Nickname for the movie: Delta

When the teaser came out, I was planning on starting a thread saying it's time to begin calling the movie Star Trek and using the abbreviation ST. But the trailer didn't say Star Trek. It ended with the Star Trek delta symbol instead. Humm. That was also the first graphic we got out the JJ Abrams. While I still think the movie will eventually be called Star Trek, the only thing we've seen so far is the delta.

ST:XI is definitely NOT the name of this movie. Abrams has made that very clear. And if the movie will end up being named Star Trek, that causes problems in separating it from TOS. I think a good nickname for the movie is Delta. It's short and easier to type than ST:XI. I've got to hunt for that one. I can type Delta. Delta is what we've been given. Delta should be the movie's nickname.

Who's with me?

Well, I've often called it Abrams-Trek. That or Trek '08 or Trek XI, suits me fine.

I'm patienty awaiting for less than amicable fans to nickname it 'Sino', (Star Trek In Name Only), so I can make all kinds of odd jokes about the word's common homonym.

I'll call it nuTrek over my desiccated corpse.

Belar, I don't think anything is established right now, which is the problem. Put "nuTrek" in Google and you get nothing.

blaXXer, the beat poet Gary Snyder would agree with you. One of my favoites of his is about people's need to name things and how that gets in the way of experiencing the whole thing.

Foxtail Pine

bark smells like pineapple:
Jeffries cones prick your hand:
Ponderosa nobody knows what they are, saying "needles three to a bunch."
turpentine tin can hangers
high lead riggers
"the true fir cone stands straight, the doug fir cone hangs down."
wild pigs eat acorns in those hills
cascara cutters
tanbark oak bark gatherers
myrtlewood burl bowl-makers
little cedar dolls, baby girl born from the split crotch of a plum daughter of the moon
foxtail pine with a clipped curve-back cluster of tight five-needle bunches
the rough red bark scale and jigsaw pieces sloughed off scattered on the ground.
what am I doing saying "foxtail pine"?
these conifers whose home was ice age tundra, taiga,
they of the naked sperm
do whitebark pine and white pine seem the same?
a sort of tree its leaves are needles like a fox's brush
(I call him fox because he looks that way)
and call this other thing, a foxtail pine.

Why are people obsessing over this kind of stuff? it's a movie, goddamnit.

And this, newb, is an INTERNET FORUM dedicated to said movie.

We can talk about any aspect of the film we please.

If you don't like it, go pester someone else on the Disney boards or some such.

Delta.... I like it.

It can have two meanings, delta would be the stage where the game started with is code, next comes the gamma version, then the beta version, then the alpha version.

Are you saying that he doesn't also have the same right to talk as he pleases (within board rules)? And he's right. Don't get me wrong, I'm as excited about this as much as the next person (likely even more); but seriously, get some perspective, goddamnit.

Superman, please stop harassing n00bs, okay? I let it slide in the windows thread...but this is only my second thread read tonight...and the second one in which you are taking shots at n00bs.

If they are trolls, it will be abundantly clear soon enough. But in the meantime, how 'bout we give 'em the benefit of the doubt? ;)

Thanks.

^^^When I start seeing joke threads closed for people who are "preferred" here, and when I see people who are clearly trolls getting warned, then I'll be more forgiving.

Well, put it this way: If you keep it up, you'll soon be the proud owner of a warning for trolling. :p

Superman, I can assure you, that I am not here to troll or open 'joke threads' (I am quite happy, that this season seems to be off, for the time being and with all the new infos coming in).
And, to be honest, I am quite excited to go see a new Trek-movie this Christmas, but only as excited as the next guy. The thing I can't grasp is how, even a year before it hits theatres, people are obsessing about some really obscure minutiae or if the Shat will be in the movie or aking up names (Trek08 or Trek XI seem to be naming it accurately enough and are already well accepted around here). Hence, my... well, dissatisfaction with this thread.

Well, I think you have to understand that:

a) Not much in the way of information, pictures, etc have been released related to this film; and
b) People are really excited and want to talk about it anyway.

Those two facts, combined with the fact that most Trek fans are...well...a wee bit obsessive/compulsive to begin with sorta makes for exactly what we have here.

If you plan on hanging around here, I would expect more of the same if I was you. You may as well get used to it. ;)

Ah, but the trailer was kind enough to make the title official.

Took the liberty of some screencapping:

Where that leaves us as far as a nickname or abbreviation, I don't know. Personally, typing Star Trek isn't that big a deal for me, and the italics make it pretty specific what I'm talking about.
