No Edward Norton for The Avengers

Wow. That statement was very unprofessional. Maybe somebody was taking cues from the majority owner of the Cavaliers...

@JacksonArcher: That he was deeply involved with TiH, which was definitely his movie, doesn't necessarily mean that he wasn't a dick behind the scenes. I'm not even saying that I believe that he was; I just know that we can't know. As for the deleted scenes, I think the movie is perfect the way it is. Norton wanted more character stuff, but none of it is really necessary to drive the plot.

The simplest explanation for this is that Bruce Banner is a very small role in Avengers.

If Marvel was unwilling to rewrite the script to make it a more substantial role, I could see Norton on the other hand feeling like he had no interest in what would have basically been a cameo. It's a big cast already, and of course the Hulk is CGI. So you get an unknown to do Banner's twenty lines of dialogue or whatever and spend your money elsewhere.

The dickish statement, while unnecessarily insulting to Norton, does seem to imply something along those lines.

While very far from a deal-breaker, this is a little disappointing.

The unprofessionalism of the Marvel statement aside, the role of Bruce Banner will no doubt be (as others have mentioned) very small in the overall scheme of the movie and not as important to the plot as the the Hulk himself will be. There really isn't much for Norton to work with here.

Personally I don't see losing Norton to be that big a deal. How much screen time should Bruce Banner (not the Hulk) truly get in an Avengers movie? You already have Cap and Iron Man and Thor. The Hulk is just going to be a controlled/manipulated pawn of Loki most likely... Banner as a character really isn't going to enter into it.

^^ One great thing about Norton is just how haunted he looks by default, and that's the perfect look for Banner to have. So in a way, seeing less of Banner could make Norton's departure an even greater loss, if the new actor has to make the most of fewer scenes.

Piss.

It seems the Hulk movie franchise is just cursed. The two Hulk movies disappointed at the boxoffice and the actors that played Banner only did it for one movie. You would think a big green dude smashing stuff would be more popular with the audience.

The Punisher can't seem to find an audience, either. Three movies which mostly failed critically and at the box office.

I am Jack's disappointment.

To hell with it. I mean, making Hulk a major part of the movie. His ass gets beat by Hulkbuster Armor Iron-Man in the pre-credits sequence...no Banner face is show.

Then maybe they get a real villain. Ultron as voiced by Hugo Weaving, because that would be totally Bay.

Yeah as much as I'm disappointed by this news (I wanted an Incredible Hulk 2 as well) I can understand their frame of mind if Hulk is going to be shown more than Banner will be. Meh.

Norton isn't above doing a cameo, considering a very small role he had in a Ridley Scott movie... where you never even saw his face!

This may suck but Feige knows everyone here is going to see The Avengers anyway.

^^ True. What with all the other talent on board, plus the excellent TiH CG model, he's got us by the balls on this one... :sigh:

He also did a small cameo in the Ricky Gervais movie The Invention of Lying.

I really want them to rethink this decision and cast Norton as Banner.

Rhodey getting replaced I can deal with. Especially since I've never really clicked on Terrance Howard... but come on...

TiH was a fantastic adaptation of the character and a sequel should of been a lock.
