NFL Talk - 2010-11 Season

I don't feel like the Jets backup up Ryan's shit-talking last year. Their making the playoffs was worse than Seattle. Say what you will but at least Seattle's opponents were trying to win. Yeah, they won a couple of games in the playoffs, and that's great and all, but they weren't legitimately good enough to even make the playoffs.

Once again, they didn't really back up the shit-talk in the regular season this year. For all the talk they didn't even finish close to the Pats. Yeah, they rattled off a couple of good wins in the playoffs again. I would argue that they didn't really outplay the Colts, though they did outplay the Patriots, and frankly, that's probably the only win of theirs that has truly impressed me.

Out of the four teams remaining I think the Jets are the worst, but it's a pretty open field.

The man's reached two AFC championships in his first two seasons. When exactly was he not backing it up?

The way Ryan has been posturing and spouting last year and this, he has to prove the Jets are worth it to validate his comments about the team. Last season, through "Hard Knocks", this season... it's been all about being a Super Bowl team, having the best this and the best that. They need to make it to the Super Bowl to be considered having backed up their trash talk, and they haven't done that.

Yet.

I see Brett Favre is retiring...AGAIN. When is this jackass going to make up his mind?

He already announced during the season that he was done, and implied that coming back this season wasn't a great decision. It wasn't exactly mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa, but it was certainly him having some humility and admitting that he can't perform at 42 like he could at 22. I'm one of the biggest critics of Favre around here, but this is hardly a dick move. By filing his retirement papers, he's freeing up a significant amount of flexibility for the Vikings in the event that a new CBA containing a salary cap is reached in the somewhat near future.

By all means, though, roll your eyes. Are you now a Jets and Giants fan out of nowhere, too?

The Patriot have lost. All is right with the world. :p (Also that's twice at home in a row...) Now if the Jets can just knock off the Steelers... and they'll have definitely earned their Superbowl placement.

Either way, NFC! NFC! :D

Re: The Pats name; my high school mascot was the Patriots (the school opened in 1976), so you'd think I'd like New England. But no; the name's not part of it - actually I appreciate the name since it's Boston. And I have to respect their organization and what Bellichek has done (Spygate aside), but... they're the devil!

Guess it's a matter of opinion, and how much latitude you wish to grant. [Since I'm a Jets fan, and will root for them against any team except my Cardinals, that's a lot of attitude latitude.] If a team plays in the Final Four two years in a row (no matter what you think of the manner in which they reached the playoffs), in my book that justifies talking a significant amount of smack. Now, granted, technically they've fallen short unless they win two more games, but ... they're in it, while the Colts, Patriots, Falcons, Saints and Ravens are all home. Guaranteeing a win against a 14-2 team that crushed your guys only a month before, and then following through, is cause for serious props.

As a Vikings fan this is a worst case scenario. One of our hated rivals is going to make it into the Super Bowl. Unless of course a meteor hits the stadium during the game and wipes out both teams.

One other thing is the "Spygate" controversy from a few seasons ago. This was when the Patriots were discovered to be illegally taping other teams' practices. Of course... that's something that most teams probably do anyhow.

Spygate probably would've blown over if Goodell's immediate response wasn't to destroy the tapes.

Don't get me wrong. The Jets deserve SERIOUS props for that win yesterday. Not just in the winning but in the way it was done. They had a great coaching plan and hte team executed it superbly. I was rather concerned at first with the way Sanchez started out, but he settled nicely. That does earn them a certain amount of rights to talk that smack, because they are backing it up. Generally, I don't mind smack too much if you can in deed back it up. That's why I am still in awe of Larry Bird and Michael Jordan, for example.

I'm simply looking at this from the past two years, and to me the Jets need to make it to the Super Bowl for the account to be settled. And frankly.... the way the Jets won shows me Pittsburgh needs to be seriously concerned. The fact that it's on the road means diddly. And the Steeler OL is in seriously sad shape. Next weekend will be two excellent games between four teams that are all playing very, very well... but the Steelers may be at the bottom of those four.

According to ESPN.com, he filed retirement papers in 2008 and 2009 too. I don't blame anyone for being doubtful about his latest retirement announcement until he's sitting on the couch at home or in a TV studio somewhere and not on the field for any team come training camp in August.

I'm frankly impressed East Tennessee guy is excited about something other than butter or NASCAR. But hey, good for him.

As for the rest of you NFL folks here, other than MLB who doesn't really count. I'm gonna spread my Pats lovin' cheeks today (I'm used to this after being at the game yesterday), as a reasonable enough poster around here, I just ask you all to make it short, sweet, and preferably lubricated. Rip the team and their fans today as much as you want, but Wednesday is my birthday, and I'd like to be able to sit down comfortably by then.

Thanks in advance.

I'm gonna go see if the electric pencil sharpener here at work is plugged in right now using my penis right now.

As a Packer fan living far too close to the MSP area, I couldn't ask for a better scenario. And if a meteor ever is going to strike any stadium, I'd put odds on it hitting the Metrodome.

Not sure who to root for in the AFC. I guess the Steelers- they're the slightly less objectionable of the two.

I'm still sore from the 2002 Super Bowl, so....

I don't hate the Patriots' fans. Just the Patriots.

How was it to watch on TV as far as the Jets contingent went? They were loud, especially as the game went on. It had to be 1/3 Jets fans.

It was very noticeable. And a bit surprising, but I guess I forget that Boston is not that far from NY.

Now you know a little how I felt last week, the big difference being your team is actually good and probably 9 times out of 10, win that game. Pats just had a bad game, that's all there is to it.

Don't sell the Chefs ... I mean the Chiefs, short. They only real offense was that they are very young. They have an excellent running game and what appears to be a very good defense. A little more seasoning and perhaps a good addition of veteran leadership, and I be they will be back in the thick of it soon

No, I think they played over their heads this year and were greatly aided by a very weak schedule. They have a good running game, but they really only have one WR (Bowe) and he's hit and miss. As for Cassel, well to paraphrase Denny Green, "He is who I thought he was!" For all the progress he made this season, he totally regressed in the last two games. I think he would make an okay backup, but the Chiefs are not going to be a serious contender until they upgrade that position with a franchise QB.
