I hear some arguments claiming that TMP was somehow in the "true spirit" of Trek because it was heavy in intelligent sci-fi and TWOK wasn't.

I dunno...a lot of TOS's best episodes were great because they were basically human morality tales that were "dressed up" in sci-fi trappings.

For instance, episodes like Balance of Terror, The Devil in the Dark, The Conscience of the King, and Journey to Babel could quite easily be adapted to take place in more modern settings. The sci-fi aspects merely act as backdrops and are quite superfluous to what the episodes are really about...themes such as prejudice, revenge, and family.

Another of the reasons why I consider it a real sequel to TOS is that it feels like a real ship, with a real crew. There's people manning the consoles, Kirk is signing off on reports, there's always something happening.

The later films lacked any scope in this regard.

Yes, both TMP and TWOK, as well as TUC all have that feel. TFF does as well, but to a lesser extent.
