News: Qunito is cast as Spock

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- E! Online is reporting what has been rumored since a Post-Gazette interview last year with Pittsburgh native Zachary Quinto: He's been cast as Spock in the new "Star Trek" movie. (He also discussed the possibility in a May podcast.)

Quinto plays the villain Sylar on NBC's "Heroes," and last week NBC Universal Television Studios president Katherine Pope told the Post-Gazette that if Quinto got the "Star Trek" job, the studio would find a way to work out schedules so he can do both. It would be a benefit to both "Heroes" and "Star Trek," so that makes sense. Quinto's been listed as the rumored actor for the Spock part on his IMDB page for some time.

Quinto's casting also makes sense in a "six degrees of separation" way. Quinto stars in "Heroes" with Greg Grunberg, who starred on "Alias," which was created by J.J. Abrams, who is producing and directing the new "Star Trek" film.

He's a Pittsburgh native!

^^^ I thought that was the whole point of this thread is that he was, in fact, confirmed to play Spock.

Unless there is something new. The link in the OP refers to the E:online article that he's been virtually cast.

But not yet.

the gazette is reporting it because they first brought it up last decmeber in an interview with him where he mentioned he looked like nimoy....and it is a local story.

They are not confirming the E story, just repeating it.

This is how things work on the net...one story spawns multiple other stories. But unless the other stories say something like 'our sources confirm' or 'we have confirmed with Paramount' they are just repeating what E is stating

That being said I do believe this is true as I first heard about this a couple months back from one of my sources...that quinto was beyone interested but actually in talks....and I subsequently confirmed that. I cannot confirm E's story, but it fits with other stories. CHUD also reported he was in talks.

of course it could all be an elaborate smoke screen

The paper went back on its report, now saying he "could be." Maybe there's something new in these comments. I dunno.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Pittsburgh native Zachary Quinto couldn't come out and say that he has been cast as Spock in the new "Star Trek" movie. He had discussed the possibility during a Post-Gazette podcast in May but had to hedge his bets yesterday, when E! Online reported that he had been signed to the role.

"Everybody else seems to have more to say about it than I do," Quinto said from the set of NBC's "Heroes," the Emmy-nominated series for which he plays the villain Sylar.

"I would love for it to be true. We'll see what happens. We can only talk about 'Heroes' today. I'm under a strict directive from NBC. When I have something to say about 'Star Trek,' I will."

Universal Television Studios president Katherine Pope told the Post-Gazette last week that if Quinto got the "Star Trek" job, the studio would find a way to work out schedules so he can do both. In fact, "we're in negotiations about that now," "Heroes" creator Tim Kring said yesterday.

"We're obviously very excited about Zach's prospects there. It's only good for us."

Quinto's casting makes sense in a "six degrees of separation" way. Quinto stars in "Heroes" with Greg Grunberg, who starred on "Alias," which was created by J.J. Abrams, who is producing and directing the new "Star Trek" film.

Not sure what to make of this : Ausiello-Report Tv Guide

Zachary Quinto was neither confirming nor denying reports that he's in line to play a young Spock in Damon Lindelof and J.J. Abrams' Star Trek pic. "I'm under strict orders not to say anything," he said. Luckily, my BFF Greg Grunberg was under no such gag order. "How exciting is that?" he enthused. "Now I've got to beg, plead and scrape to get in that movie! I mean, what's wrong with me as Scotty? Down in the engine room, rotisserie chicken.... "
Strict orders not to say anything. ;) ;) ;) :)

*crosses fingers* Man, I hope Quinto is Spock!

Stop crossing your fingers. There is no need to. Quinto has the role in his pocket.

I wonder what actual surprises will be revealed at Comic-Con tomorrow. It certainly can't be Quinto and Nimoy. They aren't surprises anymore.

Is there any reason to believe anyone but Kirk and Spock will be in Trek XI? Despite all the fan-chatter about McCoy, Scotty, etc., I can't recall any official word on other characters...

Grunberg should be cast as Harcourt Fenton Mudd. :D But I hear he's lost weight so he'll need padding.
