Nixon for companion (SPOILERS)

Darth_Daver

Captain
Captain
This is me, starting a campaing for recognizing President Nixon as an official companion.
- He was in more than one episode
- He travelled in the TARDIS more than once, on his on will

And while you are at it so is Delaware! (Also, he's cool)

That is more than any companion from the Tennant specials can say!

Keep the discussion in good spirit please :)

Ricky travelled in the tardis more than once and doesn't have offical companion status, so I say no to this proposal!

I had a only 50/50 chance of getting that right .
Yes, Mickey (not Ricky) travelled in the tardis and never got offical companion status (yet for some reason Adam did).

Uh, I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, but everything I've seen treats Mickey as an official companion from School Reunion to Rise of the Cybermen. I'd be interested in seeing what source you have that says he wasn't. There must be some wonky reference guide out there containing B.S. because someone on a Doctor Who wiki site was posting information that Captain Jack wasn't an official companion, either, yet he most certainly was.

Listing in the opening credits is not a criteria, otherwise no one from 1963 to 1989 would count.

The only revival-era character who should be considered a companion but isn't is Jackie Tyler, since she travelled in the TARDIS and functioned as a companion during the Army of Ghosts/Doomsday 2-parter, giving her as strong as claim as, say, Lady Christina or Jackson Lake.

Richard Nixon, one of the Doctor's companions?

I definitely just threw up in my mouth a little.

Not only did he travel in the Tardis, he did so without the Doctor present in the Tardis at the time.

I want Delaware as a companion. It'd be nice to have someone around for the action again. The first Doctor had Ian, who while he may have been a teacher, did all the heavy lifting in the action department. It'd be nice to have an American as a companion for awhile. And it'd be nice to have someone from a different time period as a companion for awhile. All things the old show did at different times in it's run.

Nowadays I think the odd's of us seeing another Zoe, Jamie, Victoria, Vicki, Leela, etc, are slim to none. I'd like them to start varying up the companions a bit more.

Not Nixon but I definitely want Delaware as a companion. Anything with more Mark Sheppard is always a good thing!

I think that Nixon should be a companion. I mean besides the obvious stain of Watergate, Nixon had some great accomplishments during his presidency. Apollo 11, China, Ending Vietnam, etc.

That's a pretty big "exception."

And he expanded Vietnam before he ended it. Invasion of Cambodia, anyone?

In any event, I don't think Nixon is a true companion just because he took a trip or two in the TARDIS, any more than Dr. Nasreen Chaudhry from "The Hungry Earth"/"Cold Blood" was a companion for having taken a trip in the TARDIS: He didn't actually work for the Doctor.

To me, that's ultimately what makes a companion a companion: They willingly go to work for the Doctor. So, to me, yeah, Mickey's a companion; so's Jackie; so's Astrid and Lady Christina, even though neither of them set foot in the TARDIS. On the other hand, no, I don't think Nixon was a companion. Nor do I think that Adelaide from "The Waters of Mars" was a companion.

^ I agree. I don't think Adelaide is or was meant to be a companion. Mickey is most certainly a companion, as is Jackie and most certainly is the Lady Christina. Not only was Christina a companion but there was definite romantic chemistry between the two of them as well. I'd love to see Michelle Ryan return for an episode or two. Delaware would be an interesting addition as a companion.

Two reasons, the actors name wan't in the title sequence and the frequently quoted statement in the British Media and BBC hype that Martha was the first non-white companion. For that to be true, Mickey has to not count as a companion, but yes he should.

I'm all for it. Imagine all the story possiblities!

And I got to say, Richard Nixon as portrayed by Stuart Milligan was a rather charming guy. I think this is exactly what the future needs: a healthy dose of sixties Republicanism. :rommie::devil:

I think that the OP just wants to recognize Nixon as a companion for this episode...not an ongoing companion, as interesting as that might be.

Yeah, for that, I'd recommend Delaware! As someone earlier said, more Mark Sheppard is always a good thing.

(Is there any cool scifi he hasn't been on? :))

I don't think that means anything in terms of whether or not the actor's character is a companion. Karzan and Abigail, for instance, I'd argue were both companions, but neither Michael Gambon (nor Laurence Belcher, nor Danny Horn, who also played Karzan) nor Katherine Jenkins received main credits billing. And hell, John Simm got second billing for "The End of Time, Parts One and Two," but he certainly wasn't playing a companion! And Peter Davison got second billing for "Time Crash," and he was playing the Doctor. (To be fair, that does open up the question as to whether or not the Doctor can be a companion.)

I think we can reasonably say that Mickey was the first companion, but Martha was the first primary companion (since, let's face it, both Mickey and Jack were secondary companions to Rose).
