Re: NFL 2015-2016 Season - Maybe extra points actually ... matter? Wha
If he isn't #1, he's gotta be a 1a or 1b at worst. 2008, without Brady, was a pretty good showing at 11-5 as well. Can argue that he mostly returned the 2007 team, which was one of the best ever, but still to go 11-5 without your QB isn't too shabby. And Cassell was pretty close to being cut at the end of the pre-season.
I'll fawn over him for a moment, but yeah: when was the last time you saw the Pats cost themselves by doing something undisciplined? Or get caught unaware by a formation or play call? Burn stupid timeouts because they weren't ready for something? Those are those 'little' things that all add up to the Pats team you see. They don't shoot themselves in the foot, rarely panic, and just seem business-like and in control of (or understanding) the situation most of the time. As a fan, and watching other teams, it's really just a joy to see how this team plays compared to most of the competition and their coaches. They practice (and retain) the minutia, are ready for it when it shows up. trick plays, clock management, they just seem well prepared and calm in the moments that matter. Whereas if you look over at Rex, or Carrol in the superbowl, things don't seem too under control, and there's panic and bad choices in big moments.
As for the patchwork, yeah. that's going to be the biggest frustration if they don't go all the way this year. Pats were clearly one of the (if not THE) best teams in the league this year, and not a lot of other teams stepping up. Carolina, Arizona, Bengals, who else? The injuries are really stacking up, but if they can hold it together and get Edelman back, should have a good shot at a repeat. Feels kinda like 2006, where it was the Pats and Colts, and then everyone else. If the Pats convert that 4th and 2 at the end, they get to play the Bears, led by Rex Grossman. Anyone think that ends with a ring for Rex? Pats just gotta figure out how to hold things together for a bit. Or give up on the perfect season thing, just focus on getting healthy, and go into the playoffs ready to go. They're already 1 game from clinching a berth, and I think there was already a situation where they can clinch a bye by the weekend if things fall right. Just gotta get the O-Line healthy, wait for Edelman, and figure out at least one more WR option if Amendola is going to be out for any period of time. Maybe Scott Chandler could get with the program? Feels like the Superbowl is there for the taking if they can show up with enough healthy bodies to qualify for the game...
Rex Ryan is just BAD. He took a decent Bills team and has tanked it almost immediately. They now play like him, stupid and undisciplined, usually shooting themselves in the foot. And the amount of hot air coming out of that guy doesn't compare well to his lifetime of actual achievements, he's gotta learn to STFU on occasion and focus on winning Sunday instead of in the media on Wednesday. It's kinda too bad, because if he'd stayed (or gone back to) being a DC, he'd probably be one of the best of all time. He just needs to let someone else handle the offense, special teams, and media relations. Just handle stirring up 11 guys to try and knock down the guy with the ball. He's a great defensive mind, gives Brady fits, and has good schemes. Just can't handle the rest of it.
