next moon lander to be named Altair; concept art

Cool name, looks interesting in the pictures, wonder what the big yellow bubbles are

I'm guessing they're the fuel and oxidizer tanks. The thing I noticed is that there doesn't seem to be a separate ascent stage -- could this vehicle be reusable?

And note that the logos for this and other current NASA projects have been designed by TrekBBS's own Mike Okuda!

Altair? somebody was watching forbidden planet...

BTW, that is one ugly ship.
couldn't they make it look more like the eagle from Space:1999?

No, somebody was looking at a star map. Altair is Alpha Aquilae, brightest star in the constellation of the Eagle. Get it? The Eagle has landed?

They were trying to be clever in naming, instead of making more effort to design an esthetic looking, not merely functional vehicle?

It's a joke, for goodness sakes... don't be so geekishly nitpicky - I don't need an astronomy lesson from the peanut gallery.

The logo has been posted on StarTrek.Com , interesting logo and as a major Stargate fan I find it interesting that the A is very reminicint to the Earth symbol

I wouldn't give you two cents for that being the final vehicle. It is totally different than previous published pictures. I'm reading a book right now on the building of the Apollo LM and that design got worked and reworked for three years before it was locked down.

I don't believe a prime contractor has even been picked for this vehicle. Nothing is settled.

Quite true, Drunken. It will look almost nothing like these early designs. I remember when I was a kid, I would get a kick out of looking at outdated encyclopedias and see the artists' conceptions used in entries about landing on the moon. They were funny.

I do like the Orion and Altair names for the command ship and lunar landing module, respectively, both under the appropriate umbrella name of Constellation.
