News about the TOS 11-Footer

I hope they choose to restore it to original filming condition, portside exterior wiring and all.

I'd rather see the Port side finished like the Starboard side. Yes, that's not how the original model was but the intention was a finished ship. You don't see the unfinished Port Side on screen at any time.

Well, if "conservation" as they've described it is their goal neither of those are options. It's more like stabilizing it structurally and cleaning it.

They should make repairs to strengthen the structure and strip off all paint so it can go natural. Then we all can imagine it in whatever paint job we want. ;)

Bright blue with pink windows like on the cover of TMOST.

Back in the day I painted one of 15 or so AMT Enterprises I did over the years that color scheme.

Somewhere on the web is a picture of the Enterprise painted like the Grand Torino from Starsky and Hutch.

What I want to do, really, is take a look at what we need to do to make sure the model is stable and safe, and then to use the latest science that we have through our conservation lab to figure out what we can learn about the model in terms of its structural integrity and its appearance.

We’ll be doing a lot of research on its appearance as part of this project, and definitely looking at the paint as I know it’s something the fans have been very concerned about. As a fan myself, I’m obviously interested in seeing this object come back to its best possible condition – understanding that it’s still going to look like a fifty-year-old model. I’m not interested in making it all shiny!

I would say, mainly, that we haven’t made any final decisions about any of the structural or aesthetic issues at this point; we’re just now getting into the lab and beginning to get a look at the model.

Our chief conservator is putting together a new report over the next few weeks, so hopefully we can sit down this fall and really figure out what the issues are that we have to deal – and what choices need to be made about how to move forward.

Good news happening during my absence, maybe I should visit the Trek BBS less.

I remember from the other threads that some guys wanted to form a group to have a member from the Star Trek Art Department help the correct restoration.

Shame on me, Doug Drexler should have been on my mind and IMHO he is the ideal choice for this kind of job.

He wrote the Smithsonian article in the old Star Trek Posterbooks and probably took plenty of pictures back then (a previously unreleased one showed up on his site shortly before he had to close it) which would show the original condition of the Enterprise prior to Miarecki's paint job.

I'm certain he won't let us down, so all this is really exciting news. :techman:

Read the interview - there's no commitment whatever to alter or achieve a certain appearance. Their definition of " conservation" doesn't include that.

The saucer overall isn't no much "flat" as that it's lower side has a different shape with a flatter bottom.

That was a nice choice to make the underside of saucer "pointier" in the large model rather than flattening out as in the 3-footer.

IIRC the shape of saucer on the 11 footer was different because the vaccuforming process made it difficult to match the 3 footer.
