"Next Voyage" Font

I went to whatthefont.com and could not find a match for this font. Good job on that Alor Italic find.

It didn't say "next voyage" until season three.

The trailers during seasons one and two originally said "next week."

And it was over a moving scene from the episode itself, not a shot of the Enterprise. If you watch the previews, some of them have telltale sound effects along with Kirk's "log" of people running or a red alert, but all we see is the second season Enterprise shot.

My guess is the previews were changed for syndication because the episodes were stripped for daily viewing, and keeping "next week" would possibly confuse the audience. The "next week" clips were then discarded or taken by Roddenberry to be sold through his Lincoln Enterprises business.

Interesting question! The font used seems to be Alor Italic, or at least one was the inspiration for the other. They are not an exact match, but they are too similar for it to be a coincidence. Unfortunately I can't find anything about the history of the Alor font, but I guess it's either an old commercial font or it's based on one.

(Note: I had to edit the font a little bit to make it fit. I made it somewhat wider and tilted it a bit.)

Except for the little "hat" on the capitol A, you've got it.

I'll bet the hat on the A is there by mistake. The guy making the font screwed up, and re-doing the A with primitive technology was too much trouble, so he said "F--- it. I'll say it was on purpose."

I think you have that just backwards. The typeface used in the TOS trailer is probably the original. With the advent of "desktop publishing," lots of established fonts were hijacked, modified slightly so that they are "different" fonts, and then sold under new names. The exaggerated serifs on the "A" are not the only variation. All of the letters show some modification—some more than others. The "Alor" typeface seems to be one of those knock-offs.

Take it from an old font hound from many decades ago. The font is a variation of Ad Lib, a font designed by Freeman Craw back in 1961.

Yep, AdLib except for the (seemingly custom) capital A. The giveaway that it's AdLib as opposed to Alor is the Capital E and small e. Alor's e's would have to be flipped etc.

Also, for the pedantic among us, the difference between Typeface and Font is easy to remember-

Typeface is the main look. For example- "Eurostyle"

Font is the subset- Eurostyle Bold, 8,10,12, etc.

This has become muddled since the early 80's with OpenType and True Type each scaling and bending the base "typeface(s)" into their formerly subordinate "font(s)".
