NHL Uniforms

I'm not a big fan of hockey, but one thing I've noticed in recent years is that the NHL teams seem to be wearing their colored uniforms for their home games. Previously, they used to wear the predominantly white uniforms at home and the colored unis on the road. I'm wondering when the change to colored at home took effect. Did the league itself enforce it or was just a team by team vote?

And to those of you who do follow hockey, do you prefer the teams wearing the colored uniforms at home or the whites?

I think it was around 2002 or 2003? I can't remember for sure...

I'm also pretty sure it was a league-wide thing, wouldn't make sense to have a situation with a team wearing white homes plays a team wearing white aways. I personally prefer coloured jerseys for home games, but it's not exactly an issue near the top of my list of things the NHL needs to fix. ;)

Well its not like teams havent had coloured jerseys before. For example, the old 1967 to late 1980s jerseys the kings used to wear. *points to avatar*

And as Canadave said, its not exactly an "issue". I see it more as something to take away from the already white ice.

Well, yes, but there was a switch between where teams wore coloured jerseys and where they wore whites. I've really no idea why it was done... I'd be curious to find out, though.

Yeah, definately something to google at one point. I would say I enjoyed those jerseys but i was born in 1989 and missed them

I feel kind of bad for the players haha.

Actually i think my next investment is going to be an old Dave Taylor jersey. That way I have one from every era. Mahaha

Since I don't know my LA Kings history too well, how many uniform changes would he have gone through?

I think it had to do with third (alternate) jerseys. Most alternate jerseys were colored jerseys, and were worn at home, meaning the visiting team would have to bring two sets of uniforms on long road trips, as the home team obviously got to choose which uniform to wear. The switch pretty much allowed the visiting teams to only have to bring one set of uniforms.

However, with the new RBK jerseys, which hasn't as of yet brought alternate uniforms, kind of makes that point moot.

A study was done some time in the 70s that asserted the team in the darker sweaters got penalized more. So, home teams started wearing the white. I much prefer colors at home. My Caps change uniforms too much and I wish my Redskins would wear burgundy shirts with gold pants as they used to....

Three major ones. The old purple ones as in my avatar, the black and white gretzky ones, then the current ones. However the ones they have now where at one point a third jersey. It used to be the sheild thing that was the focal point and then the crown for the 3rd.

The NHL switched (league wide) to the "color" uniforms for home teams in the 2003-2004 season.

Both the Coyotes and the DBacks have less 'Arizona-like' looking uniforms. Sad. I liked the black, purple with a touch of turquoise - and the native-looking edging that was on both teams' uniforms.

Yep, I liked them too. But, the new look for both teams has grown on me a bit. I just lament that the D-Backs are yet ANOTHER MLB team that wears a shade of red. :(

Remember when Gretzky was tearing it up in Edmonton in the early days? I do. They played a tough game. A game without sissy uniforms. They drank beer, punched each other's teeth out and didn't wear helmets.
*bangs chest repeatedly*

It seems like decades ago.

shhh...don't talk too loud. I don't want to wake up anybody in this forum. They're all sleeping...
