Nicholas Meyer to join writing staff of new series

I simply used TNG to represent... what went before.

I don't think any judgements can be made this early but I genuinely was hoping for a total break with past incarnations of TV Trek. So far, the announcements related to the new show have been extremely Old Trek friendly. I'm sure it'll be fine though.

But, it's possible. In TUC, Spock was pissed off enough to slap a phaser out of his protege's hands, and he committed a full on mindmeld where she was screaming. He's half human, he could have a bad day.

This is extraordinarily good news.

Perhaps this will stop all the foolishness with people claiming that "I'm not going to pay 6.99 for this!!!"

Really dude? Skip the pilgrimage to Burger King once per month and you'll be fine!

Seriously though....this is rather unbelievable. This is the most interesting Star Trek news since TNG was announced.

I'd love to see a show set in the movie era.

Not to turn this into a J. J. Trek bashing thread or anything, but Meyer just gets it:
I tend to agree, but I have to absolutely disagree with the source you quote.

We see Spock physically assaulting persons twice in JJ Films, and we know from the Original Series Spock can and will use his fists in assaulting someone when his mental discipline fails him. We see him assault Kirk, and we see him assault McCoy, it two different episodes of the original series (both during times his emotional control was gone).

In the JJ Films, Spock uses his fists twice and both times are when his mental discipline has utterly failed him. Once not long after experiencing the death of not only his mother, but his entire world, when specifically taunted by Kirk, the other after Kirk dies and not to terribly long after melding with his former Captain (We saw in our world how far Spock would violate Federation and Starlet law over Pike) and experienced death from a human's perspective. And in this case was also taunted but by Khan this time.

Considering that "this" Spock has experienced far worse then prime universe's Spock (at least to the best of our knowledge), I think its absolutely believable to the character.

Good word of mouth is great to promote a new series. This is very similar to Disney announcing Lawrence Kasden to write TFA. Nick Meyer's TWOK is considered the best Trek film ever made. This news definitely will get the die hard fans to pay up the doe for this service. And it can't fail because the fans will love it regardless. I mean, it's Star Trek, and Bryan Fuller is very good writer and producer. Chances are Nick Meyer may direct the whole season, I can only guess it'll be about 12 to 13 episodes. I think he could do that. I'm also hoping this new series will break from continuity as well, since the last stuff for the last 20 years were awful. Going a clean slate would be a better avenue but I can hardly wait to see the new cast, designs, and the premise for this cash cow. Also, I would like to see if what other programming CBS will be presenting as well.

While not perfect, the Trek that Meyer worked on decades ago was by far more exciting and interesting than any of the Trek that appeared between then and 2009.

God do I disagree here. I think every series has produced stronger episodes then any of the film entries, but in fairness I think Trek truly works better as a TV show that can take time to develop characters and plot.

I would probably put close to 40 to 50 episodes higher then any film. Though I will state that Khan is easily my favorite Trek film, I am much harsher critic of Voyage Home and Undiscovered Country.

Here is the thing though: Fans always wanted to see Spock emotional. Because that is so rare. That's part of his appeal. Meyer understood that. And he put juuuust the right amount of emotion on display. His death scene showed pure dignity. And his deep friendship with Kirk was perfectly, subtly shown. Him getting "angry" over such a big betrayal (of Valeris) was exactly fine.

JJ abrams put nuSpock in full emotional rampage. Twice. He knows what fans wanted to see, and delivered. But Meyer showed the better understanding and judgement of the characters' actions, and thereby kept him more interesting.

And that's what I want to see in the new show: Interesting characters. Envisioned by people, who know how to handle interesting characters. Now let it be NEW characters (as was already promised), and I'm happy 'till no end!

That's what worries me. Fuck Trekkers. I want the new show to appeal to everyone. I want people who hate sci-fi and Trek to be talking and tweeting about it the next day at work because it was so brilliantly entertaining. I want an announcement that writers from Breaking Bad, The Wire and The West Wing will be working on it.

Wishful thinking.

I'm right there with you but Hollywood has always love being 2nd, never 1st. Disney made a killing at the box office by bringing everything fans wanted and even plagiarized A New Hope for them. CBS wants to garner similar success with it's service. The Die Hards will make it a success, and they'll bend over backwards for them.

Well, you can't get more fan service than in the last two movies, right?

Meyer (and to a degree Fuller) have both shown their capability of saying "fuck this shit", flip the table, and create something new from scratch.

I'm much more pleased with this news than the "this time we're REALLY going to show fans what they want to see" in 'Beyond'....

First film traded on the Trek name but was a fresh take and a fresh story. Into Darkness was just a big fan wank circus.

Here's hoping.

Sorry but We don't really know of any real depth of the bond between Valaris and Spock, so that seen didn't really have a emotional reaction, and his line about being dead before seem grossly out of place in relation to what Spock had just done. Now you put Saavik in that situation and we have had a relationship that I can believe would anger Spock so (still doesn't change the already been dead comment though).

In Trek 2009 the loss of Spock's world makes absolute sense in regards to the motivation of the bad guy. And Kirk using Spock's loss of control to take command also makes perfect sense. Now the whole Spock shipping Kirk of the ship, finding old Spock and new Scotty, as well as the terrible idea of interstellar beaming is what is dumb in relationship to the plot of that film.

Yes, people who want more TNG do seem happy.

Hence my concern.
I wasn't thinking of TNG but it's not something to be concerned over if they capture the same success and audience of fans and non-fans as TNG did.
