News? Stories from Dubious Sources

"Conversations"
hujd8qh.jpeg

Trek Culture is reporting that Kate Mulgrew told the Star Trek Cruise audience that conversations are being had around a live-action return for Janeway.

I don’t think this is really significant as she has said similar in the past, but it’s something to note in light of the Shatner comments.

I was on the cruise, and was there when she made the comment. I’m not even much of a fan of hers, but it was amazing to hear her talk. She is a wonderful person and very loving to her fans. But let me put her comment in the context in which it was made: Mulgrew was just pandering to the audience (in a good way, but pandering nonetheless), who were shouting about how a strong female character like Janeway is needed now more than ever, because of real-world events. Her (almost) exact quote was ‘if you all feel that Janeway needs to come back, I would seriously consider it.’ Of course, this is not remotely close to ‘conversations are being had about a live-action return for Janeway.’ Trek Culture, whoever they are, are just wishfully thinking.

can't bait clicks out of "x actor likes their character and would like to play them again if enough fans want it"

The person who relayed the news directly to TrekCulture was also on the cruise. One of the co-hosts of the channel.

Was there more than one Q&A?

And possibly biased and only hearing what they want to hear for their news outlet. I don’t have that problem.

There were two shows, one for people with red Seapass cards and one for blue. But the shows were the same (other than people asking different questions.) I’m assuming that what Trek Culture reported was the same show I attended. Either way, Mulgrew did not outright state that she was in talks about coming back as live-action Janeway. That was what that person implied from her remarks.

I wouldn't consider TrekCulture a clickbait site or channel, at least not to an unreasonable degree. If you consider listicles and whatnot "clickbait", I guess, but their reporting is pretty even-handed. For example, when Robert Kazinsky was being taken out of context from his SFX interview they made some effort to let him set the record straight. So I don't tend to think of them as exaggerating things.

The way Ellie summarizes what she was told in the video is Mulgrew said "conversations were happening and she would be pursuing those conversations," which is pretty specific.

Maybe this is a game of telephone where the person on the cruise isn't reporting things correctly, but that's a little surprising. I trust what @Dukhat is saying too, so for me at this point it's a minor mystery what actually happened. Interesting that no one else is really picking it up as a story, so maybe something was misreported and they jumped the gun. Well worth watching the first three minutes of the video to get a sense of it in any case.

If something IS happening, Mulgrew might not be permitted to go into specifics.

I do personally. Low effort 10 x's about y does fall under clickbait to me, certainly of a different calibre of course than those websites that will do a whole giant article about an upcoming product's release date only to conclude with release date is unannounced or entire articles about a random reddit fan theory or a drawing that someone posted. Those are much worse.

Since "clickbait" can be pretty broad, I'll clarify that I don't consider them a site that makes stuff up, exaggerates things intentionally, or acts as an unreliable source in order to get clicks or views. (As is the case with sites like Giant Freaking Robot, Cosmic Book News, or We Got This Covered; i.e., the types of sites usually posted in this thread.)

Whether their articles and headlines are low-effort enough to be considered clickbait is more subjective, I suppose.

And whether this particular video ends up being a blemish on my viewpoint of them in the long-term remains to be seen, I guess.

EDIT: Since we're talking about clickbait, a special shout-out to Screen Rant, which is genuinely informative once in a while, but more often than not is talking about how Star Trek "canon" just changed because of one of the new issues of the IDW comics. 🤦‍♂️

That makes sense. The examples you cited are in a league all of their own. No it would be unfair and entirely inaccurate to lump them in with that shady lot.

There were ‘words to that effect,’ by which I mean that in the context of actually being there to hear the words, it was more like Mulgrew being nice and pandering to the audience about things she really has no control over, but wanting to end her talk on a high note and making her fans happy. But no, there are no conversations happening.

Sean talks about what Kate said again in this recap video on the cruise, and he is insisting she said there’s conversations happening

He can’t remember which panel he went to but he thinks it was the later one

He can insist all he wants. I know what I heard. And I don’t have a website that needs clicks.

Star Trek fans have such a tendency to take things out of context, or only hear what they want to hear.
