Nimoy wanted to be in the TNG movies?

Old story from last year, sorry, but I didn't read about it until now.

Nimoy tells the Los Angeles Times, "Bill and I have spent some time together, we have dinner periodically, and frankly, it’s a subject that we avoid. It’s not a fun subject right now. And I sympathize with him (Shatner) because I was left out of the Next Generation films. It is what it is."

"In the Next Generation movies, I did not appear and Kirk was killed. It was as though someone was trying to create a dividing line between the original, classic series and the New Generation crew. I was out and Bill was dead. I assumed that was it, it’s over. I didn’t feel great about it, but I was OK with it. I’ve had my run, and I had a lot of other interesting things I wanted to do. I didn’t look back."

As much as I love the guy, why would he be in the Next Generation movies? It's sci-fi, so any scenario would be possible, but did he actually expect to be asked to join them after Generations (since he turned down a role in that film)?

I thought he'd be happy to leave the films on a high with TUC. Well, until XI came along of course

The reason he turned down GEN was that there wasn't anything "definitively Spock" in what was written for him, it was all standard technobabble. When he and De turned it down, Moore and Braga were forced to re-write so as to make their absence less obvious.

If they would have come along with a TNG film that involved Spock, Romulus and Vulcan and followed up on "Unification", he probably would have done it.

i agree, TNG needed to take a leap away from TOS, and that can't be done with Spock clinging to its sleeve. but i can see how LN might feel about being left out, as Spock is arguably the most iconic role of Trek (perhaps tied with Kirk). but he did get his due in "Unification".

I thought he turned it down because there was no real meaning for him or De to be in that movie for those brief scenes.

That would have been interesting.

That's what I meant. There was an interview with him asking why he turned it down and he said something to the effect of "Those lines could have been spoken by any character", which to me means there was nothing really "Spock-like" about the role. Then another in interview with Moore and Braga they explain that it didn't feel right to have "The entire original cast minus one, that it would have just drawn attention to that absence", so they scaled it down and re-wrote it to justify having only Kirk, Scotty and Chekov.

Yes, it would have been far more interesting if the powers that be had gone down the Romulan/Unification path.

Given the set-up of Generations, I've sometimes wished that the TNG portion of the film had been able to integrate either Spock or Scotty into the narrative. That might've been interesting; to not have Scotty on the Enterprise-B, but he's around on the Enterprise-D.

On the other hand, that might've been a bit fanwanky.

I seem to recall an interview where Nimoy felt that he could have had a role in Nemesis. Certainly, the film's premise would have lended itself to an appearance by Ambassador Spock.

It would have brought in box office money, for one.

I think it would have been an interesting idea. Perhaps Spock could have been on the Enterprise-B, from where Kirk entered the Nexus.

I think Leonard doesn't really know how lucky he was that he wasn't in those films. Killing Kirk was just plain wrong, I mean, you can go ahead and make the TNG movies without using anyone from the older series and it wouldn't have affected the quality of them at all. But I think at the time Berman wanted to make a break from the Roddenberry Star Trek and felt the only way to do it was to kill Kirk. Which, in my opinion, represented Roddenberry.

An incredibly stupid move. Killing Kirk pissed off all of us old time fans, those of us who have been pumping support and money into the franchise from the beginning.

Had B&B firmly gotten their claws into Spock I think they would've destroyed the character. They never understood how the TOS characters worked in my opinion.

But I do understand Leonard's disappointment. He does love the series and all it stands for and it must hurt not to be involved with something you've contributed so much too.

I don't know if any one else notice this but me, how come there were no Vulcan's in the next generation, the had everyone else but no Vulcan's, back on the subject i always wonder why his was never offer any cameo appearences.

Sarek ("Sarek", "Unification")
Dr Selar ("The Schizoid Man")
Spock himself in "Unification"

or were you referring to the movies?

It would have been interesting to create a original role for Leonard Nimoy, not Spock, someone new and exciting.

Barring that cast Nimoy as Soren, THAT would have been cool.
