough instructor and very studious -- never came to light again in the series, and did nothing to define Kirk's character as we came to know him.

Totally agree, but in "Shore Leave" McCoy mentions to Kirk something like he was a walking stack of books. I think that's the only other time it came up.

I guess the movie retconned Gary Mitchell out of existence. Remember in Where No Man Has Gone Before it was explained Mitchell was Kirk's best friend at the academy. Now it seems that role has been taken by McCoy.

I think this movie did a real disservice to the subtleties of the Trek universe.

This movie tossed cannon out the airlock.

For all we know, Gary Mitchell might have been there. But why would we see him in this film? Yeah, I know, they knew each other in the Academy but this film is not about that. If they want to add new members of the crew in the next film, they could bring him aboard and just say he's a friend of Kirk and McCoy from the Academy.

BTW, that other photoshop of Finnigen was hysterical.
