What?!?

And on related news Nintendo announced a $50 price drop for thw Wii U...

Practically everyone I know switches off the 3D anyway, so it makes sense. Though I'm not sure about the design.

The only reason this exists is for people that can't afford a 3DS. Am I right?

This system is being released the same day as Pokemon X/Y. They want parents who are scared of the 3D to buy this new system for their Pokemon obsessed kids.

Of course, the 3D isn't recommended for kids, either, so these parents might be right to be wary of the 3D and glad of the option.

I just don't want my kids touching my 3DS with their filthy little meathooks. They can gum up their own device, and if I can do that for $100 less, why not?

So let's see if I have this straight.

+ $40 cheaper.
- Doesn't fold. No protection for the screens and harder to transport.
- No 3D.
- Ugly design.
- Uncomfortable to use (especially the bottom touch screen).
- Mono speakers.

I can understand Nintendo wanting to make a cheaper 3DS for the holidays, but this is what they came up with? Why?

Nintendo can never just make a minor variant of one of their products, apparently. They always have to change everything else along with it!

Yeah, unless the flipping mechanism was a major source of costs, I'm not sure why they decided to go with such a large change.

Please tell me this is a joke. Did they not loose enough money with the 3DS and Wii U they can't wait to throw away even more?

If it doesn't play Gameboy games, it's not a Gameboy, is it?

(At this point one might mention that the 3DS can, in fact, play Gameboy games via the Virtual Console.)

Well, I think the point is that it's Nintendo's handheld console. They don't have Gameboys anymore, they have the DS.

You know what would've been a better use of resources? Making a 3DS emulator for tablets that included a direct connection to their online shop and no 3D ability. Parents these days are giving kids all sorts of tech and tons of people pirate their games, so why not knock out two birds with one stone and make some money on a smart decision for once?

Of course, being a Japanese entertainment company, logic and international profitability is less of a priority than maintaining the "face" of the brand.

Keep in mind that none of us are exactly the target market for this device. It's totally geared towards the younger audience.

So let's see if I have this straight.

Plus for parents when looking at which one of the "3DS family" to buy.

- Doesn't fold. No protection for the screens and harder to transport.
One less moving part for kids to snap off or otherwise break. Though I admittedly don't know how much of an issue this is.

Which they strongly recommend against using for kids under 7 anyways.

- Ugly design.
- Uncomfortable to use (especially the bottom touch screen).
Meh, I'll grant the ugly design. It does look a little weird, but uncomfortable? It looks like it might be difficult to control, but placed side by to side to the existing 3DS versions, it doesn't seem like it would be much different.

- Mono speakers.
On a device this size, does that matter? The two speakers would be right next to each other anyways. It still has stereo if you plug in headphones.

I can understand Nintendo wanting to make a cheaper 3DS for the holidays, but this is what they came up with? Why?
Cheaper to produce, cheaper to sell, geared towards kids. Not really seeing anything wrong with it.

Don't get me wrong, when I get around to buying a 3DS (for A Link Between Worlds), it's not going to be this version. But I'm not the target for this version.
