News, if you love the TOS Enterprise....

I hope they provide pieces to build all three versions of the ship just as they did with the PL 1/1000 TOS E. That would rock! But even if not I've been waiting for this for so very long.

I'd been seriously considering stepping up to pay the bucks for a MR TOS E, but this is so much better.

I know the TMP refit E seems to be the ship most drool over, but the TOS E remains my overall favourite and the one I've always wanted most.

I recall being this excited for a model only twice before in my life. The first was when I got my first AMT E kit when I was 11 in 1970. The second was when they released the PL 1/1000 kit a few years ago.

Warped - click on the graphic in that link. All the way to the right, there's listings for "1st Pilot", "2nd Pilot" and "Production". Besides, they know they'd catch shit from people if they didn't do all the alternate parts.

I'm already imagining getting a couple of them, one to build as a straight production version, the second to kitbash with the refit into either a Phase II version or a really big version of my poor, bedraggled Eldridge.

Must get a job....

Sweeeet! :techman:

Right off I'll buy two: one for the Kirk era production version and one for the Pike era version. I'm less enamored with the WNMHGB version.

So this 1/350 scale model is just now in the prototype stage, right? When does it expect to be available?

Somewhere late '10 or early '11. They'll throw out more exact dates as work progresses.

'Twenty-six pages just on the nacelles.'

Assuming it has pictures and diagrams and what-not that seems about right.

And really, a lot of material is available out there in the vast interwebs. A little effort will get you 26 pages of 'ample nacelles' pretty fast.

Yeah, but this is coming from one of the few guys who has directly examined the old girl personally.

As good as Thomas Sasser's work was on the 1/1000 TOS E and the 1/350 refit, this is pretty much primary source information this baby is being based on. It can't help but be that much more accurate.

From the Hobbytalk forums:

The intention is to provide parts & decals for all 3 versions. We haven't yet discussed how to do this, but I assume you can do this with one set of main body parts, plus some combination of decals and/or window plugs and/or partially cutout windows on the inside of the main hull parts.

YES! :techman:

This just keeps gettin' better. Now all we'll need down the road is a 1/350 Klingon D7 and a 1/24 shuttlecraft Galileo.

That said I would like to add that there are certain differences between versions that were not addressed in the PL 1/1000 kit, such as the running lights on the lower edge of the saucer. On the production version the lights are even (in side elevation) with the upper running lights. On the WNMHGB version, and presumably "The Cage" version as well, the lower running lights are set a bit further aft.

I have to ask this. I'm not a modeller, but I'd love to have a TOS Enterprise this size. How difficult is this going to be to assemble? I assume it won't be 'snap-fit', but it is possible for someone being patient that has little previous experience to put this thing together and make it look good? Based on other PL kits will this model be pre-painted, etc? How much 'detail' will the assembler need to add? And how much is this going to cost? Anyone got a guess? Where will be the best place to preorder? On a related topic, anyone here make any corrections/additions to their Hot Wheels 1/18 scale diecast Batmobile out earlier this year? I'm not that skilled and don't have the time or equipment to make all those custom pieces for correcting the antlers, dashboard, steering wheel, etc.

I'm guessing it will run $70ish dollars. It will take skill to assemble, but should be a good deal easier than its Refit counterpart. It will not be pre-painted, but do to the design it shouldn't be a big deal.

The Enterprise is relatively simple, and that does simplify the modeling process. More experienced modelers will paint on complex weathering and install lighting. But for a beginner, a simple coat of gray will cover 90% of the painting and still look good.

If you really want to do it justice, I'd say take the next year (or two) until release and build a few small models to get some experience in. The 1/1000 E will actually give you a decent idea of what you'll be dealing with.

And just to gain appreciation for the accuracy of the upcoming kit, as well as gan some much needed modeling experiance aong the way, get ahold of the 18" Enterprise that was recently re-released. Don't bother trying to accurize it, just build it out of the box but try to make the seams disappear and give it a nice smooth paint job. doing that and the 1:1000 kit will, I think, be good prep to get you up to speed on a simple build of the 1:350 kit.

have fun!
