Nicholas Meyer to join writing staff of new series

First film traded on the Trek name but was a fresh take and a fresh story. Into Darkness was just a big fan wank circus.

Don't get me wrong here, I really enjoyed Trek09. But generally, it didn't have as much of an own story as a "best of"-compilation of Trek. There was everything, from the Enterprise' arrival after the battle of Wolf359eeeerVulcan, the Centaurian slug scene, time travel, "Khaaaaaaan errr Spoooooock!!", ejecting warp cores to destroy space wedgies ("I've given y'all she got"), to the point where the same orange laser beam hit the exact same place next to the Golden Gate bridge as in the Enterprise-finale (well, the true finale...)

From Fuller and Meyer I expect nothing less then to keep the spirit of Trek intact (which both of them seem to wholeheartedly understand), and basically re-do everything else from scratch.

That will be a fun mix, though:

Kurtzman: "We need more one-liners in this scene!"

Meyer: "Well, there are still some William Shakespeare quotes left that I haven't already used in Star Trek. Let me look it up for a second..."

Kurtzman: "Yeah, that William Shatnerdude had a lot of memorable quotes."

Meyer: "here, let me see... If you tickle me, shall we not bleed... no, I remember that, to be or not to be, hm, sounds also too familiar, too. Hah! Here! Better a witty fool, then a foolish wit! I think I havent' used that one before!"

Kurtzman: "That's a horrible one-liner. How about we shorten it? Die, you fools! That has a familiar ring to it?"

Meyer: "Hrmpf. Mkay. Whatever."

Kurtzman writing...

Meyer: "Can we have a scene were Uhura has a computer in her front and has to look up that quote in an old, rusty book...?"

This paid service is going to be successful regardless if the Fuller and Meyer's series is good or not. Fan's been waiting for a long time to watch new Trek; they're not going to allow it not to succeed.

Isn't this Old Trek?

I'm not complaining but I was kinda hoping for a fresh, original take on the franchise. New people, new ideas, new direction. Something cutting edge and different.

Two guys who worked on Old Trek seems like going down the road of... more of the same. I'm sure I'm worrying over nothing. I guess the new people that are brought in won't elicit much response. Anyway. Whatever.

Well, I'm stoked. I wasn't super happy when Kurtzman was first announced, but both Fuller and Meyer are both steps in the right direction. Especially as none of these three have worked on Trek together, so you get an all-new mix of styles and opinions informing the direction. Can't wait!

(Now maybe get D.C. Fontana to write an episode or two!)

I'm still not paying for a subscription service with commercials - even for Star Trek. But I'm much more likely to buy the DVDs with Meyer included. But at 70, I have to wonder how much he will contribute and for how long.

Oh, the humanity!

I'm still not paying for a subscription service with commercials - even for Star Trek. But I'm much more likely to buy the DVDs with Meyer included. But at 70, I have to wonder how much he will contribute and for how long.

I'll gladly pay $5.99 a month for new Trek. It is the cost of a meal at a fast food place. Then I'll buy it on Blu-ray. I love Star Trek.

My wife, my kids and Star Trek are the only things I love unconditionally in this world.

Here is the thing though: Fans always wanted to see Spock emotional. Because that is so rare. That's part of his appeal. Meyer understood that. And he put juuuust the right amount of emotion on display. His death scene showed pure dignity. And his deep friendship with Kirk was perfectly, subtly shown. Him getting "angry" over such a big betrayal (of Valeris) was exactly fine.

JJ abrams put nuSpock in full emotional rampage. Twice. He knows what fans wanted to see, and delivered. But Meyer showed the better understanding and judgement of the characters' actions, and thereby kept him more interesting.

Pretty much every Spock centered episode of TOS was about Spock becoming emotional. The writers of TOS understood that was at the core of the character. His battle with his "human half". Fans on the other hand seem more attracted to cold emotionless Spock with the computer like mind. Which works fine when Spock isn't at the core of a story.

And that's what I want to see in the new show: Interesting characters. Envisioned by people, who know how to handle interesting characters. Now let it be NEW characters (as was already promised), and I'm happy 'till no end!

NuSpock's emotional outbursts are notable because they do show us how dangerously passionate Vulcans can be without their restraint. It's just that we've never really seen it so fully displayed before.
